Unexpectedly disgusting food

Just been reading the unexpectedly amazing food thread, and thought I'd post about food that I thought would be nice but wasn't.

The slimming world beef stroganoff from Iceland- it looked lovely on the packet, and smelt quite nice while it was cooking- but it tasted awful, really watery with a weird aftertaste

Wensleydale with cranberry- again, it looked nice, but tasted like vomit

OP posts:

Various cooked/smoked cut meats from Aldi and Lidl - often raw in the middle - the factory 'curing' didn't make it that far so in the bin it goes.

gurglebelly · 09/05/2021 21:13

Fitnakes - high protein/low sugar cakes, regardless of flavour they are dry and salty and disgusting 🤢

greeneyedlulu · 09/05/2021 21:13

@BumCat

*chamlagnr!?!? CHAMPAGNE.
Have you had too much chamlagnr?? 🤣
BumCat · 09/05/2021 21:13

@FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop Well, It is Sunday! 😂

HoldontoOneMoreDay · 09/05/2021 21:13

@onlyhereforthefood

Kombucha

How anyone can drink that voluntarily is beyond me.

Yes, yes a million times yes @onlyhereforthefood

I feel like an alien - my town is full of trendy coffee shops with their own weirdy brands of kombucha. Places are even selling it in big bottles as an alternative to booze at the moment - 'missing champagne? Why not try our elegant kombucha instead?' Erm, no thank you Kyle the bartender with the twisty moustache, I'll stick to tap water.

sqirrelfriends · 09/05/2021 21:14

@CityCommuter you are so right, I bought a giant bag of Hershey's kisses on holiday and ended up chucking them in the bin. They were vile and my immediate impression was that they tasted like puke.

I bought some non alcoholic red wine when I was pregnant, really well rated on Ocado so I had high hopes- rank, it tasted of herby tomato juice.

Talkwhilstyouwalk · 09/05/2021 21:17

I love sweets and chocolates but not a fan of jelly babies or Lindt balls!

EsmaCannonball · 09/05/2021 21:17

I agree with the poster who mentioned Oreos. I know people who are mad about them but to me they taste like someone's dropped a teaspoon of cocoa in some brick-dust.

However, you can all send your Fry's Turkish Delights my way. I much prefer them to actual authentic Turkish delight. I dream of Fry bringing out a range of Turkish delight cakes, Turkish delight ice-cream, Turkish delight spread. Mmmm, heavenly.

MindBodyChocolate · 09/05/2021 21:19

Toffee apples. I’d read about them in Enid Blyton and imagined some kind of toffee fudgey sweet with a hint of apple. when I eventually convinced my tight parents to get me one on bonfire night I was soooo disappointed. It’s just an apple with the thinnest of thin sweet coatings. I’d rather just have an apple.

Chocolatebiscuitcollection · 09/05/2021 21:19

Agree on goats cheese. If you go to a petting farm and get close to a huge old grubby looking billy goat in his barn, that's exactly what goats cheese smells like that is.

Gemma2019 · 09/05/2021 21:19

Olives - they look like they should taste so delicious but they are literally the devil's food.

After Eight mints - reminds me of when I was 12 and vomited up my mum's creme de menthe liqueur. It's as if someone put that vomit between thin pieces of horrible chocolate in little bags.

Lo-Dough pizza bases - they are this amazing new low carb, low calorie gluten free invention where your pizza base is fewer than 40 calories. OMG it was like eating the cardboard disc you get underneath supermarket pizzas. Such a waste of toppings. And I had been so confident that this would be my new go-to food, I invested in a whole box of the bastards, which mocks me every time I open the cupboard. At the beginning of Covid when it was hard to get delivery slots I thought I might need to use them, but it turns out it wasn't life or death enough for that to happen.

@CirqueDeMorgue

Don't know if it's unexpected but celery. When you consider that cucumber and other crudités are lovely, celery is just urgh.
Celery is disgusting. And i say that as a full vegetarian who almost daily serves dip with every type of veggie crudites going (apart from celery of course). I am not inflexible - I like radish now - I didnt use to. Who wants stringy rubbish?
Wizzbangfizz · 09/05/2021 21:20

Supermarket sushi is pretty grim mostly but I bought some in Tesco for lunch - salmon - without realising it was smoked salmon - utterly disgusting and I spat it out.

balkanscot · 09/05/2021 21:20

I second Hershey’s (stinky vomit), cucumber (watery & devoid of taste, aka totally pointless), vegan cheese (smells & tastes of chicken feed), Turkish delight (overperfumed bollocks), oysters (slimy tasteless sludge that still somehow manages to lodge itself in my throat), celery (both cooked & raw - see description of cucumber but instead of watery add stringy waste of space).

I will add raisins to my list. They ruin cakes. Envy (not envy). Bizarrely, I love cranberries.

Lamb. And goat. And mutton. Musty vomit-inducing pile of shite. In every shape/form/dish. Just NO!

LockdownCheeseToastie · 09/05/2021 21:21

Pass the seaweed thins, kimchi, halloumi and rare game my way. You can keep the hersheys, fruit tea and celery.

balkanscot · 09/05/2021 21:24

I forgot goat’s cheese. I can smell it a mile away. It makes me heave from a mile away. Many a lovely sounding dish on restaurants’ menus has been ruined by addition of the bloody stuff. Just thinking about it now makes me all queasy. Vegetarian dishes including goat’s cheese can feck right off.

Kottbullar · 09/05/2021 21:24

I love so many of these things, root beer, cherry Jaffa cakes, cheese scones, all the cheeses.

Mine are
Tiger Bread, it's just crappy supermarket bread with a weird tasting crust,

Broccoli and Stilton soup, I love both but the soup is disgusting,

Tarragon, I made a chicken and tarragon pie it smelled delicious while it was cooking but the tarragon gave me an instant migraine.

Chinese takeaway others seem to love it but I've never had anything I've enjoyed.

Ice cream on a pancake, sounded delicious but it made the pancake rubbery.

gurglebelly · 09/05/2021 21:24

I would totally be up for that love LOVE Fry's Turkish delight, can't stand the gross proper Turkish delight

SO, SO true!
Kottbullar · 09/05/2021 21:26

Also coconut water, it sounds so refreshing, it tastes like tropical sweat!

smellywellies9 · 09/05/2021 21:28

Grapefruit - looks delicious and refreshing but tastes like someone is poisoning you

Olives - tastes like gone off feet and vomit soup

Smokeahontas · 09/05/2021 21:30

Coriander is the work of the devil & only deviants like it.

balkanscot · 09/05/2021 21:30

OK, last one from me: Indian food in general. I just find it too heavy & don’t like the spices in any combination/shape/form. Again, bizarrely, I absolutely love Thai curries. Go figure!

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2021 21:30

Agree cherry Jaffa cakes are rank but the pineapple ones are delicious.

Hershey’s, Oreos, Little Moons are all vile.
