To be irritated by people wanting a foreign holiday this summer?

Irishterrier · 06/05/2021 18:18

I know some people have family abroad and that is different.

However I know several people who either have second homes abroad or just fancy some sun, and I feel annoyed by them agitating about wanting to go abroad this summer.

AIBU to think they're being selfish?

Unless you are planning on going to the Falklands then I guess it’s a non question. Most holidays will be cancelled. Spain, France, Italy will definitely be off. I’ve heard Greece may not make it to. So start planning a uk getaway now before they get fully booked!

They're going to be reviewing again shortly, I'd be really surprised if France and Spain weren't do-able by June at some point.
Or people can just go and opt to do the at-home quarantine.

GabsAlot · 08/05/2021 10:20

i just wont be paying for 2 maybe more tests plus the holiday cant really afford it

stitchinguru · 08/05/2021 10:24

Yes - I totally agree with OP.
Reason being, this pandemic has absolutely crippled some of us financially. Sorry some of you are lucky enough to still be able to afford a holiday and can’t, but people are losing their homes, struggling to pay bills and feed their families! For those of us in such a position, it’s difficult to feel sympathy for those who ‘have got to have some sun’...

Bushgirl · 08/05/2021 10:32

Why is it selfish to want to go on a foreign holiday after over a year of having to stay in this overpriced racist laughing stock of a country we have to stay in. I won't break rules but the sooner I can leave this miserable place for a couple of weeks the better.

For me it's not about the sun. That's a bonus. We all have our own reasons and I have worked extra to be able to afford a holiday.

I'm truly sorry to people who have lost their homes but everyone has different luck and people who want to go abroad shouldn't be made to feel guilty for doing so LEGALLY.

Fizbosshoes · 08/05/2021 10:40

Or people can just go and opt to do the at-home quarantine.

I think holidays will be another area which will widen the economic divide.
I live in a fairly affluent town where most people are in law/corporate jobs/financial services and a lot of scope to wfh. The station carpark (which in previous years there was a campaign to make multi-storey) is virtually deserted. It's normal for people to have multiple foreign holidays a year. Last year I imagine a large % of people here will have saved an absolute fortune from wfh, not going to eat out, not going to concerts and shows, and not going on 3 or 4 holidays. These are the customers that will happily pay for extra covid tests at whatever price, and be able to isolate (and work) at home for 10 days.
For others who's job is not doable from home, probably in lower paid jobs, or for whom a foreign holiday is a luxury , will be more affected by the prospect of extra covid tests or the necessity to quarantine.

Coasterfan · 08/05/2021 10:55

Personally I can’t be arsed with the hassle and the worry about things changing while we are away and having to quarantine etc so we will just be holidaying in the U.K. this year, and going abroad again when things are normal. I can’t get wound up about other people wanting to go abroad, each to their own.

GiveMeTulipsfromAmsterdam · 08/05/2021 10:57

There is a big divide though now. Many saved lots of money whilst working from home and now want to go on holiday...so what. There is always a divide in wealth and suddenly people affected with lower income expect people to care. People didn't care before, why shouldn't people holiday just because some cannot afford it

JackieWeaverHandforthCouncil · 08/05/2021 11:10

So people shouldn’t go on holiday because some people have lost their homes? I feel very sorry for those people but I don’t think that’s a valid argument anymore than people shouldn’t go out to eat because some people in the world don’t have enough food.

There’s always someone worse off, that doesn’t mean we should all eat dry bread, only drink water and cram our families into studio apartments with no entertainment in solidarity.

I could even argue that even more people will struggle to feed their families (those working in tourism) if everyone decided to never go away again because some people are poorer.

Rubbish!

If you are able to quarantine when you get back there's no reason you can't go to these places.

MaxNormal · 08/05/2021 11:25

Unfortunately yes. If you factor in ability to isolate for ten days by working from home, plus the costs of all the PCR tests, it's definitely going to exclude people on tighter budgets.

Fizbosshoes · 08/05/2021 11:32

I'm not saying people who can afford to go on holiday shouldnt go (arguably we need the people who have saved during the last year to spend and stimulate the economy)...but that it does highlight a wealth divide. The divide will always be there, of course, but in terms of holidays, the budget easy jet holiday that was previously accessible to the masses will probably not be feasible for as many people, if they add on the cost of covid tests and self isolating.

Pastanred · 08/05/2021 11:34

No idea why people think holidays won’t happen given they happened last year and we are in hugely better place now!

For green countries who don’t require a test for vaccinated tourists (many are saying vaccinated people can enter freely) then it’s only £20 pp with tui for a pre return flight lft and a pcr on 2ndday back

So £80 for family of four which makes it pretty accessible

People thinking Spain and Greece etc won’t have is in have their heads in the clouds! all adults in uk be vaccinated by July - we went last year with no vaccines

stitchinguru · 08/05/2021 11:35

Exactly that....
And judging by the ‘I’m alright Jack’ comments on here, we are definitely NOT all in this together. The poor didn’t ask to be clobbered further by a global pandemic! It’s a smack in the face to continue to hear how those lucky enough to keep their jobs, working from home and saving money want to go on a foreign holiday!
The virus doesn’t differentiate though so those wanting to take unnecessary risks because they can, could potentially escalate the situation for ALL...

Plenty of people working in the travel industry or in jobs associated with large parts of the travel industry will be losing lose their homes and struggling in all the ways you mention if overseas travel, including holidays, doesn't pick up PDQ.

Don't know the prices now but Israel's open, not just the Falklands; we did a long weekend in Tel Aviv 3 years ago that was incredible, not too expensive and the food was amazing.

But surely those who can afford it should support the travel industry (if they want to, of course). I feel no guilt at having two holidays booked for this year and if I can go, I will.
Allwokedup · 08/05/2021 14:14

It’s been really hard for everyone. You’re being a bit closed minded. People just want normal life back. New normal doesn’t cut it.

That's a ridiculous comment. We have a holiday to Greece booked and we are planning to go and just do the 10 day quarantine when we get home. I'm pretty sure there will be 100s of other people like us.

We are booked with an independent small hotel who has already confirmed with us that they are looking forward to seeing us. The only thing that will stop us going will be if the flight doesn't go (it's still selling seats at the moment so fingers crossed!) :)

Bul21ia · 08/05/2021 14:34

Eurgghhh wind your neck in OP!!

A lot of people won’t be going away anyway. With the prices of PCR tests and the potential last minute changes also there’s not many places on the green list!.

loginfail · 08/05/2021 14:48

@osbertthesyrianhamster

Don't know the prices now but Israel's open,

But with (I think) major restrictions still in place.

i think that now more than ever, we need to support our country by holidaying in this country, i know that weather cant always be relied on but , lets just do it , there are some beautiful places to explore

bemusedmoose · 08/05/2021 16:30

Everyone wants a holiday, but during a pandemic taking one is insane. Just because they say you can doesn't mean you should. We'll just end up in another bloody lockdown with more variants.

They shouldn't be allowed until everyone is vaccinated or this has died out.

Being alone with 2 kids and no one else since all this began has been tough, highs and lows. I am exhausted. I would love nothing more to have some fun in the sun. But not in a pandemic.

99victoria · 08/05/2021 16:55

Well, that's your choice @bemusedmoose
Others are free to make a different choice within the law and their own tolerance to risk

I agree that we need to support the UK, but the UK vacation industry cannot provide for everyone who would otherwise have gone abroad. I understand it is nigh on impossible to find family sized accommodation for school holidays in the UK at the moment.
