To not understand what the 'woke' brigade is?

Really confused about what it is

The woke brigade are interested in winning arguments not changing minds or getting stuff done. This is why it is often the bedfellows of student politics where the debate is all and action is sidelined. Take the Labour party for example. If you write saying why you can't vote for them they tell you why you are wrong. So no one votes for them and they don't get chance to implement any policies but thet repmain intellectually pure. It's definitely not about fighting racism. Woke brigade dispise the 'small minded' entrepreneurship of lots of imigrants. Also not big on family values so important to lots of cultures. Woke brigade love a victim the more obscure the better, but only the right type. Women are not victims in their mind. And they know best. Because...god knows why...but their knowledge trumps dissenters lived experience which is often called phobic. If I speak out about the antisemitism in the Labour party I am islamiohobic. If I speak out about safeguarding I am transphobic. Rinse and repeat.

I’ve never heard anyone use the term ‘woke’ about other people who wasn’t a clear, obvious arsehole.

Piers Morgan uses it a lot.

Quaagars · 15/05/2021 02:16

Seems to be a way of trying to insult people for being ''awake' to injustice, whether that be racism, homophobia or whatever.
When it's really not and just gets a meh Hmm if called it.
Would rather be woke than a bigot.

Woke democracy in action.

"Changing the name of a Christmas festival to a winter festival so people of other faiths aren't offended is often given as an example of political correctness. I'm a little surprised that you are unaware of all of these terms OP."

"Wow! That is ridiculous."

It's also an urban myth.

lakesidelife · 15/05/2021 03:50

I think it is and isn't an urban myth.

My dc's UK schools always had winter festivals or similar for those reasons and I worked in a local authority which very much functioned in that way.

To be clear in neither case was anyone actually asking for this to happen because they were offended and on the other side no one who celebrated Xmas minded the changes.

So there was no agro or animosity by or towards anyone but there was still concern expressed.

So I can see where this idea came from.

Ah - I've rarely seen the term used about anyone who wasn't a clear and obvious arsehole. Or certainly who displayed limited critical thinking skills.
Surfschool · 15/05/2021 07:31

The Daily Mail use it and so do their readers. They also like calling people snowflakes for not getting their racist/sexist jokes.

Woke democracy in action.
I have have seen that before. Democratic socialists of America could you just imagine what a government of them would be like😩
OldTurtleNewShell · 15/05/2021 07:47

I haven't rftf but I think of the woke brigade as a modern version of the puritans. They're people so caught up in fighting the righteous fight that they don't realise they're the ones doing the punching.
And I don't think they are at all 'woke' in the way they claim. Just the opposite.
Take the example of Laurel Hubbard. Anyone arguing that it was fair for a white middle aged male person to take advantage of a rule change so Hubbard could take a gold medal from a 18yo Samoan woman isn't 'intersectional' or 'woke' to racism.
All they're doing is enforcing a religious dogma and justifying it because they're the 'good guys'. Like I said, Puritans.

maddening · 15/05/2021 08:21

Why so wide eyed op?

GoddessKali · 15/05/2021 08:27

@DioneTheDiabolist

The "woke brigade" are people you don't agree with, so you call them "woke brigade" as an insult. Using this insult means that you are totally correct and very clever indeed.
This!

The same people who call others ‘woke’ are the same as the ones using ‘karen’ as an insult to label women.

Helleofabore · 15/05/2021 08:35

GoddessKali

Except I see people who fit the definition of ‘woke’ or label themselves as woke using ‘Karen’, and ‘ok boomer’.

BrumBoo · 15/05/2021 08:39

Funny how the most name-calling I've come across is from those who would be considered 'woke'. I won't name them, but one comedienne on Twitter went full misogynistic insults on Twitter, because us 'TERFs' deserved it. Couldn't wrap her thick little head around her hypocrisy, as she Karen'd this and Bitch/Cunt that.

CounsellorTroi · 15/05/2021 09:00

@CliftonGreenYork

It's the person who complained that a train driver used the phrase ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, when THEY are non binary. It's the nugget at LNER who then begged forgiveness for such inappropriate language.
To be fair it was a bit of an odd phrase to use in that context, why not say “Hello everyone” or “All passengers may I have your attention”. He wasn’t presenting a TV show.
NoMLMbots · 15/05/2021 09:04

Someone said woke means awake.

In my experience I have found people look for things to get annoyed about. some things are really worthy of changing but other things tend to be sought out.

I've found quite often people with much privilege are 'woke' and share their opinions and criticism of everything. Tell people they are racist/transphobic/not saying things right (the correct terms appears to change all the time so easy to catch out the older generation who of course are 'extrememly racist/transphobic/homophobic etc etc as a mass group). No one that has ever come before has been so 'awake' to the concerns of others and equality of course.... Hmm

Oh my god. Is this the future? 😦
Justgorgeous · 15/05/2021 09:46

Woke brigade = Let’s just totally fuck up society.

GoddessKali · 15/05/2021 10:06

Hmm ok so it seems people call themselves woke and label others - I guess people can label themselves whatever they want, and they’ll be twats in every demographic.

Basically anyone who labels others with terms such as woke, karen, sheep, sheeple, conspiracy theorists then they’re all twats as you shouldn’t label people with anything! (unless the person actually self labels themselves as these)

But it’s ok for you to label them twats? Wink
GoddessKali · 15/05/2021 10:17

Yes because they’re throwing random insults out at people - I can call them twats as that makes it ok in my head Grin Grin Grin

Mysterian · 15/05/2021 10:29

"Woke" is just the new "politically correct".

People who like to say racist/homophobic/sexist/etc things use it when they're upset about being called out on being racist/homophobic/sexist/etc.

Some people might do that but most people want to just plod along through life without people with extreme views creating obstacles everywhere.

And this is exactly what bothers people so much about wokeness. If you don’t comply, you’re automatically evil. No room for critical thinking or dissent.

It’s dogmatic and intolerant.
