Neighbour’s parasol overhangs our garden

My neighbour has a wall mounted umbrella. I haven’t seen it being used until today but have noticed it totally overhangs our garden.

Really pissed off tbh, it’s bad enough that they’re always in their garden (think all day every day at the weekend, hot tub etc). It just looks awful and feels like a massive encroachment on our personal space.

I really don’t want to fall out with her as she’s a generally a good neighbour otherwise. I’m so surprised she thinks this is ok though, I wouldn’t dream of doing similar!

I’m in the “I wouldn’t care” camp. It looks like the parasol has just swung around a bit

But then I feel like MN is an alternative universe sometimes where people are offended by the tiniest of things

Lavender2018 · 02/05/2021 08:02

With a bit of luck she might have read this thread Grin

JemimaJoy · 02/05/2021 08:51

I'd find this so difficult to get worked up about.

Also, why on earth shouldn't she use her own garden every day?!

KatChocolate · 02/05/2021 09:21

This would annoy me too!

If it’s not moved I would do as others have suggested! Hang string lights, bird feeders & maybe a wind chime to it! Might as well make the most of it! Wink

Tarzaan · 02/05/2021 09:49

So is she moving it then?

HedgePutty · 02/05/2021 09:52

Sorry she is absolutely a cheeky fucker. She looked at it and loved it into your garden as she decided it suited her better than the inconvenience for you. It was not a mistake and if they didn’t immediately move it on your text then that shows it. If it pops over a cm again then text her every single time.

Maves · 02/05/2021 10:03

Yes she's cheeky that's a lot of overhang I'd say you need her to move it as you are growing shit there. Even if you aren't it's bad she must know.

Beelzebop · 02/05/2021 13:21

I would just ask with a big grin if they could move it as it's doing my head in 😃

SchadenfreudePersonified · 02/05/2021 14:23

@YoTheGinPussyOfStMawesOnThigh

OP that's the very place you were going to put your new fire pit isn't it? Shame if the flames got out of control wouldn't it........
I was thinking similar - this is the obvious place for a barbecue . . . . it would be dreadful if something happened to the parasol.
GreyhoundG1rl · 02/05/2021 14:24

As op seems reluctant to even speak to the neighbour I don't think starting turf wars is a great idea.

PaulaTrilloe · 02/05/2021 14:33

Let them know you are painting the fence a dark colour. Don't want to get paint spots on that lovely white parasol!
Trellis is a great idea

I8toys · 02/05/2021 16:45

No that would annoy me too. Push it back over or put something up to block it. How ridiculous that they think they can do this.

KatChocolate · 02/05/2021 20:04

Has she moved it OP?

ToxicNextDoor · 02/05/2021 21:11

Parasol update: It’s now been moved! Tis really odd that she had it like that in the first place....all this talk of trees reminded me that I actually had a tree cut down on her request as it overhung her driveway and blocked her light...so slight double standards there but at least it’s now been moved.

KatChocolate I do like the idea of wind chimes though, have fancied getting some for a while!

I wonder if she’s a mumsnetter!

KatChocolate · 02/05/2021 22:39

@ToxicNextDoor would drown out the sound of the sex pond 😆

longwayoff · 03/05/2021 06:13

I hope she is on here. Now she knows what her neighbour is really like she can avoid OP as much as possible.

Bonnieonthelam · 03/05/2021 06:19

@ToxicNextDoor

The sun comes from the left so I can see why she has it like that and I think it also gives them a bit of privacy for the hot tub. It obviously won’t be up all the time....what I really want to know is of this were your garden would it annoy you too?
Yes it would and I’d ask her to move it.
l2b2 · 03/05/2021 09:19

@longwayoff
I hope so too and the neighbour will hopefully learn that she should stay within the confines of her own property in future.
