I've only ever had one and it wasn't long after I'd given birth so I think I was beyond caring.

Do you trim? Take paracetamol? Wear a dress?

I'm overthinking this I know...but, pls amuse me.

Just make sure I’ve had a shower but that’s it. It’s over in a flash anyway! I think it took me longer to take my jeans off last time

Lullabymummy17 · 17/05/2021 13:32

@Hopeisnotastrategy

Practice your best fanny smile.
😂😂😂😂
Sidge · 17/05/2021 13:33

I do about 500 smears a year.

I'd like it if you -

-Avoid sex for 24 hours before.

-Wash your feet and your vulva (my nose is actually closer to your feet than your fanny...) but don't douche. If you wash inside your vagina it can make it harder to insert the speculum.

That's it really.

SGChome20 · 17/05/2021 13:34

Shower (as others have said) I also wear a pantyliner, first time I had one I wasn’t sure if I would bleed a little (I didn’t and never have) but they use lube and I hate that going on my pants so I wear a liner. Maybe that’s just me though!

Goodvibesfamily · 17/05/2021 13:34

@CounsellorTroi

I don’t do anything really. I’m grateful to MN though for informing me of different sized speculums (specula?) so I could ask for a smaller one.
The shorter speculum is a game changer! First time this time and I didn't feel a thing, I cannot believe they subjected me to the past discomfort.
Poppop4 · 17/05/2021 13:35

I shower as close to the appointment as I can and just make sure not to have sex the day before just Incase

CafeMochaVodkaValiumLate · 17/05/2021 13:36

Haha @Sidge point taken. I will have my shower approx an hour before.

Fanny smize is on point Grin

I had my last smear a few weeks ago and having to wear a mask while lying down was awful - felt like I was suffocating!

MonkeyPuddle · 17/05/2021 13:42

Another smear taker here, I’m not fussed if you have a shower really.
I’m just happy that women attend.
In the pre smear chat please tell us if you’re anxious/scared, I know some nurses are arseholes but I just wanna take the sample in the least traumatic and most positive way I can.

listsandbudgets · 17/05/2021 13:43

Skirt or at the very least joggers easy go get on or off, knickers in decent condition, 2 paracetamol and a good wash Grin

TheQueef · 17/05/2021 13:44

Brace.

Sceptre86 · 17/05/2021 13:46

I make sure to wash down below and will have a trim if it needs it. I always take a pad in my bag as I always bleed a bit afterwards and take some paracetamol.

Claricethecat45 · 17/05/2021 13:48

Can I please please tell you that, as a Practice/FP Nurse I can and often do, conduct upto 6 smears a day; I will always use the smaller speculum with plenty of cytology friendly lube gel for almost all women apart from multigravida's who sometimes have larger vaginal walls which can 'occlude' i.e.; fall in a bit....and they may need a slightly larger model.

I have never ever 'noticed' any one particular feature of a Vulva/Vagina which sets anyone apart and aside from making an observation that there is no obvious problem...discharge/loss, deformity or lesion, I do not even notice the state of someones wax or pubic hair or lack/amount of it....SO many women 'apologise' that they haven't been for their regular wax, or that there razor was blunt! I don't care!!!!

I also see a lot of piercings!! not as clunky as when speculums were exclusively stainless steel! so in general a little less cumbersome than it used to be.

I aim to make the procedure as quick and comfortable as possible and use a little ctyobroom and honestly its all over in one minute....I always offer a modesty cover even if it is only a sheet of paper, and almost all my patients just hold their underwear until we are done.....the only only thing I would say is not to have sex within a few hours of attending as semen definitely makes everything a bit 'cloudy' but if it happens, then we deal with it !

Oh - and well done for attending.....take a panadol an hour before the appointment if you are supersensitive is my only advice but really- it won't make too much difference.....

It is so important to have these smears and I make it my daily mission to never lose sight of anxieties around having it done and I will also ensure that there are NO interruptions or loss of privacy at any stage during the appointment.

Please please do not worry.

Sidge · 17/05/2021 13:50

@MonkeyPuddle oh totally!! When it boils down to it we're just glad you attend. Washing etc is a bonus.

We really don't care if you've trimmed your pubes, shaved them off, dyed them green, have shaved your legs, are wearing your saddest knickers etc. We just want to get the best sample in the best possible way.

Bungalowlady · 17/05/2021 13:56

Anyone else worry they will fart? I have ibs and could clear a room some days Blush

That's such a lovely post
Mellonsprite · 17/05/2021 13:56

Wash plus clean knicks.
Good tip about washing feet @snidge I’d never thought of that!

Mintjulia · 17/05/2021 13:58

Bath, trim, decent undies.

Promise myself coffee and lemon drizzle once it is over Smile

MonkeyPuddle · 17/05/2021 13:58

@Bungalowlady fart away love, makes no odds to me!

skybluee · 17/05/2021 13:59

The last time I went for a smear it tore me and right at the bottom of the entrance there was a tear about a cm long which hurt so much every time I went to the loo. I had no idea this could happen and tbh it has messed with my head. Reading some of the above replies I don't know if I should've bought some kind of cream or used coconut oil (a tiny bit of it) on that region (on the outside). It did heal but it was agony for a while. They also used the metal speculum which I don't like the idea of at all. It was sitting in some kind of water.

starfishmummy · 17/05/2021 14:00

I think they use the shirt as default where I go, as the nurse said she had put it in my notes to use the long one Confused as I have a tilt, and told me ro remind her as well

starfishmummy · 17/05/2021 14:01

*short!!

SoMuchForSummerLove · 17/05/2021 14:03

Cytobroom makes it sound very small and cute somehow Grin

Menoismymate · 17/05/2021 14:04

Leave DS OUTSIDE the room! I wear a longish top for a bit of extra dignity but other than that, and showering of course, not much else.

CafeMochaVodkaValiumLate · 17/05/2021 14:06

Thanks @Claricethecat45 and @Sidge Halo
