to think this is a stealth post or am I a miserable cow?

I'm due to start a new job in June. It's a complete remote position and I'll be training for four weeks at the beginning with other new starters.

I don't know any of the people I'll be training with, but today I saw on LinkedIn that one of the HR people at the company who headhunted me liked a post of one of the new starters at the company.

It went along the lines of "I'm so happy and excited to start my role. During this pandemic, landing this dream role right after getting my university degree hasn't been easy. I'm feeling so blessed and can't wait for this new chapter in my life"

I was rolling my eyes to the back of my head when I read that and just thought how narcissistic and full of self-praise this person is to write this publically on LinkedIn, but am I being unreasonable?

Is this the new normal and I'm just being a miserable, bitter cow that should get with the times?

Yeah you're a miserable cow

WonkyCactus · 19/05/2021 19:26

It's just what young people do I think. I have a cousin in her early 20s and from what I see on social media she and her friends are always posting stuff like this. I agree it's baffling, I also roll my eyes a lot.

shouldistop · 19/05/2021 19:26

Is it any more narcissistic and self-praising than making sure we all know you were headhunted?

That's what I was thinking actually. Op are you annoyed that a 21 year old is in the same job as you? Is that what this is about?

Newkitchen123 · 19/05/2021 19:27

Isn't that the point of LinkedIn though? CV Facebook!

SummerHouse · 19/05/2021 19:27

Do you have a degree op? I just can't see the stealth boast but I wonder if there's something in it that hits a nerve. I am trying to word this not sounding like an arsehole but it's not really worked. Confused

PrincessTuna · 19/05/2021 19:28

They are signalling to their new employer that they are proud to be part of their organisation. I think it takes balls to post it so I wouldnt be overly critical.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 19/05/2021 19:28

It’s pretty normal now. Usually the post is something along the lines of “After x years with [current employer] I’m now pursuing an exciting opportunity with [new company]. I’m so very grateful for the experiences old company gave me and the colleagues [tag a few] I had the immense pleasure of working with. I cannot thank them enough for the growth they gave me that have enabled me to make this exciting new leap. They have been so supportive and I wouldn’t be where I am without them. I’ll be starting my new role on Monday and I’m so excited to be working with such a progressive/innovative/community focussed/ world leading/ forward thinking company. I’ll be working in the team with the wonderful [new manager] and I can’t wait to learn from their experience and develop myself in [field].”

I think it’s cringe but I think it’s one of those you’re meant to be seen to be doing Hmm

Treacletoots · 19/05/2021 19:28

@shouldistop exactly what I was thinking...

Sternschnuppe · 19/05/2021 19:28

Just to clarify, I'm not jealous of this person. I got a job at the same company as well and whilst we will be training together at the beginning, we will be working in different sections of the business afterwards.

I just thought when I read this post that it sounds like "look at me and how much I achieved even in this pandemic, look how great I am"

I get bigging yourself up to get a job, I do the same on my CV and in interviews, I just don't see the point in doing it after you got the job.

OP posts:
Mydogmylife · 19/05/2021 19:30

I see it as a pretty shameless suck-up post rather than stealth

PeteWicksSexyPirate · 19/05/2021 19:30

Because linked-in is a live online CV.

Sternschnuppe · 19/05/2021 19:30

Yes, I have a degree and no, I'm not jealous that a 21 year old is working in the same business that I do.

There's nothing stealth about it at all
Odagled · 19/05/2021 19:31

I wouldn’t do it myself but I’m afraid this is normal. I wouldn’t even describe it as “stealth”, it’s just a boast.

To try to create a good impression on your new employers, obviously.
OldkermitSippingtea · 19/05/2021 19:33

I think you should take a hard look in the mirror, OP.

Sternschnuppe · 19/05/2021 19:33

Aren't a lot of people headhunted nowadays if companies are looking for specific skills? I certainly didn't intend to show off when I mentioned it, I just thought it was normal.

OP posts:
FlattestWhite · 19/05/2021 19:33

I still don't see why you think it's stealthy, even if you do think it is a bit 'look at me' - isn't linked in totally open, at least to people who joined? So anyone could see it or anyone could post something that the bosses would see, even you if you wanted?

GreyhoundG1rl · 19/05/2021 19:33

So arselicky to post on the company's LinkedIn that you're "feeling blessed" at the prospect of working there 😂
I totally agree, op

OldkermitSippingtea · 19/05/2021 19:34

I certainly didn't intend to show off when I mentioned it, I just thought it was normal.

The irony. Maybe afford this person the same reason?

Keep looking in that mirror.

ThatIsMyPotato · 19/05/2021 19:37

It's pretty much all you see on LinkedIn

Lunaballoon · 19/05/2021 19:37

Companies love positive messages being shared on LinkedIn as it’s an effective marketing tool. Sounds like she’s made a great start in her new career and will get noticed.

RightOnTheEdge · 19/05/2021 19:38

Yeah, you're a misery guts.

SnappyMcSnapface · 19/05/2021 19:38

Yeah that’s just what LinkedIn is like, unfortunately!

Well, maybe your narcissistic and self praising 21-year-old colleague also thought it was normal. Maybe it is these days. Surely you can afford them the same kind judgement you give yourself? Maybe we could even believe that you started this thread because you genuinely wondered if it was your perspective that was off and you simply wanted the chance of illumination and self improvement?
