To ask everyone in the UK to watch this NI documentary

You will (hopefully) be aware of the Ballymurphy Massacre, that has been in the news this week, when innocent civilians were killed by British soldiers in 1971. It has taken 50 years for the victims' names to be cleared of any wrongdoing.

There has been a lot of posts on here mentioning NI over the past years due to Brexit, and it has become clear that many people in GB are not aware of the history. This documentary is from 3 years ago and now showing again on Ch4 - it is a long, difficult but important watch

Boris just apologised for how the investigations were handled, not for what happened. eyeroll

Tootsey11 · 19/05/2021 13:17

It is well documented that on the 3 days of the ballymurphy massacre the IRA were part of what happened. Ask any leading journalist in Ni who was involved. They have all been given the information.

tentosix · 19/05/2021 13:22

Two wrongs don't make a right. All the incidents were wrong. All people including government should be held to account

Somatronic · 19/05/2021 15:40

@Tootsey11 that is nonsense.

CoolCatTaco · 19/05/2021 16:40

More Tootsey tripe. If it's well documented then provide the documents.

Tootsey11 · 19/05/2021 20:00

Does any of you pair of pillocks actually live in Ni.

Tootsey11 · 19/05/2021 20:10

And as for me being a bigot, I'm a protestant woman living with a Catholic man. I'm no bigot. You really need to do your research.

If you read properly what I wrote originally I stated:

On the 3 days, the loyalist were shooting, the army were shooting, and the IRA were shooting. This has been clearly stated time and time again by leading journalists on radio and television programmes here in Ni. Information received directly by each section acknowledging that they were Involved. But the IRA refused to cooperate with the enquiry, the loyalists issued witness statements, as did the army and the ordinary people on the street.

CoolCatTaco · 19/05/2021 20:36

I've lived my whole life in NI and am old enough to remember.
I make no apology for pulling you up on your attempts to discredit the Ballymurphy families by shouting IRA at every opportunity. The people who died weren't caught in the crossfire, the British Army murdered them.

Tootsey11 · 19/05/2021 22:03

I didn't say they didn't shoot them. But who was shooting at the soldiers? The fairies?

Ever read anphoblacht?

CoolCatTaco · 19/05/2021 22:26

No, have you?

Somatronic · 19/05/2021 23:28

The soldiers were shooting at each other.

There was no IRA there because it happened on the first three days of internment so the IRA was in hiding.

RuggerHug · 19/05/2021 23:57

@Tootsey11

I didn't say they didn't shoot them. But who was shooting at the soldiers? The fairies?

Ever read anphoblacht?

Not the innocent people who were deliberately shot in the back.

I grew up in the South in the 70's and 80's. It's not only UK history that was lacking in schools. We were taught about the famine, Daniel O'Connell, Padraig Pearce and Michael Collins etc but the curriculum never touched on what was happening north of the border. I would say that we lived a very sheltered life - RTE didn't broadcast any events and as the news wasn't on constantly like it is now, it was easy to be ignorant.
The first I heard of the Troubles that I remember was when I moved to London in the late 80's as did so many young Irish kids just finishing school/college. You learned quickly where you could or couldn't go if you wanted to stay safe.
History education is there to teach people what has gone before to learn from it to avoid repetition. Shame it isn't all encompassing and unbiased, maybe then - if everyone knew the facts - could there be hope for change.

@SunshiningBetty

In what way do you think NI is Lawless?

RuggerHug · 20/05/2021 08:34

@SunshiningBetty

Maybe we’re all just sick of NI being such a lawless pain in the arse. The UK should just cut them loose and let them sort themselves out.
Reap what you sow. Colonial atrocities and the results of them aren't something that can be ignored or forgotten no matter how hard they try.

Slightly inflammatory and a good indicator of the attitude that has contributed to the continuing situation in NI...
queenmeadhbh · 20/05/2021 13:05

Absolute LOL @SunshiningBetty “the UK should just cut NI loose” I’ve got news for you, that is exactly what the republicans want. Which according to the attitude of some on this thread makes you an IRA sympathiser

CoolCatTaco · 20/05/2021 14:04

Well said @queenmeadhbh!!

RuggerHug · 20/05/2021 18:57

Reminds me of that man on question time suggesting his solution for brexit. 'Instead of this Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland, why don't we have the island of Ireland as you know, 1 Ireland'.

A nation once again starts playing

queenmeadhbh · 20/05/2021 21:13

@RuggerHug Grin that’s what makes me laugh so much. We have loyalists screeching about the crown and the union and blah blah blah - meanwhile the country they are so loyal to is full of people going “huh? Northern Ireland? Is that ours? Oh shit these people are BRITISH? For gods sake can they not just join up with the southern fellas and leave us alone?”

SunshiningBetty · 21/05/2021 00:30

[quote Covidworries]@SunshiningBetty

Well the fact that men go around kneecapping teenage boys who go even slightly of the rails for one. And the fact that the police seem incapable of dealing with it. So much so that their parents have to hire an ex IRA bloke to negotiate their ‘pardon’. What sort of backward place is it? They don’t deserve to be part of the UK.

Hear hear! That would be great!

Covidworries · 21/05/2021 06:27

@SunshiningBetty

Im not aware of this, so maybe its not getting any media attention.

I have heard about some areas of England through where there is a high muslim populations about girls being ubducted and raped and nothing being done as police wont do into areas as not safe.
I dont know as im not in either area to know first hand and again no mainstreme media coverage.
But what would be the reaction to people saying the UK should kick muslims out????
Im guessing there would be uproar.
And whilst i am sure there are bad things happening in NI and muslim communities, bad things happen everywhere and by anyone. But just because some women have affairs doesnt mean that a. All women are having affiars and b. No men are having affairs. I dont want to be judged by the behaviour of people of my religion, skin colour, gender, job role, disability, culture etc. Because they dont act for me, neither can it be assumed that soemone with the 'Right colour, religion, gender, job etc is incapable of doing somethingnwrong.

RuggerHug · 21/05/2021 07:49

British taxes would still have to pay for the pensions of everyone there that worked in the civil service/NHS. It's not a cut off and forget option though so I wouldn't get excited if you think it could just happen.
