Is there something you want but just can’t bear to buy?

I’ve posted before about how I am a self confessed shopping addict. I’ve put myself on a semi ban, and I’m allowed to buy necessities for myself or replace makeup items that have ran out but I am not to buy things just because I want them. I have saved almost £1000 in a month, which is frightening! The big “f**k it” purchases (maybe £300) combined with impulsively buying makeup, a new top here and there, chocolate, extra luxuries in grocery shop REALLY mounted up. So last night (I had been drinking) I ALMOST fell into the trap and bought myself a very expensive pair of trainers. I didn’t give in and I still haven’t. The guilt of spoiling how well I’ve done and how much I’ve saved would stop me even enjoying them. I’ll just stick to admiring them from afar. Are there any items you lust after, and technically could afford, but just can’t justify buying?

  • I've kind of got the opposite problem.

After a lifetime of being hard up I now have a big fat nestegg, and yet there is nothing I want. I keep telling myself I can have anything I want, but I still end up buying things that are good value, for example I spent only £100 on a new mobile rather than getting one costing £1,000. And I still shopped around for a recent purchase costing £2,200, until I found a website selling the same item for £1,700. It's as though being frugal is so deeply embedded that I cannot rid myself of it.*

I've found this too. It's really strange, when you have plenty you just don't feel the urge or want for the stuff.

@feelinggeriatric have you looked at a ring doorbell or similar? They seem to be used a lot by police forces for footage after crimes, and aren't massively expensive? No expert though.

I've recently spent a lot of money - over £2000 - getting my downstairs professionally decorated. It's never been done professionally before and tbh hardly even done by me for 20 years. It is AMAZING. So now I want my bedroom completely done - electrics, plaster skim, fitted storage, paint. Am gathering quotes and I can probably afford it from savings but then I won't have the savings. It's hard to justify when there's just me to look at it but it's so tatty.

@CaveMum

I'd love to have a whole bunch of money that I could throw at a personal stylist and just ask them to totally kit out my wardrobe (everything from underwear upwards) with clothes, accessories and shoes that fit me well and look good on my body shape/with my colouring. I know there are shops that offer stylist appointments, but I don't want to constrained to only the brands on offer in one shop, or where the stylist gets extra commission.

I am sure such a a service exists, but it will cost £££££!

Emily from Style me Happy does this. She is amazing and can work with different budgets.

To the pps who want a tricycle - I am 36 and bought one last year as I have NO BALANCE and ir's amazing! No one points and laughs, it often gets oohed and ahhhed over and I love it. It is heavy to ride but that's just more of a workout (I sob as my thighs burn). Mine was £200 secondhand.

@2020nymph just looked her up, def wanna do that.

PattyPan · 10/05/2021 12:48

A Dualit toaster... I really want one, one of the elements has gone in our current (£10 Asda) toaster after two years so we do actually need a new one but everyone keeps telling to just buy another £10 one because it’s ridiculous to spend £150 on a toaster Sad

CaveMum · 10/05/2021 12:52

Ooooh thanks @2020nymph

Meruem · 10/05/2021 12:53

@beardeddragon174
That’s beautiful! And so much room for shopping or taking a picnic somewhere. Ok, that’s me convinced Grin

PattyPan · 10/05/2021 14:14

Just read through the rest of the thread. To everyone who wants a kitchen aid I would second the recommendation to get a kenwood instead. I bought myself a beautiful cream kenwood chef recently and love it. They’re a fair bit cheaper than kitchen aids and also have more optional attachments so are more flexible/useful IMO.

MiddleParking · 10/05/2021 14:39

I’ve got a dualit toaster and if it does anything a £10 Asda one doesn’t then it’s never told me about it. We also have a dualit kettle (ditto) and a dualit milk frother (now that was worth buying). The kettle at least looks quite nice, the toaster doesn’t really.

PattyPan · 10/05/2021 15:14

@MiddleParking doesn’t yours have a bagel setting? I’ve not found a cheap toaster that does (suggestions very welcome!). I also really like how the classic dualit toasters are repairable unlike my Asda one which is just going to be landfill Sad

Elbels · 10/05/2021 15:16

I'd like laser eye surgery and have the money but know that I'm never going to book it.

I'm also amazed, as someone who rode for years but never had her own horse, that I could go out tomorrow and buy one and afford to keep it without thinking about it. Also never going to do that but it's nice to know it would be possible!

MiddleParking · 10/05/2021 15:52

Oh yeah, it does actually. Sorry pp!

That's so damn cute. I want one but I have nowhere to store one and absolutely no reason to have one. Still I'm now lusting after a trike, never thought I'd say that.

A tummy tuck.
I've got a proper gunt going on, but I can't justify the cost.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 10/05/2021 16:30

Rhubarb. Raspberries. Strawberries. Gooseberries. Apples. Edible flowers.

We used to grow all these (and more) when I was a child. I love rhubarb and blackberries but they are so expensive in the shops! I was brought up just picking them for free.

DH thinks I’m mad.

@Lucybarker

I bought it!!! It’s amazing I love it, you need to get it!
Oh dear. I’ve been fighting the urge to buy it..
therocinante · 10/05/2021 17:01

There's a perfume I love (Penhaligon's Juniper Sling) that I just can't justify buying. I don't need it, it's not an essential at all... but whenever I get an invoice paid and it's a big one, I go to the website and look at it for a bit before closing the tab!

EKGEMS · 10/05/2021 17:10

I have the Kitchenaid stand mixer and use it so much I've replaced two of the attachments from wear. Just a couple months ago I ordered a shredder/slicer attachment and use it on veggies and blocks of cheese-was very reasonable.

lindyloo57 · 10/05/2021 17:23

Get your self the GHDs they are great, I treated myself to the wider ones too.

Fightingon · 10/05/2021 17:27

@thenightsky

I see someone has already mentioned my lustful thing... Dubarry boots.

I'd also add, two implant teeth so I can smile widely again.
Botox and/or fillers so I don't look so fucking miserable.
Bose sleep buds to drown out DH's snoring.

Implant teeth are the best thing I’ve done in a long time even with the cost it’s worth it
Letsrunabath · 10/05/2021 17:27

Patty pan we have just had to replace our toaster that lives in the cupboard we bought a cheap Russell Hobbs, it’s amazing and way faster than our very old dualit.
I do have dubarry boots and cost per wear are likely the best value item I’ve ever owned.
Kitchen aid stand mix brilliant but my Kitchen aid food processor and coffee maker both died just as they went out of warranty.

Oh, for goodness sake buy it. You’re a long time dead and shrouds don’t have pockets!
