Neighbour’s parasol overhangs our garden

My neighbour has a wall mounted umbrella. I haven’t seen it being used until today but have noticed it totally overhangs our garden.

Really pissed off tbh, it’s bad enough that they’re always in their garden (think all day every day at the weekend, hot tub etc). It just looks awful and feels like a massive encroachment on our personal space.

I really don’t want to fall out with her as she’s a generally a good neighbour otherwise. I’m so surprised she thinks this is ok though, I wouldn’t dream of doing similar!

It's not too bad, the dishes on the walls are worse to see !

Notavegan · 01/05/2021 19:19

It crosses your window. I'd never do this to a neighbour and I think she is a cheeky fucker

cardoon · 01/05/2021 19:25

Has she come out and moved it yet!

JinglingHellsBells · 01/05/2021 19:28

That's an appalling cheek of hers.

Of course it's out of order to have an umbrella that far onto someone else's garden. It's almost 50% on your land!

Just ask her to move it so the outermost 'spike' is not further than the top of your fence.

Stand on a chair and give it a good shove yourself.

All the best, honey is better than vinegar as they say, when engaging in public communications

cansu · 01/05/2021 19:47

So it overhangs an area you don't use and has no impact on you at all?
Why would you complain? Really petty.

booksandnooks · 01/05/2021 19:47

You are allowed to cut branches that overhang in your garden. I don't see why you couldn't cut parasols that overhang too 🤫

GuidonianHand · 01/05/2021 19:47

That would definitely annoy me. If your neighbour is generally OK, why worry about just asking them to move it? You don't need an excuse. Excuses give opportunities fr people to work out ways of getting round the problem. Like lifting it higher to accommodate the trellis, as PPs have said. Just say straight that it's overhanging your garden. Possibly more than they realised. And please could they move it.

BackforGood · 01/05/2021 19:49

what I really want to know is of this were your garden would it annoy you too?

No, it wouldn't. But I can't work out why people get so worked up about a lot of things on MN.

SD1978 · 01/05/2021 19:58

If I don't use that part of the garden, there's no plants affected, I don't think I could get that het up about this. If it did actually have an affect on me or my garden I'd ask them to shift it.

tootiredtospeak · 01/05/2021 20:13

Yeah I would ask them to move it saying its blocking out light into the window. If they are generally nice surely it will just be an oversight.

goingtotown · 01/05/2021 20:20

Maybe she doesn’t realise she’s encroaching your garden. Have a word with her & if necessary show her the photo.

DailyMaui · 01/05/2021 21:48

Yes that would really annoy me - but I'm probably overly sensitive to shit like this. I have CF neighbours who have two massive trees right next to my boundary fence (my garden is much lower than theirs and tiny - theirs is about 170 feet long) and who I have to beg, multiple times, to get the trees trimmed back - one of the trees took all the light from my garden and the downstairs of my home from 11am onwards. It finally got trimmed back early this year but of course the other, taller tree is still untrimmed and I will have to hassle and beg for that one to be done too next year. And I used to have a lovely sun filled south facing garden when I moved in 14 years ago (the previous owner planted the second, now taller tree AFTER I'd begged her to trim the other one... why do people do things like this? I get the desire for privacy but why plant tress that will get really big right on the boundary of a much smaller garden? I have nothing against trees, I love trees, they can keep the trees, just keep them a decent height.)

Sorry, bit of a rant. Neighbours encroaching on gardens give me the rage.

Yes. Show them the photo. Then you'll seem less deranged.
Smelborp · 01/05/2021 22:15

Absolutely it would annoy me and they don’t have a right to block any of your garden space. Blocking the window would be most annoying.

There’s a reason you’re allowed to trim back overhanging branches from trees. Hopefully all resolved easily with a quick chat though.

GabriellaMontez · 01/05/2021 22:18

@Somanysocks

Yes it would annoy me. Set up your barbeque under it.
This is what I'd do.
GreyhoundG1rl · 01/05/2021 22:20

Deranged, really?

Bengal12 · 01/05/2021 22:30

I would find it annoying. Whether I was using the space or not. It’s different if it’s a tree that has overgrown and you can trim as needed. Your neighbour should have been more considerate when putting the parasol up, it’s not like you have acres of space. I would ask her nicely, as others have suggested, to move it so that it’s completely over her space.

This 😂
gord2018 · 01/05/2021 22:34

This would piss me right off ! I would wait until bonfire night and set a Catherine wheel off under it 😂

eatsleepread · 01/05/2021 22:39

Wouldn't bother me, but it surprises me that you'd post about it on here - no doubt getting a bit wound up - before mentioning it to her.

RoseMartha · 01/05/2021 22:41

Not particularly . Does it block light in the house?

If so I would have a quick word and politely explain.
