Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

Turkish Delight.

The disappointment was epic after watching Chronicles of Narnia.

When I was a child a woman who was looking after me, not a permanent child minder, must have been a friend of the family, bought me a Turkish Delight because she was buying one for her daughter. It made me want to vomit and then she got angry because I wouldn't eat it and it was all mildly traumatic. I have a bit of a Fry's Turkish Delight phobia as a result of it. I've never tried proper Turkish Delight which might well be quite nice but even the name gives me the horrors.
NutellaEllaElla · 09/05/2021 20:16

Kimchi. I expected to like it, lots of people do. I tried it as a garnish at Wagamamas and it made me properly heave.

TheTroubleWithShoes · 09/05/2021 20:16

*Urgh are your tastebuds still alive? sad Mine went in the bin I didn't want to even look at the packet a second more."

I'll be holding a minute's silence in memory of those lovely wastes seaweed thins.

I have to agree with Hershey's. Though that's why I also detest parmesan, and papaya. They all taste of vomit.

Root beer is one of the worst things I've ever put in my mouth.

Raw tomatoes. They look so good but taste terrible. They make me gag.

Tahini. I love hummus, nut butters and sesame seeds so I thought thay I'd love tahini. No, it's inedible. Incredibly bitter and just plain disgusting.

@CirqueDeMorgue

Don't know if it's unexpected but celery. When you consider that cucumber and other crudités are lovely, celery is just urgh.
Celery tastes like earth/dirt. Cucumber is super refreshing
hparkins · 09/05/2021 20:17

not a food but a drink. vodka and coke - it makes me heave as soon as I try it, it's my partners absolute favourite.

tastes like flat diet coke with a bitter after taste to me. urgh

Roadtohades · 09/05/2021 20:17

I love candied angelica as cake decorations etc., so when I grew an angelica plant in my garden I decided to have a nibble on a piece of stalk. NEVER do this! The taste was beyond vile. I had to rush indoors and stuff my mouth with salty cheese to get rid of the overwhelming taste of awfulness. I shudder when I even think about it.

@LubaLuca

A beautiful-looking Victoria sandwich cake from an expensive farm shop - it tasted of nothing but margarine. I didn't learn my lesson and still keep buying cake that is nowhere near as nice as those I can bake myself.
The farm shop near us that sells cakes also sells bulk quantities of pet food. The last sponge cake I bought from there had acquired the distinctive aroma of dog biscuits.

Needless to say, I haven't bought any more of their cakes!

DamnitImTired · 09/05/2021 20:18

I love a good coffee but nespresso coffee pods urgh ... coffee tastes like an ashtray to me!

Roussette · 09/05/2021 20:18

No you don’t, rare game is vile

It is something that is cooked rare, apparently. Seen it on masterchef rare. Anyhooo, I hated it!

I can never work out who buys these fruity teas? Their shelf space is immense, yet I have to hunt for any loose leaf tea that I like.

tinkyywinky · 09/05/2021 20:19

Proper buffalo mozzarella - much prefer the cheap mozzarella!

LampHat · 09/05/2021 20:19

@Sparklingbrook

Itsu Seaweed Thins Sea Salt are revolting. Bought them as a healthy snack but has to have a Haribo to take the taste away.
Oh my god I had repressed the memory of eating those Envy
KitchenWarrior · 09/05/2021 20:20

@WeatherwaxOn

Quorn vegan pepperoni - it actually tastes fine but the texture is dreadful - it just disintegrates as you try to get it out of the packet. Any brand (so far) vegan 'chicken style' nuggets or meatballs. Possibly okay if you've never actually eaten food before. Texture of the latter is like bath sponges. Taste and texture of the former is as unlike any chicken flavoured/style thing ever.
The frozen quorn crispy nuggets are nice although they are vegetarian not vegan (contain egg). It's 20 years since I had an actual chicken nugget so I can't vouch for how chickenish they actually are.

I was tempted by some pineapple flavoured jaffa cakes as they were on offer, they're vile.

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2021 20:21

@LampHat, I apologise for the reminder. It's only been about a week for me, I'm hoping time will heal. Flowers

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 09/05/2021 20:21

Totally agree with Hershey's choc. Tbh, 90% of the food I ate in the US was disgusting. Even the salads lousy, swimming in dressing like an oil slick. The exception was the seafood I ate in San Francisco, which was awesome.

Other stuff that's should be nice but is really disappointing:

Most posh crisps - Tyrells, Pipers, Real etc. None of which are a patch on Walkers. (And in any case, everyone knows that Wotsits and Frazzles are the best crisps in the world.)

Pretty much any ravioli dish I've had a restaurant - nearly always just 3 or 4 giant pieces of flabby, bland pasta with a tiny lump of flavour in the middle. Do not see the point.

Halloumi. Cheese should not squeak when you eat it. It's letting the side down.

cupsofcoffee · 09/05/2021 20:22

Hershey's chocolate.
Cadbury's chocolate.
Chicago Town pizza.
Spinach.
Herbal tea.
Any instant hot chocolate drink.

Chicchicchicchiclana · 09/05/2021 20:23

Oysters. And I'll eat anything (apart from cucumber) but I honestly believe anyone who claims to enjoy glugging down an oyster is raving about it because they think it makes them look cool.

supercee · 09/05/2021 20:23

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop @RosaLuxemburgwasright

I made my mum run out and get me the proper powdered stuff in a fancy box after watching The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe. Vile. So gutted.

Think I gave the Fry's one a bash after watching the advert with the desert and the sword. Still vile.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 09/05/2021 20:23

Trifle

OvaHere · 09/05/2021 20:24

And the disappointment with the fruity teas......so many times I get lured back by someone insisting that "this one tastes really lovely, really fruity" - SPOILER: no it doesn't. They never do. I don't know why I keep believing people.

YES! I have so many opened packets of the stuff. I really want to be a person who enjoys fruit tea and each time I find a new brand I'm suckered in and think "this might be the one". It never is.

But I do really like the new Yorkshire Tea - toast and jam flavour. Sounds like it should be nasty but actually really lovely. The Biscuit flavour one isn't bad either.

Greenmarmalade · 09/05/2021 20:24

@Sparklingbrook those seaweed thins are intensely rank! Sooo disappointed!

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/05/2021 20:24

@ShinySquirrel

Most fruity teas. They smell like orchards and taste of perfumed disappointment.
I couldn't have expressed it better.
SpnBaby1967 · 09/05/2021 20:25

Turkish delight

I made Mary Berry's cheese scones. Followed the recipe to the letter, ugh, tasted like vomit & I LOVE scones and cheese. DH and DS loved them though.

Greenmarmalade · 09/05/2021 20:25

@BatleyTownswomensGuild

Halloumi. Cheese should not squeak when you eat it. It's letting the side down.

The squeak is a key factor in halloumi’s appeal!

OvaHere · 09/05/2021 20:26

To add - apologies if you buy this now and really hate it thus adding me to the list of people who have said "this is lovely". Grin

SchadenfreudePersonified · 09/05/2021 20:27

@AnUnoriginalUsername

American food. I got one of those treat box deliveries and none of it even tasted like actual food. And when we went to America even the actual food didn't. Veg and fruit is just water, it doesn't taste of anything.
Totally agree - almost all American food seems to taste either of nowt, or the way vomit smells.

I'm surprised they haven't all died of rickets or something.
