Is there something you want but just can’t bear to buy?

I’ve posted before about how I am a self confessed shopping addict. I’ve put myself on a semi ban, and I’m allowed to buy necessities for myself or replace makeup items that have ran out but I am not to buy things just because I want them. I have saved almost £1000 in a month, which is frightening! The big “f**k it” purchases (maybe £300) combined with impulsively buying makeup, a new top here and there, chocolate, extra luxuries in grocery shop REALLY mounted up. So last night (I had been drinking) I ALMOST fell into the trap and bought myself a very expensive pair of trainers. I didn’t give in and I still haven’t. The guilt of spoiling how well I’ve done and how much I’ve saved would stop me even enjoying them. I’ll just stick to admiring them from afar. Are there any items you lust after, and technically could afford, but just can’t justify buying?

Another one for straight and white teeth. I saved for years to get it done then needed a crown and root canal that wiped out most of my savings. Not in a position to save any more.

Would also like some Doc Martins. I had some birthday money and was hoping to get some in the sales but couldn't get the ones I wanted and now the money is gone on new clothes for the boys.

@MagicSummer

A Mulberry Bayswater Handbag.

I gave mine to my stepdaughter. It was so heavy, even when it was empty, that I never used it.

I want a pair of Ancient Greek sandals with wings on the heels. I’m not buying them though, I really couldn’t justify such an expensive frivolity.

this thread reminded me of the lusted after diptyque candle, not much change from £50.
When lit it smelt like bathroom cleaner.

@flippertygibbit I love that makeup box! Might put it on my list.
This thread is dangerous.

@Blossomtoes I agree. I love the bayswater but they are so so heavy. Lots of other nice bags out there to consider though. For a similar style try fairfax and favour windsor. Much cheaper and lighter.

I think I might be the opposite. I can't think of anything I want. Just had a big birthday and didn't get presents from DH and kids because there's absolutely nothing I can identify that if I had I'd smile at everyone I saw it. MIL transferred £100 for my birthday into our account and it will go on groceries. I've got a long-term service award for works which needs to be spent on something (they don't offer cash) and I'm fairly sure I'm just going to ask if they can give it to a charity or something. I wouldn't say we are loaded (one car has 150k on the clock, we usually go camping in France for a fortnight every other year but haven't because of covid) but I feel very uncomfortable buying stuff for the sake of buying stuff. I really do wish I could get exciting about a handbag or something but my phone fits in my pocket so I don't really need a bag anymore

@KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse totally worth it if you're dark haired, I barely shave now but used to have to shave daily in the summer as I'm so dark

@LookingGlassMilk - I finally caved in and got one 2 months ago - it's worth every penny!!! I literally follow it around like a lovesick puppy!

For me its Phillips Lumea - I can afford it, just can't justify it.

I love those Bella Freud 1970 jumpers, but I absolutely couldn’t bring myself to spend that money on something every other woman has had on for years in my area.

Me too. I really like them but the cost is absurd and they’re ten a penny now. I would nab one if it came up second hand though!

@WeatherwaxLives sodastream is justifiable to save all the plastic. We have one on that basis and it’s worth it.

@SinkGirl

A MacBook Air. I’m struggling on with a crappy old Windows laptop for my business but really could do with a better laptop, but not making enough yet to justify it. I have the money but just feel too guilty to blow a grand on something I can just about manage without.

I want exactly this and I won't buy it for exactly the same reason as you.

Everything! There are so many things I want but can’t justify buying. After bills, feeding and clothing my kids there is very little left. What is left is put aside for emergencies.

I’d love to be able to just go and buy an outfit, shoes, makeup, anything really without thinking about how much it costs or without having to justify it.

Even my DCs clothes I justify. If I buy my oldest something new and at full retail I will justify it by the fact I have 3 DDs so it can be passed down. Although I do try my best not to pay full retail. I won’t pay full retail on anything for the little one unless you include a pair of leggings I bought from Poundland precovid when her nappy leaked and I didn’t have a spare pair.

I can’t actually remember the last time I bought something just because I wanted to, unless you include the bottle of wine I bought myself on Friday.

This thread is now making me look at adult tricycles! I like cycling, but am not overly confident, things like I wobble if a car speeds past me, and I live in London. So I don’t think it would be especially safe for me to ride a 2 wheeler. A 3 wheeler sounds much safer, but would people point and laugh? That’s what would hold me back.

We are pretty much the same. DSs are young adults now too and don't really want or need anything. DS1s 21st coming up and we gave him money and a nice watch and a couple of bits for his 18th and i'd sort of like to mark his 21st but he can't think of anything and neither can I. He doesn't really spend either so money seems a waste too.

We are tending to buy disposable type stuff for gifts now, it was our 25th anniversary recently and since we couldn't go out and have a nice meal or a night away, I bough DH a nice bottle of whisky and he bought me beautiful flowers. We both got a few weeks pleasure from those as it was a more expensive whisky than he'd buy himself and nicer flowers than I'd buy. DS2 can usually think of something but it tends to be a new book or a set of guitar strings or something. He is dyspraxic and tends to break or lose stuff (though at nearly 20 he is getting better) so there is usually something that needs replaced.

I'm tempted to maybe get DS1 a decent tool kit in the hope that he moves out at some point and uses it. Grin

Ohhhh!!! I love this thread.

To begin with, it was the jo malone candle. Then I got one for my birthday and another one soon (gift from DH). Currently waiting to move (new build, not sure if it'll happen this year) to use them. I can't bring myself to use them, am I crazy? Does anyone else do that? 😂

I just bought one as I wanted to turn some of my paper cutting templates into SVGs and cut some of my samples quicker so I can list more designs. I hate it. Even the light grip mat is so sticky that you damage anything intricate removing it from the mat plus it takes ages. Grr.

I have a dyson fan, one that purifies air, and I really rate it. As I hurtle towards menopause/hot flushes it is a necessity as well as a luxury.

My lustful eye is on an Aspinal tote bag. I (obviously) don't need another bag and I've nowhere nice to take it to, but it's so pretty to look at .....

I bought the horse. Grin I don't regret it.

On the other hand, I can't bring myself to replace my trainers, which have little holes in the uppers and basically flat and smooth soles, because they haven't yet totally fallen apart.

Either the Disney castle or the beatles flat picture. I find lego really therapeutic and relaxing but can't spend that much on a toy for myself as a grown up.

£44 for a lipstick? Holy crap!

I would love another horse. Mine is retired but still lives at a yard so costs a fair bit. I can’t justify doubling my costs. My DH wants to retire in 5 years (very early) so we’re saving to move somewhere less urban. We could afford a bit of land so maybe I could get another then and keep them at home.
