Was with sister earlier on and she was carrying a bag which she was going to give to the husband of her friend. It was over her shoulder. After a brief chat he came over and silently removed the bag from her shoulder taking it into the house. Sister told him never to invade her space again without asking first. It was incredibly awkward and he also looked very embarrassed. Nothing has happened to her as in abuse so I am a bit perplexed as to the strong reaction. Aibu to say she completely over reacted and made a big deal out of nothing?

I think the issue was that it wasn't unobtrusive at all

Could be. Not clear from OP whether it was or not. Certainly think unobtrusive may have been his intent because she says “silently removed bag from her shoulder”
MrsTerryPratchett · 15/05/2021 15:20

It’s really what servants used to do anyway...just silently take bags, help get coat off etc without needing to be asked or acknowledged.

I don't like this servile nonsense. However, a good servant would silently indicate what they were doing. A hand out, a smile. This weirdo just took the bag without any indication. And I bet he touched her, no matter what OP says. 'Wide straps' my arse.

Im going to be honest...

still confused as to WHO removed the bag from WHO's shoulder .. are they married or not ?

I thought it was OP's Sister and OP's Sisters husband removed the bag?

Am I wrong 😳

From OP:

“Was with sister earlier and she had a bag that she was going to give to the husband of her friend

Sister’s friend’s husband took the bag.

Sister’s husband wasn’t there.

Fecking bold fail...

husband of her friend

SultanOfSwing · 15/05/2021 22:12

I think your sister was being reasonable to have not liked it. It was a very intimate gesture - loving in a partner: wordlessly relieving you of a burden; weird and intrusive in a casual acquaintance.

thank you, makes sense now, I kept thinking it was her BIL

thank again Grin

thisplaceisweird · 16/05/2021 01:04

I like your sister

Talk to her about it! I bet she is feeling weird too, might help you both

lljkk · 16/05/2021 01:18

I'm with OP who witnessed the situation -- the sister over-reacted.

worriedatthemoment · 16/05/2021 02:08

Well they prob won't be lending her their cutlery again

BadNomad · 16/05/2021 02:58

A person did something that made your sister uncomfortable so she told them not to do it again? I'm not seeing the issue. Good for her. He won't do it again with her and hopefully not think twice about invade anyone else's personal space.

BadNomad · 16/05/2021 02:59

*now think twice

Rmka · 16/05/2021 03:36

OP, I'm with your sister. I'd let my husband or a close friend take a bag this way, but not a friend's husband I barely know.
Anyway it's for her to decide how she felt about it. Your emotional reaction is irrelevant.

georgarina · 16/05/2021 03:46

I agree with the suggestion that he might have been inappropriate with her before, esp if that's an unusual response from her

Sleepplease1111 · 16/05/2021 04:17

I wouldn’t like it if someone I nearly know came up to me without saying a word and took a bag off my back.

Guavafish · 16/05/2021 04:30

A little over the top but there must be a reason. She was possibly startled
