Neighbour’s parasol overhangs our garden

My neighbour has a wall mounted umbrella. I haven’t seen it being used until today but have noticed it totally overhangs our garden.

Really pissed off tbh, it’s bad enough that they’re always in their garden (think all day every day at the weekend, hot tub etc). It just looks awful and feels like a massive encroachment on our personal space.

I really don’t want to fall out with her as she’s a generally a good neighbour otherwise. I’m so surprised she thinks this is ok though, I wouldn’t dream of doing similar!

'Hi neighbour we are starting fixing up our garden this weekend for summer, so can you please move your parasol back into your garden. Thanks.'

Honeyroar · 01/05/2021 17:06

Peg a load of knickers to it?

GreyhoundG1rl · 01/05/2021 17:07

Peg a load of knickers to it?
Perfect 😂
KizzyMoo · 01/05/2021 17:14

That would seriously annoy me beyond words. I'd be freaking out inside if my neighbour did that but I think I've got an undiagnosed condition.

Overthebow · 01/05/2021 17:15

Trim it so it doesn’t overhang anymore? You’re allowed to trim overhanging tree branches so why not a parasol.

KizzyMoo · 01/05/2021 17:16

It doesn't go there whys it there 😱🙈

Oh totally this!
ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 01/05/2021 17:20

Light a nice smoky fire under it, it should funnel under the parasol nicely.

GreyhoundG1rl · 01/05/2021 17:24

God, just looking at that picture again. Who in their right mind would think that was ok? So very ignorant.

Flowers500 · 01/05/2021 17:24

I really wouldn’t have the ability to make myself care Grin I’m sure they won’t either!

Eh?
Enough4me · 01/05/2021 17:26

Dirty knickers (smear some brown sauce skids on them), if asked say you need extra hanging space and through they were obliging.

Summersun2020 · 01/05/2021 17:28

Honestly haven’t got the time to care about a foot of airspace over my garden. How petty. Also so what if they use their garden every day? How cheeky of you to think it’s any of your business. You’re the CF here.

Pricklykaktus · 01/05/2021 17:29

Yes it would definitely annoy me. It’s just a foot or so but inconsiderate all the same.

Enough4me · 01/05/2021 17:34

Yes OP get over yourself expecting your neighbours to respect the property lines. After all, it's not like it's your home and they are blatantly ignoring that fact...it must just be you and your cheekiness!

LyndaSnellsSniff · 01/05/2021 17:39

You could attach some fairy lights to the part hanging over and plug them into their socket.

Nodal · 01/05/2021 17:41

can you shove it sideways or be d it back? This would annoy me too.

Redburnett · 01/05/2021 17:41

If the height of the parasol is such that you or your DH or visiting friends etc could walk into a 'point' and potentially damage your/their eye then i think you would be justified in explaining this and asking neighbour to move or adjust parasol. Personally I would find such a situation unacceptable. I think you just need to work out a polite script and then talk to neighbour. If they are normally lovely it should work out OK, just phrase is as nicely as you can.

Freddiefox · 01/05/2021 17:42

@ToxicNextDoor

Ok, they’ve gone out so I’ve had a closer look and it does look like it’s adjustable. I tried to push it over and I wouldn’t budge so reckon it must be locked in place. The trellis we need to put up will mean it can’t encroach any more!
I’m away this almost looks passive aggressive to all of a sudden put trellis up. Just talk to them, try to catch them, and just say it’s blocking the light
GreyhoundG1rl · 01/05/2021 17:42

It’s probably on a heavy base
Lipz · 01/05/2021 17:44

This is your space. It doesn't matter if you use it to store or sit, it's your space.

The overhang is not small. It's clearly shading your garden.

Those parasols are not very high, do you hit off it when walking past.

So they've a hot tub there? Right under your window? That must be painful to listen to.

You have a few suggestions including saying it to them, but I think they know it hangs over, where do they think the other half of their umbrella has gone? I like the Bbq idea especially if it's a disposable one, lots of smoke and if you cook potato skins it smells like dead bodies. Or hang some bird feeders or throw some loose seeds on top, you'll get plenty of bird shit on it.

Nodal · 01/05/2021 17:45

I'd get a firepit and use it right underneath or a BBQ - the smoke will discolour it and funnel into to whatever is underneath.

I can't actually believe there are people on here saying they think this is ok. I am gobsmacked.

LakieLady · 01/05/2021 17:45

@ToxicNextDoor

The sun comes from the left so I can see why she has it like that and I think it also gives them a bit of privacy for the hot tub. It obviously won’t be up all the time....what I really want to know is of this were your garden would it annoy you too?
It would piss me off really badly, so clearly YANBU!
Greenmarmalade · 01/05/2021 17:47

No, this would not annoy me in the slightest.

You’re being incredibly petty.

GreyhoundG1rl · 01/05/2021 17:47

Oh God, it’s covering a hot tub? Right up against the fence? ☹️
