Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

Most shellfish. Why on Earth? Most of it just tastes like salty fish with the texture of snot with the occasional shot of gristle. Pointless and disgusting. I tolerate prawns, crab, lobster and scallops but that's it.

Goats cheese is the devil's excrement. And soft Brie / Camembert type cheeses are pretty awful too. I want so much to like them but just can't.

mightbealittlebitmad · 10/05/2021 07:46

Morrisons Broccoli and Stilton Soup.

I had made my own not long before and despite not really liking stilton I thought it was really nice so after I ran out I bought some.

Worse idea ever, the texture was bizarre and the taste was too. I had a couple of spoonfuls and chucked the rest of the pot then gave the 2 unopened ones to my friend who loved broccoli and stilton soup. She couldn't eat it either so no idea how the people who made it got it so wrong. Will stick to making my own I think!

There is nothing unexpected about snails being disgusting, @Embracingthechaos Grin

Sparklingbrook · 10/05/2021 07:48

I am very reassured that the majority think those plasticky green squares of plastic dried rock pool slime are indeed 🤮

In full agreement with the seafood...the soft cheese thing it really depends what you buy.

With brie and camambert I only like the really mild ones and the only goats cheese I like is the soft one that I think is described as chevre or something, comes in a rectangular kind of packet.

I never get the hype for Percy pigs ! Sickly and revolting, not a patch on haribos.

Alondra · 10/05/2021 08:13

American food, pretty much all of it except very expensive restaurants. Used as I am to Spain and Australia where good food can be inexpensive, it took me by surprise how much crap Americans eat.

BonnieDundee · 10/05/2021 08:15

Honeycomb kit kat. Sounds delicious doesn't it?

I won't be buying them again

Quillboard · 10/05/2021 08:18

Martini - so disappointing!
Fruit teas - grim
Quorn - just WHY?? Meat fish tofu beans dairy all taste great
Cadbury’s dairy milk - well just bleurgh
Bran flakes ?!
Pickled onions - no words...

Livelovebehappy · 10/05/2021 08:23

Couscous. Thought I’d try it as I know lots of people who rave about it. It was really bland and an awful texture. Muesli for the same reasons.

Shellfish is pure ambrosia and when is fresh it tastes like fresh sea.

I agree that goat's cheese is not that nice specially when fresh like feta. Being a Spaniard and having grown with sheep and goat cheese I can assure you goat cheese tastes very different when properly cured for 12 months. It's delicious.

looptheloopinahulahoop · 10/05/2021 08:30

It looks like this thread has widened out to anything you don't like as opposed to unexpectedly awful so my list is:

Tinned tuna
Baked beans
Goats cheese and milk
Cheerios
Blue cheese (though I like broccoli and stilton soup)

pawsbaws · 10/05/2021 08:37

I’m with you on Hershey’s. I still remember trying it 20 years ago and my response.

Also some comments on food in the USA. Been there 3 times and I love the place and the people. But apart from some decent food in NYC, where it’s easy to find ethnic food, I’ve come to the conclusion that they have bizarre tastes and don’t understand what actual food is.

Also when I google recipes I can tell which one is American, as it;s always massively complicated, with way too many ingredients that just don’t belong.

itssquidstella · 10/05/2021 08:41

Oh I love a snail, @Lanique

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 10/05/2021 08:43

I can't think of anything in particular off the top of my head but I do often wonder how prepared foodstuffs have passed quality assurance and taste tests. And often fruit (think clementines and satsumas in particular) are really dry and not edible from the point of purchase.

Fluffandbubbles · 10/05/2021 08:43

Hummus , everyone raves about it but it tastes like hay/ decomposing vegetables.

1940s · 10/05/2021 08:47

Haribo
Avocado
Udon noodles
Fried egg

Lightswitchesoffatnight · 10/05/2021 08:51

I love seafood. 🦐❤️

RiojaRose · 10/05/2021 08:52

Another vote for truffle oil. I think some people experience it as woody or musky but to me it evokes male crotch sweat, and not in a good way. I’ve eaten many things I didn’t particularly like, but truffle oil was really disgusting to me.

DamnitImTired · 10/05/2021 09:05

I have a friend who hates coriander. Says it tastes like soap. Lots on google about it.

Same, I was really excited about the Cheesecake Factory, who doesn't like a massive slab of cheesecake? It was disgusting and seems to have been thickened with cornflour and lard.
YetGo · 10/05/2021 09:10

M&S Parmentier potatoes. So much disappointment. Grey soggy potatoes with all the buttery coating stuck to the tray. Even with a tonne of oil and salt didn't perk up.

poundoflard · 10/05/2021 09:10

Yes yes to all the vile American foodstuffs. Oreos, Hershey, twinkeys all gross.
I hated the food in the USA came home half stone lighter 😁.

Their packed mash potatoes is revolting. Just why?
A friend said he missed mash potato as he only had it at Thanksgiving , out a box.
Ironic thing is he lives in Idaho which is potato heaven . They couldn't understand the need to peel and boil a spud to enjoy mashed potatoes ALL YEAR ROUND!!

Sitchervice · 10/05/2021 09:12

I used to be on the slimming word diet. I hated it and I hated the idea of having to be on this diet for the rest of my life.

I was reading a recipe that involved Quark. I've heard Quark has no taste. They were wrong. It tastes like torture....

greeneyedlulu · 10/05/2021 09:12

Lobster..... its just a massive prawn! Why is it so raved about and so expensive.
