Is there something you want but just can’t bear to buy?

I’ve posted before about how I am a self confessed shopping addict. I’ve put myself on a semi ban, and I’m allowed to buy necessities for myself or replace makeup items that have ran out but I am not to buy things just because I want them. I have saved almost £1000 in a month, which is frightening! The big “f**k it” purchases (maybe £300) combined with impulsively buying makeup, a new top here and there, chocolate, extra luxuries in grocery shop REALLY mounted up. So last night (I had been drinking) I ALMOST fell into the trap and bought myself a very expensive pair of trainers. I didn’t give in and I still haven’t. The guilt of spoiling how well I’ve done and how much I’ve saved would stop me even enjoying them. I’ll just stick to admiring them from afar. Are there any items you lust after, and technically could afford, but just can’t justify buying?

Yarn from hobbii and some scheepjes whirls.

And a new phone because the screen on mine is broken but I cant justify a new one, and I could get the screen fixed for the cost of a new one

This dress from Zimmermann. It probably won’t suit me as I’m not skinny and 6 foot tall, but I just can’t stop looking at it. I have loads of dresses that I’ve bought over the last year and have yet to wear / find a reason to wear them all at.

Is there something you want but just can’t bear to buy?

Foodie ninja all in one thingie. Because they are huge and expensive

Hettylala · 09/05/2021 18:13

A Dyson hairdryer. Had my hair done this week and the stylist used one. My hair has never been so shiny or bouncy. I've lusted after one for the last three days but I cannot justify £300 on a hairdryer. I do REALLY want it though!

Nightbear · 09/05/2021 18:21

I have a dyson hairdryer and though I’m pleased with it I can’t say that it makes my hair any bouncier/shinier. I think you may need the stylist and the hairdryer to get that.

@KickBishopBrennanUpTheArse

A Philips lumea.

It's such a lot of money to spend when it might not work.

I have one, they definitely do work.
MilduraS · 09/05/2021 18:41

I'd like to treat myself to a mid-range handbag to replace the £30 handbag I bought in Sainsbury's 3 years ago. I could afford it and it would probably last much longer but I'm a habitual saver and can't bring myself to dip into my savings.

whippitwoowoo · 09/05/2021 18:45

@SinkGirl
Buy the MacBook Air

I did 4 years ago when I lost my job and went back to college to retrain

It hasn’t failed me once. I absolutely love it.
I watch videos whilst I’m cooking.
Write assignments with ease.
Use it for seeing clients on Zoom.

It’s so easy and user friendly.

I’d love to upgrade it but there’s nothing wrong with it.

Kitchen aid mixer - I can afford it but can’t bring myself to buy it

sansou · 09/05/2021 18:59

Vi-spring bed after looking/trying some a long time ago. Could never justify the cost but starting to feel why the heck not.

HelgaHybrid · 09/05/2021 19:07

@Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel if you’re in Surrey/London, please could you share details of where you have Botox? I’ve found somewhere, but would much prefer a recommendation if you have one please. Thanks 😊

I’m not sure what else I want. I’ve just had microblading (amazing) and teeth whitening (trays from dentist, which I really impressed with). Not really stuff, probably more beauty at the mo, as I’ve lost my extra 3 stone of baby weight over lockdown. Planning to emerge as a butterfly 😂

mermaidsariel · 09/05/2021 19:09

Super king size bed

CallMeCleo · 09/05/2021 19:11

I've kind of got the opposite problem.

After a lifetime of being hard up I now have a big fat nestegg, and yet there is nothing I want. I keep telling myself I can have anything I want, but I still end up buying things that are good value, for example I spent only £100 on a new mobile rather than getting one costing £1,000. And I still shopped around for a recent purchase costing £2,200, until I found a website selling the same item for £1,700. It's as though being frugal is so deeply embedded that I cannot rid myself of it.

So worth it. Ours is one of the cheaper ones but still cost us more than we have spent on all other furniture put together, in 14 years of marriage! But 100% worth it.
mermaidsariel · 09/05/2021 19:31

Any particular mattress?

LoveFall · 09/05/2021 19:32

A die cutting machine that doesn't require hand cranking. There are some with electric motors. They are over priced in my opinion but I really want one as hand cranking hurts my arthritic thumb. I love making cards and use the dies to cut paper shapes.

sansou · 09/05/2021 19:35

Tempting

Blossomandbee · 09/05/2021 19:37

@Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel does it always work? I've heard of it not taking on some people for various reasons and they don't refund you if it doesn't.
I would really really love to have it, it just feels like such a splurge on a personal cosmetic thing. I know it would do my confidence wonders though.

marmitecake · 09/05/2021 19:47

Possibly very weird but I want the 2021 Whitaker's Almanac, a big fat box full of interesting facts (have got the 2010 one). I'm not a reader at all, but can bury my head in it for ages. It's £125 Shock

CHILLLADIES · 09/05/2021 19:47

A large fake orchid, a house near us has one in the window and I thought I would pay £50 for that. Saw the same one in a catalogue the other day -£650. For fake flowers! That was when I realised my shopping addiction had turned to madness.

windysocks · 09/05/2021 19:53

A greenhouse

Anotherlovelybitofsquirrel · 09/05/2021 19:54

@Blossomandbee I've got lots of friends that have it, none have ever had issues. Not heard of anyone it didn't work on. I had deep lines on my forehead, bridge of my nose and around my eyes. Not any more! But you need to be careful where you get it done

HelgaHybrid · 09/05/2021 19:58

@CHILLLADIES look at Bloom. They usually have a 10-15% discount code every few months. Their artificial flowers are fabulous. Expensive, but I’ve had my recent bunch over 7 years and they still look new. I think I paid £200 something for the big ones

KikiniBamalam · 09/05/2021 19:58

@Cabernetto

Rachel Simpson shoes for my wedding. £230. Could afford it, just can't justify it.
I had them for my wedding, absolute works of art. So, so beautiful
NameChangeforMoneyThings · 09/05/2021 20:08

@Iminaglasscaseofemotion

Oh actually I thought of one. Kitchen knifes. I can not bring myself to buy expensive good ones. I just keep struggling on with the same shitty blunt ones.
Have you tried TK Maxx for kitchen knives? I have had really good Chrome Molybdenum ones that are Sabatier, usually Richardson Sheffield I think and really lovely and sharpen well and usually under a tenner, maybe £5-6 for a smallish one. They're super.
