Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

Mint malteaser buttons...was like eating discs of toothpaste.

OwlIsBeingAnOwl · 09/05/2021 20:42

Root beer - although beware, you can get gum called 'wintergreen' flavour and it's the worst flavour in the world, the same thing that root beer is made of.
It's kind of like cinnamon might taste in the Upside Down - all the warmth replaced with freezing poisonous medicine flavour.

Loads of lovely-looking fresh soups you can get in pots at the supermarkets all taste of something grim, not sure if it's been pasteurised or processed but there's often a nasty artificially bitter/peppery taste (Ella's etc pouches often similar). I'm really picky about what soups I like now (the Yorkshire Provender ones are usually OK).

I like some fruit teas but admit they're disappointing often - what you really want is hot squash/cordial.

redcandlelight · 09/05/2021 20:43

mint sauce.
goat curry.

OwlIsBeingAnOwl · 09/05/2021 20:44

@Thelnebriati

IDK is anyone has said it yet but fresh coriander. I bought some to make a curry and thought I'd accidentally added washing up liquid. To me it tastes like soap.
See, I LOVE fresh coriander and eat dishes with it several times a week! It doesn't taste soapy to me but lovely and fresh, really lifts a dish. Plus it's a key part of the best foods - SE Asian, Indian, Mexican... There's meant to be some genetic predisposition to it tasting grim though...?

Wensleydale with cranberries belongs in the unexpectedly amazing thread!

dontforgettofloss · 09/05/2021 20:46

Tbf, I trusted slimming world to provide nice meals, Iceland or not! They have a whole range of ready meals, soups, sausages, burgers, but I'm sure that I'll never ever buy any of them again!

Those seaweed thins had better not be in the unexpectedly amazing food thread!

Giggorata · 09/05/2021 20:47

The most beautiful looking hand made sweets in the Indian grocer's. I chose with care, took a huge bite and it was like lard with icing sugar. 😖

gollymissdolly · 09/05/2021 20:47

Root beer.Tried it on holiday in the USA.Tasted like cough mixture.
Truly awful.

ExhaustedFlamingo · 09/05/2021 20:47

@OvaHere
Oooooo.....I've just found them and am considering ordering them.....see what I mean?? I'm so easily influenced.

If they taste shit I'm coming back for you..... 😅😅

MiddlesexGirl · 09/05/2021 20:47

@Chicchicchicchiclana

Vegan cheese ... just fuck off! I'm happy to eat a vegan burger, leave the hideous slice of "cheese" muck off it please.
Ah yes this. Vegan cheese just tastes like ..... old leather? And you're right - no burger, vegan or otherwise, needs cheese.
LadyPoison · 09/05/2021 20:49

Root beer - I was so disappointed.

Also fake veggie/vegan fish - most horrible stuff ever

CrayonedWalls · 09/05/2021 20:49

Zero carb pasta and noodles. Sure I was asking for it but they look just like rice noodles! Reeeeeevolting. And no amount of sauce fixes them. They aren’t even food 😂

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 09/05/2021 20:50

Apparently Hershey’s use a process called controlled lipolysis when making their chocolate - this process makes butyric acid, which is in Parmesan and vomit. From what I have read, they do this on purpose, to give their chocolate its unique taste - and now other chocolate manufacturers in the US add butyric acid to their chocolate, to mimic the taste of Hershey’s.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 09/05/2021 20:50

I've just had a look at the Itsu seaweed that you're talking about. I've not tried it but I do like this Kirkland one, Costco sells it as do other online sites. I can easily eat a whole packet of it!

It's never going to replace Wotsits in my snack of choice but, it's a healthy alternative with a wallop of iron which is useful.

@OwlIsBeingAnOwl

Yes! Apparently there's some specific taste bud/sensor that only some people have/don't have that makes coriander taste soapy and disgusting.

I love coriander. Garlic and coriander bread tastes amazing.

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 09/05/2021 20:50

@ItsFor

Not food. Cadbury's chocolate. I used to love it but that was years ago. It tastes foul now.
Yes! What happened to it?! I was never a massive fan but I had one of the kids Easter eggs a few weeks ago and it felt like I had a mouthful of fluff!
GlutenFreeGingerCake · 09/05/2021 20:51

Not saying it was completely unexpected but those slim noodles made of long as so slimy and rubbery.

mycatchichi · 09/05/2021 20:51

I love the seaweed thins. The salt ones are my least favourite flavour but I still like them !

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 09/05/2021 20:52
  • slim noodles made of konjac, not long
dontforgettofloss · 09/05/2021 20:53

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop

A Waitrose cauliflower curry. It tasted like somebody else's burp.
Grinthis actually made me laugh out loud ConfusedGrin

Mash, bananas, aubergine and courgette. Yuck.

Beetlebrooker · 09/05/2021 20:54

Wensleydale with cranberries - like greasy hard plastic, and so gritty!

Goats cheese - smells like molten plastic and arse, tastes similar.

Baked Camembert - smells like boiled piss and sour milk to me, tried a piece. NOPE.

Crispy seaweed - everyone raves about it, I assumed it would be salty deliciousness. Took a big mouthful, was like swallowing a gulp of seawater. Felt like my mouth and gullet turned inside out with horror.

And of course, Hersheys chocolate. Apparently it contains the same acid found in vomit, hence the bile-like flavour.

Sea Bass. Utterly indescribable. Or was it whitebait? Can't remember, but I expected some variety of white fish and was assaulted with the oddest, strongest flavour.

onlyhereforthefood · 09/05/2021 20:54

Kombucha

How anyone can drink that voluntarily is beyond me.

EsmaCannonball · 09/05/2021 20:55

Pickled walnuts! I like walnuts and I like pickled onions and so on, so I thought I'd like these. They were expensive and absolutely bloody disgusting. The texture was all wrong. I thought they'd retain their firmness but they were all soft and brain-like. Len Goodman is welcome to them. All of them.
