I’ve posted before about how I am a self confessed shopping addict. I’ve put myself on a semi ban, and I’m allowed to buy necessities for myself or replace makeup items that have ran out but I am not to buy things just because I want them. I have saved almost £1000 in a month, which is frightening! The big “f**k it” purchases (maybe £300) combined with impulsively buying makeup, a new top here and there, chocolate, extra luxuries in grocery shop REALLY mounted up. So last night (I had been drinking) I ALMOST fell into the trap and bought myself a very expensive pair of trainers. I didn’t give in and I still haven’t. The guilt of spoiling how well I’ve done and how much I’ve saved would stop me even enjoying them. I’ll just stick to admiring them from afar. Are there any items you lust after, and technically could afford, but just can’t justify buying?

Getting the tiling in the utility redone. It was done really badly (I couldn’t check it properly at the time for various reasons) and it annoys me every time I see it, but can’t quite justify ripping it out and getting it all re done. It’s only been in a few months.

Laser eye surgery. I have very short sight and am telling myself the longer I hold off the more chance of a good, lasting result. Of course though, the longer I hold off, the fewer years I’ll get the benefit...

Botox, fillers, microblading etc. It’s so expensive for something that wears off.

Rachel Simpson shoes for my wedding. £230. Could afford it, just can't justify it.

Bedtimeforever · 09/05/2021 17:28

A Gucci changing bag. Due in 8 weeks and no changing bag yet because if I don’t have the Gucci one I don’t want one. But at the same time I can’t bring myself to spend nearly £900 for my child's nappies and bottle...

FlyingNorth · 09/05/2021 17:35

DS & Durga Debaser. I can technically afford £150 for 50ml of perfume but I just can't do it.

Completedworks earrings, maybe these:

I'm also seriously tempted to get a trike.

stalachtiteorstalagmite · 09/05/2021 17:35

A Mulberry Alexa. I don't even think they're that fashionable any more but I love them and always will. I could never justify the expense now though. Any spare cash I have goes on treats for my DD.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 09/05/2021 17:37

Seen a t-shirt l can't stop thinking about but it is £30 - can totally afford it but think that is a lot for a tshirt!

Daisy829 · 09/05/2021 17:41

@stalachtiteorstalagmite mulberry have just rereleased the alexa so they are definitely still fashionable. They are really pricey brand new though. You can get them for around £300 second hand in decent condition.

FlyingNorth · 09/05/2021 17:42

I forgot, I would also love one of these, preferably one of the baroque pearl ones that look like melting ice-cream.

Security cameras for outside due to drug dealing scum neighbour. But can't bring myself to spend that much on something so dull

Askinvillarblues · 09/05/2021 17:45

@MagicSummer I do, I have the mini in navy, and the larger size in navy/tan (was limited edition last year). I may have just ordered the navy/grey version in both sizes - just to see, obviously. I definitely won’t be keeping both 😬🙈. I love bags and have a few from Aspinal, Coach, Tory Burch and one Mulberry from back when prices weren’t extortionate, but I have to say the Fairfax ones are my favourites and the ones I use most.

CaveMum · 09/05/2021 17:45

Another one lusting after Dubarry boots!

I also am in love with this Fairfax & Favor backpack: www.fairfaxandfavor.com/collections/bags/products/the-loxley-backpack-tan-navy?variant=27864364286024

I've wanted some GHDs for years and years and have never been able to warrant treating myself when my £30 straighteners I've had since I was a teenager still work.

" I don't think the newer ones are worth it as they're not built to last. I purchased mine for around £100 back in 2004 and they're still going strong. Really, really good investment for me "

Mine are from 2004 too! Still going strong! They're bright pink! Had to go round loads of different hairdressers to find a set when I was 16! Smile

Bought my GHD's in 2007 and they are still going strong . £100 well spent , my both daughters use it too 😊
Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2021 17:50

I know @lachy I keep looking and wondering maybe just a new strap for my existing bags, but then find they've brought out a new colour or size and they look soooo nice.

Oh that is on my wish list too. It’s so pretty! Apparently it fits three bottles of wine too... handy to know 🤣

Thewiseoneincognito · 09/05/2021 17:52

I used to be like you OP, literally throwing money away on stuff I thought would bring me happiness. A year into Covidworld and realising how stuff is meaningless in the bigger picture, my bank balance looks fantastic. Keep up your good work, you’ll get to a point when you’d rather have the money than the thing.

Umbongoumbongo999 · 09/05/2021 17:52

I have also got a little pocket money fund for my own luxuries. We have been ok money wise for some time now, however it felt every one else (dh and 2 teen dcs) got the good stuff, and that I never prioritised myself and was wearing supermarket clothes etc.

So now, budget depending, dh and I 'give' ourselves pocket money each month of £50-200 to spend on whatever. I use YNAB so other non essential spends are covered separately such as holidays, gym, home improvements and savings.

Inspired by this thread I've had a look back through recent months of my pocket money spends. I have bought really nice candles a few times (I love skandinavisk candles and they last for ages). I have also bought really nice VS underwear, plus make up, perfume, books for my kindle and treats for my DSis and nephews (not birthdays, 'just because'.

Today I have bought some Giesswein slippers (based on a MN recommendation) and a yoga mat.

Setting up this system has been like giving myself permission. Also dh can spend his money on golf and cycling shit and betting on big football matches (which I used to really resent) and this has taken the pressure right off. It's his money and when it's gone it's gone. I tend to hold onto mine and thoroughly research purchase before I buy.

I worked the election last week so will get a nice little payslip from that. I'm going to treat myself.
CaveMum · 09/05/2021 17:53

@Askinvillarblues perfect for every picnic then 🤣🤣🤣

Sparklingbrook · 09/05/2021 17:55

Lovely @lachy but which to choose? Grin You do get a strap the colour of the handbag, but I think the patterned ones are what make them really.

OK I'm convinced I want one now! I will use your 10% code if I may? I love bags too - have some Coach, Kate Spade and Fossil, but this feels like a step up! Thanks for your advice and the code.

Meruem · 09/05/2021 17:57

I love handbags so this thread has been fatal! I had one thing on my list when the thread started and it’s grown to about 5!

I do like the idea of putting aside £50 a month for “splurge” purchases. I’m happy to spend money on the house or going on holiday but rarely splash out on anything purely frivolous.
