I think that we all try to be reasonable and non judgemental. However, I do think we can be labelling and bias at times. I was just discussing in private, with dh , my own pet peeve. He was quite taken aback .. he never judges , is mostly fair . Its made me wonder if many of us have quiet little unreasonable ( and are aware of ) thoughts and judgements .. ?! Meant to be light hearted.😂

Loads. Some rational, others less so.

Baseball caps, particularly if worn back to front. Fine for sports like golf or sailing though.
Tattoos.
The T word and the use of dinner/tea for lunch or supper.
Eating in the street or on public transport (biscuit or grapes for children fine, greasy burger sitting next to me not fine).
Orange fake tans, hoop earrings, painted over arced eyebrows.
Leather skirts or trousers. Even Mrs Mays expensive ones.
Anyone wearing anything with a St George’s Flag or with one in the garden (apart from during Six Nations or from church on St George’s day).
People playing music aloud in public.
People wearing heels to walk in countryside.
Torn jeans worn by people over twenty.
Piercings.
Smoking, Most of all, smoking.

ConcernedAuntie · 14/05/2021 08:16

Tattoos - I'm sorry but especially on women. Why would you have something permanently etched into your skin. Tastes change over the years - you wouldn't have your living room decorated the same at 30 as 50.

Niece has a crossbow on her upper arm - something to do with a TV programme she watches I believe. Why? Just why? It's so ugly.

Went to a wedding and one of the bridesmaids had a halfsleeve that looked like a massive bruise. It just spoilt the whole effect. Pretty dresses, hair and makeup and a big black arm!

Everyone's choice to do what they want with their own body I know, but why do something that you are either stuck with for evermore or will be subject to costly and painful removal. Sorry, I just don't get it.

waterlego · 14/05/2021 08:19

People who buy bottled water , not because they are out for the day etc but 2L bottles and in the supermarket.

Oooh yes, I hate this too for the same reasons.

notanothertakeaway · 14/05/2021 08:23

My pet rant is teachers with poor grammar. Children are only as good as the people who teach them

cupoftea2021 · 14/05/2021 08:35

Human beings are naturally judgemental.
For me.. I have a huge issue with childhood obesity.
I think it is cruel and inflicts a childhood with low self esteem.
Obese children were so rare as I grew up now it has become common.

bubblebath62636 · 14/05/2021 08:39

The first thing I jugded on this thread was your terrible punctuation op 😂..

It makes me want to scream!

Weescht · 14/05/2021 08:41

Well I went to bed feeling like absolute shit after reading this thread last night. Thanks!
My house is a mess because I'm busy. Sometimes I forget to open the curtains in a room because I'm busy. Sometimes I eat on the go because I'm busy. Except when it's a Gregg's sausage roll; because they're delicious.
There's always a reason.
There's a child at our school with a name that was mentioned. What if their mum reads this?
And here's what I know: I have plenty of biases. But extending kindness toward strangers is very high on the list of things I seek in a person. I don't care how tidy your house is or that you've never had a sandwich crumb brush your face in the street. If you can't imagine that other people have feelings – enough to not want to slag off their lifestyles on a public thread that they may read – what a shame.

BumCat · 14/05/2021 09:01

I’ve thought of another, people who buy highly overbred dogs with terrible health conditions. They are treating them as fashion accessories and encouraging the continuation of the puppy farming industry. So ignorant it’s embarrassing.

sweetypop · 14/05/2021 09:02
@sweetypop tf? 'Foreigners'? I know we are talking about bias and pet peeves here but that's is out and out racism.

You realise it's possible to be BAME and British? It's also possible for someone to commit a crime as an individual and gasp it not be linked to their ethnicity
I didn't want to state a certain country. Not sure if they're Turkish, Pakistani... I could hazard a guess but that would then be racist so as the article doesn't say yet then yes foreigners, ethnic is the word that encompasses every country other than this one... either way, the word foreigners is not racist ffs!

MintyMabel · 14/05/2021 09:03

Of course you do we make assumptions all the time

It comes down to ones’s definition of judgement.

Of course people make judgments of people and places all the time. Is this place safe to be, is that person someone I like, will that group of men on the corner move politely if I ask them? We make judgements about the kind of person we think others will be and that is inevitably based on appearance and behaviour. That’s what keeps us safe as humans and is hard wired.

That is entirely different from saying “I don’t judge people” meaning “I have no opinion on other people’s choices where it doesn’t affect me.” I will judge that I may not be safe from the scruffy looking guy on the corner with his hoodie pulled up, and take appropriate action. I don’t judge him for being scruffy or wearing a hoodie. There is an important distinction.

OhWhyNot · 14/05/2021 09:12

That’s a different sentence that is not claiming they don’t judge at all it’s claiming they don’t judge other people choices that don’t effect them personally

But I believe everyone will make a judgement at some point on other people’s choices that don’t effect them

They are most likely to also come out with patronising and pretentious lines like I don’t see colour (not meaning they are physically colour blind) which was very popular line on MN years ago

MintyMabel · 14/05/2021 09:13

The word isn’t. Not when applied to actual foreigners. I think the point being made is that these men aren’t necessarily foreigners, just because they aren’t white. They are just as likely to be British and calling them foreigners because they don’t have white skin or “white” names is where the racism accusation is coming from.

EmeraldShamrock · 14/05/2021 09:16

That is spot on.
Its what I wanted to say. Grin
Some people search out differences.

ConfusedAdultFemale · 14/05/2021 09:19

People who buy bottled water , not because they are out for the day etc but 2L bottles and in the supermarket.

But what if you’ve got plants that can’t have tap water?? I know it rains a lot in the U.K. but not always when you need to water your house plants Grin

sweetypop · 14/05/2021 09:26

I do know they're likely to be British so fair point there... however how would one even say what I'm trying to say and be pc? Culture? The most worrying thing is that in the previous case )which we all remember very well) the abusers got away with it for so long partly because the police were afraid to act due to their (fuck me here we go) race, culture, ethnicity etc... and the fear of being deemed as racist.... some of these men still walking the streets in the same area where the victims live. It's honestly a disgrace but then again the whole justice system in the uk is a disgrace so wouldn't expect any different
MintyMabel · 14/05/2021 09:35

But I believe everyone will make a judgement at some point on other people’s choices that don’t effect them

You may believe what you wish. I’ve enough to worry about in my own life without giving headspace to whether someone else should be eating a sausage roll in public. Happily it also means that people who want to judge me for any of my choices, or indeed judge me for saying I don’t judge, don’t have any impact on me either.

They are most likely to also come out with patronising and pretentious lines like I don’t see colour (not meaning they are physically colour blind) which was very popular line on MN years ago

I’d like to see your research on that if you can state it so categorically.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 14/05/2021 09:41

Bailiffs, debt collectors, TV licensing "officers" and all their ilk. What kind of person chooses to harass poor people for a living?

Men who cat call and harass women/girls. Scum - all of them.

More in the spirit of the OP. People who smoke in the street. I smoke myself but, to me, this just looks awful. You really can't wait until you get home?

Oneearringlost · 14/05/2021 09:42

@Tiddleypoms

Double negatives . !
This reminded me of the Just William story where he asked his father if he could have a birthday party. His father said no. Inculcated in him during a rare moment of retention at school, he'd learned that two negatives make a positive. Cue William to test it out. "Father, did you say that I could have a birthday party?" Father: " No, I did not!" Full agency on William's part to go ahead with said birthday party.
Oneearringlost · 14/05/2021 09:43

attention", not "retention", though he obviously retained it

Oneearringlost · 14/05/2021 09:45

Sorry if it's already been said as haven't RTFT yet, but people holidaying in Dubai.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 14/05/2021 09:51

Tattoos.
Logically I know that loads of people have them. Some are great, etc etc.
Somewhere though I feel that women shouldn't have them. As a child literally no woman had them, and as a man probably only if were in the navy!

DumbestBlonde · 14/05/2021 09:52

@marton4710

I hate to hear it when cooks on tv refer to “add a BIT of water”. Should be drop or spot or specific amount. But then I guess I’m just a grumpy old gran 😝
Ha ha - me too, I actually have some measuring "spoons" that are (largest to small): Tad Dash Pinch Smidgen, and Drop I have not compared them to ml/mg though, so they are probably just a bit of fun Smile
Bringminimoons · 14/05/2021 09:54

The greggs sausage roll in public being certain people ( common ) is quite funny because we are classed probable as middle class. Eldest DS is in private school and there is a greggs at the end of the road. We all love a sausage roll in the mornings on the school run.

Oh, I've thought of a couple more!

People who use "revert" when they mean "reply".

Drama llamas - especially at work.
Languages evolve, there is no problem with saying revert instead of reply*

Trying to work out when you could use revert instead of reply and still make sense, the two words have completely different meanings Confused.

To reply is to answer or respond, to revert is to return to a previous state.
