Continuing the previous thread - people's sexuality varies hugely and what some people think is disgusting is good fun for others. It's impossible to generalise and say XYZ practice is wrong or repugnant and I agree with the posts at the end of the other thread that porn often just reflects what people do. Obviously you pick where your own interests lie and are glad human beings are diverse.

I was pleased to see that in her posts Elizabetth was very capable of 'holding her own' without resorting to nastiness .

Some people agreed with her point of view and some didn't, but a few attempted to denigrate her for her strong beliefs, using her refusal to be drawn into viewing the very things she finds unacceptable to justify their argument that she wasn't sufficiently informed to venture an opinion.

I don't need to view videos of child abuse, happy slapping, cock fighting, dog fighting etc to know that I find those practises unacceptable, so why should anyone suggest that someone needs to view anything to find the idea behind it unacceptable before they can register their disapproval?

For those who are comfortable with pornography, fine, but please don't suggest that people who aren't comfortable with it should view it in it's entirety to satisfy your own needs for justification.

Thank you very much for your support, NNT. Given our recent history on other parts of the board, I've got to say I really appreciate it. It's very generous of you to extend me that.

I thought Zebbedee was on dodgy ground when he started claiming to have been a male escort and talking about explicit details of sex but what's being described on that other thread is just . Hope you are OK, dividedself.

Good spot, BTW, onebatmother!

Elizabetth, I'm sure we'll cross swords again somewhere, but at least we are reassured it is done with honesty and conviction.

policywonk, I had not forgotten about your post!

I found this page on the bbc website which carries comments against the law
and which led me to this site that has a pretty
comprehensive overview of who is against the legislation and why.

In addition, there is some information on its progress in Parliament.

According to them the government has widened the applicability of the law considerably.

Have not had the time to read the actual government papers, though.
Given your handle I hope I can leave that to you

article about Neil Malamuth

I have no idea whether it is peer-reviewed.

Do you believe that watching violent imagery in video games/films makes those predisposed to violence more likely to act out their impulses? Because it seems to me that that is a pretty widely-accepted premise.

Judy1234 · 29/12/2007 19:17

He uses a lot of "may"s in that though so I don't think it proves anything. He seems to be saying 25% of men who might be a bit more sensitive and violent than others might be influenced if they view violent material. I cannot see any proof of that and certainly nothing that would make me think we ought to censor material and James Bond films or whatever violence or sex people like to watch in a free society.

Havent read all the thread but think pornography can influence a persons behaviour, i.e. men that watch it could possibly act out what they have seen.

Remember that young girl backpacking in Thailand (sorry cant remember her name, she was 21), she was speding New Years with her friends and was raped and murdered by 2 Thai men who had been watching porn all night. Poor girl.
