Is there something you want but just can’t bear to buy?

I’ve posted before about how I am a self confessed shopping addict. I’ve put myself on a semi ban, and I’m allowed to buy necessities for myself or replace makeup items that have ran out but I am not to buy things just because I want them. I have saved almost £1000 in a month, which is frightening! The big “f**k it” purchases (maybe £300) combined with impulsively buying makeup, a new top here and there, chocolate, extra luxuries in grocery shop REALLY mounted up. So last night (I had been drinking) I ALMOST fell into the trap and bought myself a very expensive pair of trainers. I didn’t give in and I still haven’t. The guilt of spoiling how well I’ve done and how much I’ve saved would stop me even enjoying them. I’ll just stick to admiring them from afar. Are there any items you lust after, and technically could afford, but just can’t justify buying?

Art. There are about 12 three paintings that I love by different artists, ranging from £200 to £500. I can afford the £200 one but feel guilty at the thought of buying it.

jannyapple · 12/05/2021 20:56

Me too @SunnySpills especially once we got rid of the rude Botox commenter

jannyapple · 12/05/2021 21:00

I've posted earlier of the things I have splurged on ... wastefully
Here is what I'd like if I could justify
Afford it

Veneers
Liposuction
Face lift
Prada tessutto handbag
Ford Puma in that gorgeous grey colour
I could go on ...

mermaidsariel · 12/05/2021 21:02

What this thread has taught me is that I’m not alone in feeling guilty about spending money on things I really want.

Blueberrywhirl320 · 12/05/2021 21:07

I've wanted a Pandora bracelet for quite some time. But the bracelet itself is expensive & then you've got the charms on top of that! Maybe some day!

Nesski · 12/05/2021 21:11

Boob lift, waiting to see what they look like after birth and go from there!

Gilead · 12/05/2021 21:18

Mulberry bag and new teeth. I wasn’t allowed to go to the dentist when I was married, unless it was an obvious infection. I only have 12 teeth left. I’d love implants but I’m over sixty and can neither afford nor justify.

Lookingoutside · 12/05/2021 21:21

So sorry to hear @Gilead. It sounds like you’re out of that situation now Flowers

Gilead · 12/05/2021 21:26

@Lookingoutside, thank you, I am, it was a few years ago and Mumsnet was amazing. I am happy and safe now.

Hmm, I'd like a tooth implant for a tooth that has to come out. So pricy though!

So sorry for your loss

Career advice/coaching sessions. I'm worried that the truth is that I'll never find a job I enjoy.

BeaLola · 12/05/2021 22:18

I love reading this post - it has given me sons great ideas

I am very lucky in that my lovely Dad gave me £500 a couple of years ago for a special birthday to spend on myself (& myself only were the instructions)

I still have it all - I haven't quite found the item yet - I have discounted jewellery or handbags as I have quite a few and wanted to buy something that made me think of my Dad ( he is luckily still with us)

I had thought of a painting - but not found the right thing just yet

I know though that I will know what it is when I see it

Shopgirl1 · 12/05/2021 22:30

Loewe handbag. Can’t bring myself to do it though.

Lookingoutside · 12/05/2021 22:33

Everyone do it!! Then let’s post pictures Grin

Nesski · 12/05/2021 22:37

@Lookingoutside of my breast lift? Grin

Lookingoutside · 12/05/2021 22:41

Maybe not exactly that 😂😂😂 but one of your happy smiling face post op?

JanuaryJonez · 13/05/2021 00:03

@Freshprincess my sister earns a fortune compared to me and was shocked that I'd bought some Sweaty Betty leggings, as she gets hers from H&M. She swears there is no difference.

Same with White Company sheets. Mine look like crumpled paper after washing, whereas hers look immaculate as they're cheap' poly-cotton!

Binkybix · 13/05/2021 01:35

So many things!

A diamond zig zag ring from Astley Clarke.

A swimming pool (we live somewhere hot)

Lulu lemon shorts

A painting I’ve wanted for ages (I didn’t buy one many years ago and is till regret it bitterly. I have a pic of it but can’t make out the artists name, and his work costs £££ now)

Dita73 · 13/05/2021 04:47

@Itwontstopraining if you have a thing about your nose then go for it. I had mine done when I was 21 and it’s the best thing I ever did. I’d been so self conscious about it since my teens and just always assumed it made me ugly. I was always covering my face with my hand. Don’t get me wrong,I’m no oil painting now but not having that worry anymore changed my life

Tupperwarelid · 13/05/2021 05:06

Ok so on reading this and with the help of a discount voucher I bought some sweaty Betty leggings. I’m not sure I can go back from here. They make my Sainsburys and Ron hill ones feel see through. They are so comfy and flattering and holding me in...

hesterstanhope · 13/05/2021 05:33
@lidoshuffle I like this idea! I have just transferred £50 to my frivolities pot Grin

I can never bring myself to spend out on every day clothes - like a pp said, dress for a party or wedding, happy to drop a couple of hundred. Jeans I will wear 1,000 times? I wince at over £50. WHY? My DH ends up buying quite a lot of my basic clothes (he has a fantastic eye) which is just a bit weird when you think about it and the money comes from our shared pot so it makes no difference.

I also cannot bring myself to pay full price, especially somewhere like whistles or white company where there are often discounts/ codes available but I end up waiting and either the thing goes out of stock or I end up buying something out of season and can't then wear it anyway - all to save £20.

All my beauty products are gifts. Pre Covid DH travelled a lot and would pick up make up and perfume for me in airports (he would have a list) somehow, someone else buying it is acceptable and I have no problem splashing out on gifts for other people. I have used up most of my stash over the past year and so buy supermarket brands because I can add them to my trolley and convince myself they are part of the food shop.
I stopped spending on occasion clothes and started spending on jeans, boots, white shirts and a gorgeous bag or two.

So much better once you can get your head around it!

beyouchair.com/

This fancy chair - but I've just bought it after this thread!
I've wanted it for over a year, I keep going back to stare at it online and nearly nearly get to checkout and then chicken out. But I must have gone to buy it a dozen times, so I clearly really want it. (I can be a bit impulse-spendy)

It moves and changes to however you like to sit, becomes a bed, becomes a straddle chair, becomes a desk chair etc etc.
I've got ADHD and cannot sit in a normal chair comfortably for long. I'm excited!

sapnupuas · 13/05/2021 09:42

Louboutins. I always said I'd buy some before I was 30 but I couldn't afford them. I could easily buy a pair now but I can't bring myself to spend the money.
