Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

Olives. They taste poisonous, not like any sort of food should taste.

Alcemeg · 09/05/2021 22:06

Smoked salmon. I was so disappointed when I first had it. A boss brought some in as a treat and I was nearly gagging. Slimy fishy nonsense with an unpleasant persistence like cod liver oil.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 09/05/2021 22:07

Liquorice all sorts not just Liquorice allsorts confectionery: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquorice

Blueberrywhirl320 · 09/05/2021 22:08

@SchrodingersImmigrant I haven't tried the katsu ones, definitely won't bother considering the normal ones were absolutely vile 🤢

FedUp1984 · 09/05/2021 22:08

Butterbeer, at the Harry Potter studio tour. The books make it sound delicious, and I was so excited to try it.
What a let down.
Vile, disgusting stuff.

Whymrsrobinson · 09/05/2021 22:08

ShinySquirrel
They smell like orchards and taste of perfumed disappointment.
This is Sheer poetic genius!

Ninkanink · 09/05/2021 22:11

@BriocheForBreakfast yes, wild blueberries are delicious. We used to pick them on the hills in Norway and there’s really no comparison.

mrshonda · 09/05/2021 22:11

PP is spot on about root beer. It tastes like Germolene smells.

luccyloo · 09/05/2021 22:12

Hershey's chocolate for me too - tastes of vomit.

spongedog · 09/05/2021 22:13

@ eatsleepread @balkanscot

OK, last one from me: Indian food in general. I just find it too heavy & don’t like the spices in any combination/shape/form. Again, bizarrely, I absolutely love Thai curries. Go figure!

Snap.

Now I can eat Indian, Thai or Indonesian all day long but please dont bore me with Chinese. I am vegetarian and I know some of it is the vegetables that are used, yet others love a chinese.

ginislife · 09/05/2021 22:14

Dr Pepper
Root Beer
Butter Beer
Anything goat - I can smell it a mile away. Vile
Oreos
Hershey's
Oysters
Sprouts. I try every so often but always awful

mycatchichi · 09/05/2021 22:15

I also hate Hershey's, however the cookies and cream one weirdly doesn't takes nasty and of vomit like the others.

Genderwitched · 09/05/2021 22:17

The root beer reminded me of when we all went as a family to the Warner Bros Harry Potter studio thing. After we had been round, we all decided to treat ourselves to a glass of butterbeer each, the kids were excited, we were excited. It cost an absolute fortune.

Oh my lord it was horrible, so sweet and synthetic tasting. I couldn't finish it and I eat most things.

Poor Dh finished all of them because he couldn't bear the waste of money.

goldielockdown2 · 09/05/2021 22:18

Yeah back when American sweets and things were a novelty to get over here, the DC excitedly offered me one of their Herseys kisses chocolates. Not only does it taste like vomit, it smells just like it as well.
We can't all be wrong!

wtheck · 09/05/2021 22:18

Wasabi seaweed Sad

hopingforabrighterfuture2021 · 09/05/2021 22:20

Custard

Rice pudding

Cereal (nearly all kinds, I just don’t like it. I want to, but I can’t). See also, porridge.

Mango. Love the idea, hate the texture.

Blueberries and bananas. Envy not envy

TheCreationOfDistance · 09/05/2021 22:20

Red Bull and any similar energy drinks, aka Calpol cocktail

Letsrunabath · 09/05/2021 22:21

I thought I didn’t like honey until I tasted local honey. It’s 4 times n
More expensive but worth every penny.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 09/05/2021 22:21

Another one who can't stand goat. It's how I imagine seriously off mutton would taste, even strong spices in curry don't seem to neutralise it!

ladygoingGaga · 09/05/2021 22:21

Goat Milk, wanted to love it, I like goat cheese, but the milk is just rancid.
Actually tastes like a goat smells - just awful.

SoftSheen · 09/05/2021 22:21

Goats' cheese. It smells exactly like an unwashed billy goat.

SoftSheen · 09/05/2021 22:22

X-post with ladygoingGaga! Grin

thenightsky · 09/05/2021 22:23

@ILoveShula

Sourdough bread
Agree. Tough, tasteless and useless as a vehicle for cheese or anything.
NotMiranda · 09/05/2021 22:25

@Thecurtainsofdestiny

Truffle oil. Tastes of decay.

Balsamic vinegar. Just not nice.

I love you, although I would add "burning rubber" to the truffle oil description.
HTH1 · 09/05/2021 22:25

Love Fry’s normal Turkish Delight but I tried the lemon ones and they are absolutely disgusting.

Grapefruit is what evil must taste like.

Also hate tomato juice/Bloody Mary and anything with fresh ginger (eg ‘healthy’ smoothies).
