I don't get it. Its depressing. We deserve better than this surely? Why give them the green light? What kind of society do we want? One where liars get our approval?

Boris Johnson swooned over the "totty" at Labour's 1996 conference during his time as a journalist - in an article later unearthed by Business Insider

He claimed the "tottymeter reading" was "higher than at any Labour Party conference in living memory" because "fickle" women were attracted by the "whiff of power"

With barely-concealed sexual innuendo he added: "Time and again the 'Tottymeter' has gone off as a young woman delegate mounts the rostrum."

MarshaBradyo · 05/05/2021 23:17

Green I agree on that. Opposition in a pandemic is hard and Starmer could improve party and his own position for election, I hope he does (although he annoyed me v much Will a careless remark at one point).

After the last Election many in the Labour Party blamed the electorate for a lack of understanding and thought the answer was to be even more Corbyn.
That idea was defeated and they elected KS

StoneofDestiny · 05/05/2021 23:20

Johnson boasted of patting a colleague on the behind in his 2005 farewell piece as editor of the Spectator magazine.

"Once the fire is going well, you may find your eyes drifting to the lovely striped chesterfield across the room," he wrote in a letter to his successor.

"Is it the right size, you wonder, for a snooze…? You come round in a panic, to find a lustrous pair of black eyes staring down at you.

"Relax. It’s only Kimberly, with some helpful suggestions for boosting circulation. Just pat her on the bottom and send her on her way."

@UrAWizHarry

The idea that the tories give a tiny fuck about women is one of the biggest jokes of modern times. Just take a look at the fucking arseholes on the front bench and what they think about women.
Priti Patel and (especially) Victoria Atkins got the Domestic Abuse Bill made law last week, providing protection for women and girls across the country from post separation coercive control, revenge porn threats, further abuse in court, recognised children as victims of domestic violence in their own right, put Claire's Law on a statutory footing, created a legal defintion for all types of domestic abuse, required priority rehousing for domestic abuse victims, and more.

John McDonnell then had a bitter, ranting, whinge about it rather than introduce his own legislation to get the outcomes he sought. No, he wanted to prevent these protections from going ahead now, to cut off other people's noses, to spite other people's faces.

Meanwhile, the local Labour police commissioner candidate wants to work for "all women". Aye, right you are, no specifics as to what that means, naturally.

This is why people don't vote Labour.

StoneofDestiny · 05/05/2021 23:25

Johnson is quoted as saying in the 2010 general election: "Voting Tory will cause your wife to have bigger breasts and increase your chances of owning a BMW M3."

When Johnson was London mayor in 2013 when he prompted uproar by saying women go to university to find a husband. He made the comments at the launch of the World Islamic Economic Forum in front of Najib Razak, the Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Mr Razak said: "Before coming here my officials have told me that the latest university intake in Malaysia, a Muslim country, 68 per cent will be women entering our universities." Johnson replied: "They’ve got to find men to marry."

@NotFrozen

Just stop. I keep seeing posts like this being added as new threads. Is this coming from Labour HQ?
Oh do get a grip dear 🙄
StoneofDestiny · 05/05/2021 23:28

In 2018 Johnson was given a telling off by the Commons speaker for "sexist" remarks about Emily Thornberry. He referred to his Labour opposite number Emily Thornberry as "Baroness Nugee", a reference to her husband's title.

Speaker John Bercow told him at the time of the row: "We do not address people by the titles of their spouses. The Shadow Foreign Secretary has a name. And it's not 'Lady something'. We know what her name is. And it is inappropriate and, frankly, sexist to speak in those terms."

Johnson later made a grovelling apology

StoneofDestiny · 05/05/2021 23:30

In August 2018 he branded Muslim face veils “oppressive”, “weird and bullying” and said it was “absolutely ridiculous that people should choose to go around looking like letterboxes."

StoneofDestiny · 05/05/2021 23:33

Boris Johnson called David Cameron a 'girly swot' in leaked cabinet papers in 2019.

The comment was directed at a man but mocking women when he made it during a legal row over proroguing parliament.

"The whole September session is a rigmarole induced by girly swot Cameron.

Blackberrycream · 05/05/2021 23:37

What is your view on the treatment of Luciana Berger and the mass exodus of Jewish members @StoneofDestiny?
Johnson has indeed made racist statements. On the other hand there doesn’t seem to have been mass bullying and exclusion of people from certain ethnicities within the party.
Tough choices indeed.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind · 05/05/2021 23:37

@StoneofDestiny all of these quotes that you are posting are well known. We all know that Johnson is a vile, misogynistic piece of dirt- I say it again- what the hell does that tell you, when feminists will choose to vote Tory- because they feel that a disgusting misogynist will protect women's rights better than Labour? Do you not see how labour have betrayed women massively?

Your fond of quotes- this is from the guardian on what the women of labour want to do for women:

Rebecca Long-Bailey, Angela Rayner and Dawn Butler have backed a new trans rights charter that calls on Labour to expel “transphobic” members and describes campaigns including Woman’s Place UK as “trans-exclusionist hate groups”.

Women's Place. A hate group? For being concerned about women's rights and safe spaces?

DdraigGoch · 05/05/2021 23:37

@frumpety

Well if decades of voting Labour never brought milk and honey for these deprived communities, can you blame them for looking elsewhere?

No, but if the milk and honey still doesn't appear after a decade of a Conservative government, you would imagine that people would join the dots and realise that the Conservative government doesn't care too deeply about their plight.

I was on minimum wage, zero-hours contracts for several years under this government. The introduction of the NLW and the raising of the Personal Allowance directly benefitted me. Pre-pandemic, employment had reached record highs too.
Happymum12345 · 05/05/2021 23:42

People are extremely quick to forget all that the conservatives have done. Of course no party is perfect, but they are the absolute worse.

babyinthacorner · 05/05/2021 23:46

@Crankley
‘So pleased to see Labour bots working hard. They've got nothing else to do since the chance of Labour winning an election are vanishingly small, fortunately.’

Like the Tory bots all over Keir Starmer’s fb posts Hmm

Zeldaaa · 05/05/2021 23:46

@19lottie82

I live in Scotland and a lot of people will vote for them to try and keep out the SNP. I’m voting labour to do the same in my constituency, but would both Tory over SNP, without a shadow of a doubt.
This. I will be voting conservative for this reason.
Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 05/05/2021 23:52

Labour Campaign for Trans Rights issued a contentious series of pledges — contentious for a number of reasons:

  1. They define “transphobia” as dissent with ‘gender identity ideology’.
  2. They slander Womans Place UK — a grassroots group campaigning for female sex-based rights, and LGB Alliance — who campaign for homosexual/bisexual rights, as “transphobic hate groups”.
  3. They call for the expulsion from the Labour Party of all dissenters.

They will distroy sex based rights.

ajs8 · 05/05/2021 23:52

Jesus?! Wokeness right there in your ridiculous comment. We live in a democracy and we can vote for whoever we wish. I personally think that Boris has done the best he could given the circumstances and I dread to think what would’ve happened through this pandemic if we had anyone else in government. There seems to be a pattern in government where labour gets in and ruins our country and then the conservatives have to come and sort it out!

Mittens030869 · 05/05/2021 23:54

**StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind
I hate them too, I could never vote for them, they are an absolute shower of shite and the worst government in living memory, my mum in her 60s says the same.

So what does that say about the opposition? That an incompetent government full of liars looks a better option? We have had years of the tories now, wtf have labour been doing in that time? Labour have been absolutely fucking useless since Corbyn, I had hopes for Starmer but other than being reasonable at PMQs (which you'd expect from a lawyer), what has he done? I have no idea what labour's policies actually are. I don't know what they stand for anymore and I don't think Starmer and the idiots who surround him do either.

I've always voted labour but until they can tell me what a woman is they won't be getting a vote from me. I totally understand women on here who will vote Tory because ironically they seem to be the only party who have any concept of women's rights, who thought anyone would ever write that sentence?! I can't vote Tory myself but I get it.

I'm furious at labour, they have been so crap for so long that a fucking clown like Boris has appeared to be a better option to many people. Labour are a huge reason as to why we have such a crap government. We have no opposition, I won't vote for anyone right now and I feel completely politically homeless.**

^This. It sums up where we’re at. I’ve never felt so disinclined to vote. I always will, because of what women sacrificed to get the vote. But there’s literally no party I really want to vote for. Sad

FOJN · 05/05/2021 23:54

StoneofDestiny

We know Boris Johnson and other Conservative MP's are misogynists but sex based rights become meaningless if you expand the definition of woman to include anyone who self identifies as one.

The Green Party referred to women as non-men.
The LibDems told women who campaigned for the preservation of their sex based rights that they didn't want our vote.
The Labour party did likewise.
Labour Party activists disrupted a WPUK meeting using some fairly intimidating tactics and encouraged the Labour Party to label WPUK as a hate group.
One of the leadership hopefuls thought it was OK for rapists to be housed in women's prisons if they identified as women. The legal definition of rape is none consensual penetration with a penis so is a crime that can only be committed by surgically unaltered males.
The entire executive committee of the Battle and Bexhill CLP resigned in 2017 in protest over the bullying and harassment of the women's officer due to gender related issues. They had appealed for support from higher up in the party but received none.

I am not a Conservative voter (yet) but the willingness of other political parties to throw women under the bus has narrowed my voting options to them or a spoilt ballot which is the route I have been taking but I'm not sure how much longer I can wait for a viable alternative to the Tory Party.

skodadoda · 05/05/2021 23:54

I think the AIBU/YABU split says it all.

fiheka · 05/05/2021 23:55

Karen Ingala Smith and Southall Black Sisters wrote that there were issues with the legislation Priti Patel has pushed through. It has some good things in it, but some stuff that is harmful for women.

fiheka · 05/05/2021 23:57

@skodadoda yes some people will continue to vote for totally corrupt MPs who continually lie and are simply lining their own pockets.
I can't think of any government of any political hue that has been as corrupt as this one.

Zotter · 06/05/2021 00:02

Extremely depressing. Good account of current govt’s corruption.
