Unexpectedly disgusting food

dontforgettofloss · 09/05/2021 18:52

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

Blue cheese, just why would you eat mouldy food Grin

Rare meat (I'll go medium if I'm feeling brave otherwise mid-well), blood etc.

nancywhitehead · 10/05/2021 06:23

You expected a frozen slimming world ready meal to not be disgusting? Confused

Disagree about the wensleydale with cranberry, though. I love that stuff Grin

Fivemoreminutes1 · 10/05/2021 06:29

Percy Pig dessert sauce

Lupinhere37 · 10/05/2021 06:31

@Betterversionofme I felt the same the first time I tried Percy Pig sweets. Stuck in the car with a colleague, driving to a conference. She was pregnant and loving the Percy Pigs. Persuaded me to try one. OMG; I can still taste the greasy, slimy little critters, three years later. I really wanted to stop on the motorway to spit it out but obviously we couldn’t. Awful! The ice cream must have been very traumatic!

polkadotpixie · 10/05/2021 06:33

Those aloe vera drinks...I thought they would be delicious and refreshing but they were disgusting with the consistency of vomit 🤮

torquewench · 10/05/2021 06:35

Starbucks coffee, any variety. And their takeaway cups always smell fishy.

indy2please · 10/05/2021 06:41

@newtb

Marrow bone jelly just like greasy snot. Tête de veau - I've heaved trying to eat it. Heart - of any sort
Are those really unexpectedly bad? I would not have expected any of those to be delicious?!
indy2please · 10/05/2021 06:46

@Talkwhilstyouwalk

Biscotti. Dry, bland and breaks your teeth.
Dunk it in espresso SmileWink
Claire4567 · 10/05/2021 06:50

Moon cakes - very special and very expensive cakes made to celebrate the Chinese mid autumn festival. £30 for a box of four and they were packaged so prettily. Tasted absolutely vile. moon cakes

@CityCommuter

When I first went on holiday to the USA as a teenager in the 1990's I couldn't wait to try Hershey's chocolate that I'd seen on lots of American TV shows and films...

Anyway after the first bite I was sure it had gone off as the taste is so odd it can only be described as tasting like vomit! That's the nearest description to it... The chocolate hadn't gone off, it actually really does taste like that (to anyone who hasn't tried it yet btw).... I couldn't and still can't understand how my American relatives go wild for this taste and love that chocolate... I'm NOT exaggerating btw, it's truly yucky!

And is weirdly gritty. Tastes like they add Toddler vomit after they have been munching handfuls of sand from the sandpit.
tulippa · 10/05/2021 07:06

I'm going to go against the grain and say I actually like seaweed thins. I can understand why other people don't though.

Agree with vegan cheese. Went vegan three months ago and cheese has been a real stumbling block for me. Vegan cheese tastes like blocks of margarine injected with cheesy wotsit flavour. Bleurgh! I have found a couple of smoked ones that aren't too bad but still aren't great.

I would like to add sake as my disgusting thing. Same colour as wee. Tastes like warm vinegar. Yuck.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 10/05/2021 07:06

Expensive muesli. It often tastes like awful cheap coconut soap.

Expensive prosciutto: it tastes like dried blood. Iron-ish and yuck.

Olives, roasted chestnuts, Brazil nuts are all gross but people talk about how lovely they are. Nope yuck.

Couldn't agree more, vomit is exactly how I described the taste of Hershey's chocolate the first (and only) time I tasted it. It is absolutely disgusting, similarly can't understand why Americans like it.
Bluesheep8 · 10/05/2021 07:10

Avocado. But it's more of a textural thing. It's like eating a slightly mushy bar of soap.

Itgetsthehoseagain · 10/05/2021 07:18

Saffron. I once returned a pasta sauce to Waitrose (get me) because I was sure it had gone off, but the one they replaced it with smelt the same. I learned that it was The Saffron.

itssquidstella · 10/05/2021 07:19

Oh I hate Oreos. What a pointless waste of calories.

Krispy Kreme donuts taste like sugared bath sponges. I used to work in a school where the pupils would bring in Krispy Kremes for the class on their birthdays, which meant I had to politely reject one at least twenty times a year.

Also agree with @Sparklingbrook about Pimms. Tastes like ditchwater sweetened with aspartame and treats your mouth like a cloakroom (leaves little furry coats on your teeth).

Stormwhale · 10/05/2021 07:19

Microwave packet rice. I always think the flavours sound nice and they are always disgusting.

KinseyWinsey · 10/05/2021 07:19

@Lemonyfuckit @citycommuter

butyric acid is found in vomit and Hershey's.

Livpool · 10/05/2021 07:26

Avocado 🤢
Aniseed - anything although tarragon is the most evil thing I have ever tasted
Guacamole
Olives
Celery
Mushrooms

Livpool · 10/05/2021 07:26

Also agree about Aperol - what a waste of sparkling wine

Embracingthechaos · 10/05/2021 07:35

Escargot.

Had it on two separate occasions, both in very fancy restaurants where it was supposed to be fantastic.

It was disgusting.

ScottChegg · 10/05/2021 07:37

Campari. Well Joan Collins liked it in the ads, didn't she! I was anticipating something delicious but it tastes like soap.

enjoyingscience · 10/05/2021 07:39

DS absolutely loves seaweed thins, he used to take them to school in his packed lunch box (and get the piss ripped out of him for it, but never mind). I always thought they tasted like sick - glad it’s not just me.

Yes yes also to Cadbury’s chocolate, especially the new ‘dark milk’ - I actually spat it out it was that bad.

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 10/05/2021 07:40

@Sparklingbrook

Itsu Seaweed Thins Sea Salt are revolting. Bought them as a healthy snack but has to have a Haribo to take the taste away.
Yup, another one who was revolted by these horrors. I (stupidly) thought they'd taste something like the crispy seaweed you get from a Chinese takeaway, (yes I know that's not really seaweed...). The taste was more like taking a gulp of sea air at low tide, adjacent to somebody gutting fish 🤮🤮🤮.
longwayoff · 10/05/2021 07:45

Itsu Seaweed Thins. Bought 6 packs to help with my unfortunate crisp yearnings. Ugh. Utterly horrible. Fobbed them off on a relative who found them delicious. He'll eat anything fishy. Weird.
