Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

Hersheys is gross, but its because it has more butyric acid in it than european chocolate - the milk content is processed at a lower temperature. Yuck. Butyric acid is also in puke.

Back in the day before all things veggie/vegan were trying to replicate meat so hard you can't tell the difference, I used to happily eat any veggie/vegan stuff, safe in the knowledge I would not encounter gristly bits, bouncey bits, horrible textures etc..

No longer so. I had to give OH a 'Zinger Burger' as whilst the flavour was nice, whatever the hell it was made from was like the toughest stringiest bounciest old meat you've ever had the misfortune to be served. Rank!

@FedUp1984

Great minds, it was awful wasn't it!!

newtb · 09/05/2021 22:29

Even in the 60s on holiday in the US hersheys was shite. I was 8 and until then had never been defeated by chocolate. The dog's good boy choc drops were better. Some years later I bought some chunks of chocolate on the market. Just the same as if gone off and stale.

@gurglebelly

Fitnakes - high protein/low sugar cakes, regardless of flavour they are dry and salty and disgusting 🤢
@gurglebelly I read that as Nitflakes and wondered why you were surprised they tasted bad 🤮

@CirqueDeMorgue

Don't know if it's unexpected but celery. When you consider that cucumber and other crudités are lovely, celery is just urgh.
I gave My 5 year old DD celery the other day. Just, you know, trying new stuff.

She looked at it and asked 'what's this?' I explained it was celery and she looked very confused....'why's it on my PLATE?'

It wasn't eaten.

@TheTroubleWithShoes

Itsu Seaweed Thins Sea Salt are revolting. Bought them as a healthy snack but has to have a Haribo to take the taste away.

I''m addicted to these. Wasabi would be my first choice but I love the salted ones too.

I'm also a big fan of Turkish Delight so if anyone has any seaweed thins or Turkish delight that they wish to dispose of, send them here.

I'm with you - love Seaweed Thins and Turkish Delight .... but OMG, went to NY and visited the Hershey's store years ago and was nearly sick with the overwhelming smell of it. Was so looking forward to trying it and the taste was as bad as the smell. So disappointed!

Butterbeer, at the Harry Potter studio tour. The books make it sound delicious, and I was so excited to try it.
What a let down.
Vile, disgusting stuff

I was about to say this. I thought it would taste like butterscotch angel delight. It was like dirty dishwater. We poured it out and just kept the cups.

Lightswitchesoffatnight · 09/05/2021 22:33

Goats cheese. It tastes like goats smell. Paneer, yuk.

LEMtheoriginal · 09/05/2021 22:34

I like pigeon, my ex boss used to make a stew with pigeon marinaded in coke.

Im.a vet nurse and we often get pigeons brought into work with infected injuries.

One day DP and me went to local poncy resturant. He had seared pigeon breast, it smelt just like the pigeons brought into work. So i held my nose and tried some. Tasted..... fucking amazing

Solasum · 09/05/2021 22:35

All fruit teas are massively improved by adding sugar

LEMtheoriginal · 09/05/2021 22:37

Parma violets Envy why???

FedUp1984 · 09/05/2021 22:38

Genderwitched absolute disappointment in a cup.

BlodynFioled I don't know if you're familiar with Werthers Original, but in my head, it was going to taste like them in liquid form. As soon as I saw it, I knew I was wrong and my heart sank.

Rattysparklebum · 09/05/2021 22:39

Am I the only person who thinks beetroot tastes of mud? I keep trying to like it but it brings back memories of having a mouthful of gritty soil as a child for some reason.

Meme69 · 09/05/2021 22:39

Goats cheese. Fucking vile. The number of posh buffets I've been to for work and ended up having to spit canapés into a napkin discreetly then find somewhere to stuff it

greeneyedlulu · 09/05/2021 22:40

KFC..... its so shit! After watching a documentary on it and how they make their gravy, god I could have vomited on the spot (cleaned out a grease tray to add to the gravy) and then we last got a takeaway to find a lovely dark hair in my mouth which I'm pretty sure wasn't mine.... I'll give it a miss from now on. But I always want it to be nice!

rockpaperscissorsagain · 09/05/2021 22:40

Agree with Solasum - fruit teas need a lot of sugar before they taste of fruit - then you get a really strong fruity flavour!

Hippychickster · 09/05/2021 22:40

@bumcat

Raw oysters. Not unexpectedly disgusting, I suppose. I had a feeling they would feel like swallowing phlegm, I just really really wanted to like them. They always seemed like such a glamorous thing to have alongside chamlagnr. But no. They shouldn’t be a thing.

They should be a thing because they are fucking delicious!!!!

greeneyedlulu · 09/05/2021 22:41

@LEMtheoriginal

Parma violets Envy why???
My DP loves those!! Old lady perfume in a sweet 🤢🤢

No, they really shouldn't!

hyperbole001 · 09/05/2021 22:45

Fois Gras is vile. Don't believe anybody can enjoy the taste of that

I thought it was just me. Bloody vile, I'm sure it was nice when I was young though
TatianaBis · 09/05/2021 22:46

Agreed, foie gras tastes of cat food.

hyperbole001 · 09/05/2021 22:46

Also, I hate blue cheese. Tastes of vomit. In fact, most soft cheeses I don't enjoy, particularly brie. That said, I don't mind goats cheese

newtb · 09/05/2021 22:46

Butyric acid is in rancid butter and smelly feet. Explains a lot.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 09/05/2021 22:49

@supercee

Turkish Delight.

The disappointment was epic after watching Chronicles of Narnia.

Yes! Like eating a dead flower.
