To wonder what it is about “no overnight stays till 17 May” that is so hard to understand?

So many colleagues and acquaintances merrily talking today about plans to go and stay with relatives for the bank holiday. Nobody has any shame. We’re waiting till the 17th. Does nobody care any more?

Unless she's one of the ones who are vaccinated but still catch it, and you kill her

Vanishingly unlikely. If the pp's DM was one of those unfortunate ones, the chances are she'd just have a bad cold. Vaccination isn't 100% effective against any illness, but it is pretty close to 100% effective against serious illness.

HelloMissus · 30/04/2021 09:03

We were told data not dates.
The data says we’re at the least problematic point we’ve been throughout this period.
The government know this. And they know compliance is almost gone.

poppycat10 · 30/04/2021 09:03

(that's Covid vaccination, not any vaccination)

HaveringWavering · 30/04/2021 09:03

You are spectacularly missing the point @FrangipaniDeLaSqueegeeMop. I am not advocating doing what we are told because of fear. I am advocating following the law because I am not arrogant enough to second-guess the government’s scientific and medical advisers who have thought carefully about how to get and keep risk at a manageable level. And because (if all goes well and people DO follow the rules) things will be easier by 17 May and again in June. Not because Covid will magically disappear overnight on 16 May, but because, statistically, it will be the most sensible date to ease things up further.

You see, so many people are saying “ah we’re practically at the end already, so I’m stopping now.” My point is that there is so little time left now that it should be easy just to hold on. The Govt knew full well this was a bank holiday weekend and deliberately chosen not to lift restrictions in advance of it.

You do that then, Havering. Others will do themselves.

ravelston · 30/04/2021 09:08

What did these people at work say when you questioned their law breaking?
I've stuck to the rules but I let others get on with their lives. I'd hate to turn into a person that questions people lack of "shame" for committing the god awful crime of visiting family

Somerford · 30/04/2021 09:08

Screaming STAY THE FUCK HOME at people doesn't work any more, some people seem to be very sad about that.

osbertthesyrianhamster · 30/04/2021 09:10

Indeed.

A mixture of “oh I didn’t know it wasn’t allowed” (yeah, right) and “Oh well a week or so doesn’t matter though, does it?”. I just said that we we had booked time to visit family from the 17th as we preferred to wait until it was legal. The implication was clear.

Do you know what, if my twice vaccinated DM caught Covid at my house and died, then I would have been very, very unlucky but I would still stand by my current risk assessment, thank you very much!

DiscordandRhyme · 30/04/2021 09:12

No, not really.

We have been doing this long enough.

Plus it's not like magically Covid becomes safer on the 17th is it?

Oh, you’re the first person to say that! Well done, straight to the top of the critical thinking class!

OP I suggest you get a hobby which is actually relaxing rather than your judgemental soap box.

Covid sucks trust me I know I'm still recovering many weeks down the road (came from DS nursery via key worker parent before you accuse me of rule breaking!).
But the mental strain on everyone is astronomical in fact Govt themselves thought people would only do a few weeks of lock down before the fatigue of it kicked in.
People are rightly questioning the logic of some of the rules so in Scotland you can meet your mum inside in a cafe but not in your house..... In England you can meet them in a shop but not in your house. In Liverpool you can be part of a 6000 test in a nightclub...... You can stay in a hotel with countless others etc etc etc.

Yes ventilation is a big factor but honestly get a hobby rather than finger pointing, judging and looking down from your moral high horse!

osbertthesyrianhamster · 30/04/2021 09:15

What implication? So wait till the 17th then. Others won't.

HaveringWavering · 30/04/2021 09:16

The implication that I disapprove of law breaking.
OP posts:
ravelston · 30/04/2021 09:19

@HaveringWavering, you actually questioned grown adults about their plans then advised them of yours in order to make yourself seem superior?
As I said I've been following the rules but I'd never question someone else's plans, absolutely none of my business.
You must be in a very fortunate position if all you have to worry about is what others are doing and questioning their lack of shame

Temp023 · 30/04/2021 09:21

Oh do go and have a lie down OP, maybe a damp flannel over your eyes; then a walk in the sunshine, maybe an al fresco coffee?
You will feel SO much better!

osbertthesyrianhamster · 30/04/2021 09:23

Oh, well, you have your answer then, they don't give a fuck that you disapprove of their plans.

I'd have rolled my eyes. I can't abide Covid bores.

HelloMissus · 30/04/2021 09:25

The fact is that it’s actually better for people to do this in increments rather than everyone do it on 17th.
The government know this and are carefully watching the data as people have started mixing.
Some people will of course wait and they need that. But they also need others not to. Which is why there isn’t any policing of it (except by busy bodies).

TheOneWithTheBigNose · 30/04/2021 09:29

The implication that I disapprove of law breaking

But you’re well aware that they probably don’t give a shiny shit what you approve or disapprove of though, aren’t you?

RuggerHug · 30/04/2021 09:34

@TheKeatingFive

A few weeks.

You’re conveniently forgetting the year that’s come before this.

We’ve been constantly told we’re locking down to protect the elderly and vulnerable and/or the NHS. That’s been done. Lockdown was never about protecting healthy 20 somethings.

I'm not forgetting. It's that for a lot of people they've already done so much, why cock it up at the last minute?
osbertthesyrianhamster · 30/04/2021 09:37

Maybe they're sick of it. Maybe they never did anything much about it anyway and didn't do the lockdowns or follow it all to the letter. Who knows? And from the sounds of it, plenty of people don't care, either.

TheKeatingFive · 30/04/2021 09:37

why cock it up at the last minute?

If the vacs work, the implications of ‘cock ups’ at this stage are minimal. If they don’t work, then we’re in longer term trouble, probably better to make hay while the sun shines.

btwwhichonespink · 30/04/2021 09:38

@RuggerHug

Mumsnet is eye opening for stuff like this. You literally have a few weeks to wait until everyone is vaccinated and so many people are still going "Fuck everyone else, I DAHN WANNAAAAAAH BE DECENT ". A few weeks.
A few more weeks, on top of the 400+ weeks already behind us. And that's just to find out if we are allowed. That's when the decision is being revealed.

You should be thanking people for their sacrifice and be glad that there are many rational people in the UK who can think for themselves. You probably can't foresee where a 'just following orders' mentality can take a country but millions of us can.

givemushypeasachance · 30/04/2021 09:38

At my friends' primary school year five have a burst bubble again today, so that's those three classes of 9/10 year olds stuck isolating at home for ten days and homeschooling fun. Making your own 'risk assessment' is all well and good, but if you have kids in school or aren't vaccinated and work with other people, you coming down with covid can still impact on other people.
