To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

Irishterrier · 06/05/2021 18:18

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

I have two potential holidays this summer/autumn - one at the far end of Scotland and one in Italy. At the moment I don't know if I'll get to go to Scotland as there are lots of us, mainly single, in a large house and no-one can yet advise how many "households" will be allowed to share one house by that point. I also don't know if I can go to Italy, but its not until September. I'm not entirely sure if driving up and down to Scotland, staying over en-route, and then being with, say, 20 other people, is going to be less "risky" than flying to Italy, being alone in a studio apartment, and mooching around a city or two. I think we're in danger of thinking foreign = dangerous, when it isn't necessarily so!

Notmoresugar · 07/05/2021 19:41

YANBU - nothing wrong with being cautious until we know how the virus it is going to pan-out in other countries. Nobody in the UK wants another lock-down when we've come so far.

Notimeforaname · 07/05/2021 19:49

I cant wait to go away. It's all I'm living for at the moment 🤣

smilingontheinside · 07/05/2021 19:49

Why selfish to want to visit and check the property you have invested hard earned savings in? Autumn 2019 was last time we were able to get to our property and anything could have happened to it since then. It was purchased to give us somewhere to go to for time away from work and other stresses and to relax. I personally cannot wait to sit on the terrace watching the sea with a cold drink and some tapas. Yep call me selfish I really don't care I've worked hard for over 40 years to have this dream🙄

I do understand why you would wish to go but most people work hard, so this is not a reason why you 'deserve' to do something or not.

Plenty of people work hard and die, or work hard and lose their job, or work hard and never make enough to buy a holiday home in the first place.

You’ll be flamed for this because everyone has their own perspective as to how they’ve been impacted this last year and what they do and don’t deserve. Long gone are the days in March-May 2020 when we collectively grouped for the better good of everyone. Atm the country is in far better place than ever. The reopening of international travel will put that to the test. It remains to be seen whether it will go so far as to impact on Autumn / Winter lockdowns due to variants that enter the country bypassing the hard work done on vaccines. Testing & quarantine should limit the harm so much more than last years summer travellers. Fingers crossed.

@RuleWithAWoodenFoot

I think now is not the time time go abroad to largely unvaccinated countries.

I'm not going to go abroad to a largely unvaccinated country. We'll be vaccinated, we'll get in our car, drive to a sunnier place, comply with all local covid rules, then come home. Just as risky as going to Cornwall, but sunnier.

Which country are you going to that is not 'largely unvaccinated'? Israel, Bahrain?

Almost anywhere is higher risk than Cornwall now due to the high vaccination rate in the UK, your own vaccination status does not change that scientific reality.

For anyone looking for a sunny getaway I would highly recommend a long weekend in Tel Aviv. Such amazing food. I would go back for the food alone.

mermaidsariel · 07/05/2021 20:34

@bossyrossy

It’s selfish because you are only thinking of your own pleasure and not the well-being of your fellow countrymen/women. No doubt we will all be in lockdown again come the autumn when all the variants the holiday makers have brought back cause the Covid death rate to once again rise. I may be a pessimist but I hope I’m proved wrong.
You sound like a real barrel of laughs.

How is it in price, say, for a family of 4?

I couldn't care less if your irritated or not.

Whatamess582 · 07/05/2021 21:34

Selfish is a relative term.

I live in Provence. We had almost no UK variant in France pre-Christmas and then the British expat community decided to descend on the UK just as the whole SE went into level four lockdown and did their 14 days quarantine in England over Christmas as no one could go anywhere and they were all staying with family. 3/4 weeks later we had more than 4 times the national average of the UK variant here. It was British exceptionalism at its best. ‘I want to see my family, so I will go see my family’. So I can understand why the OP thinks it’s selfish to want to go abroad. It is if it means you are likely to get infected and spread the virus and potentially pick up and spread variants that could potentially be less affected by vaccines.

That said, hopefully a good majority of France will have been vaccinated by mid June early July... (finger crossed the J&J starts rollout so we will be fully vaccinated with 1 jab). I have my AZ app on Tuesday. Our area of France is absolutely desperate for tourists and we will not mind one jot if all you vaccinated British people descend on us for holidays, if you can. We need your money. PLEASE COME TO THE SOUTH OF FRANCE AND SPEND YOUR MONEY. The government delayed our 3rd lockdown so that we could host a summer here. in our minds not coming would be selfish.

Picturesandpickles I have worked non stop for over 50 years, lost both my parents within weeks of each other and split from my husband of over 40 years and went for years without any holidays UK or otherwise as never had enough money. I'm well aware other people work hard and don't have a place abroad doesn't mean that I should not now be able to enjoy what I have. There's a lot of people with a lot more than me and a lot of people with less than me as it's always going to be.

The point I am trying to make is those things are not relevant to the question really, I will not list all my work, or losses, or sacrifices. Whether mine are greater or fewer than yours, my view is foreign travel is unwise this year for the good of the whole country.
picturesandpickles · 07/05/2021 21:46

Should have added Flowers for the loss of your parents

mermaidsariel · 07/05/2021 21:54

The thing is it’s up to the govt to decide what is or isn’t sensible. If we are allowed to travel, we can travel. That’s not being selfish.

LauraPearl · 07/05/2021 21:55

If it's legal, and people are prepared to do all that is required of them (PCR tests, quarantine if needed, wear masks when needed etc), then why the Hell shouldn't they go? Our family have decided to holiday in the UK again this year, because I don't want to jump through all the hoops needed for foreign travel at the mo, but I don't begrudge others getting their bit of sun

lazylinguist · 07/05/2021 22:01

my view is foreign travel is unwise this year for the good of the whole country.

Do you somehow have access to better, more accurate information than the rest of us? Or than the government? And when you talk about 'the good of the whole country', are you ignoring the situation of people whose livelihoods depend on people going out, spending money and travelling?

People can do what they are allowed to do. Expecting people to ignore the relaxing of restrictions after such a long period of not being able to do stuff is frankly ridiculous and unreasonable.

Exactly
TinselTinsel · 07/05/2021 22:07

@Finfintytint

I understand why people are wanting to get away. It’s not for me this year. I couldn’t be arsed with restrictions, testing, possible quarantine, etc. That’s not relaxing enough for me but if people want to put themselves through that, then fine, crack on.
^ This! I fully understand anybody wanting a lovely hot relaxing sunny beach but as @Finfintytint says, I couldn't be doing with all of the quarantine and the possibility of holidays being cancelled last minute so staycation for me this year, I just pray we get some sun pleeeaasseeeee! I'm not cut out for the cold weather pfft!
helpIhateclothesshopping · 07/05/2021 22:24

I'm more annoyed by the concept of a holiday in this country being considered a "staycation" - as if it's not a proper holiday. I think it makes people expect that they should be going abroad and gives people unreasonable expectations. Our first holiday abroad as a family (apart from a day trip to France) was when I was 17, before that it was school trips and Scout camp abroad and camping holidays or visiting family in this country. The media are fueling people's unreasonable expectations.

I'm not expecting anyone to ignore the relaxing of restrictions, if they're allowed they're allowed, but last time I checked we lived in a country where people are allowed to hold different views.

You're not necessarily the world's leading authority on everything either.

My view is the risk of variants in May is an issue that might have changed by July, due to vaccine rollout.
