To never wear a mask again!

Now fully vaccinated.

There’s no point to me wearing a mask anymore and I’m seeing more and more people who may or may not be fully vaccinated not wearing them so why should I bother with the discomfort of wearing one?

WIBU to totally abandon them with glee?!

How much does an unwashed cloth or reused disposable mask reduce transmission? This is what most people wear.

Who are these people you know wearing unwashed masks? Everyone I know who wears one chucks them in the wash the minute they come home. The only one I know of who doesn't wash their mask that they reluctantly wear since it became mandatory in certain places is the crank who thinks every single country is haemorhaging money for the shits and giggles and last washed their hands sometime in the 90s.

I like most people I imagine take a handful of disposable masks out with me and never reuse them.

@medebourne

Nobody likes wearing a mask and of course nobody wants to wear them forever. However, it's just a bit of cloth which definitely protects you and others (read the actual science rather than watching youtube videos). What on earth is the HARM of wearing a mask for a little longer?

OP you are acting as if the government and scientists are your mum and dad and you are a teenager. It's just a scrap of cloth. wear it because it protects you and others.

Unfortunately though @medebourne there are lots of Mumsnetters who very much DO like wearing a mask and very much would like to be wearing them forever, or at least for several years.

Where. I genuinely have not seen anyone to say seriously they really enjoy it and want to wear it for ever.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/04/2021 13:56

Tbf the masks stop people sneezing all over the stuff in shops so there are some benefits🙈

summerisler · 29/04/2021 13:56

@Wildswim Genuine question - out of curiosity. How was it making your asthma worse?

userxx · 29/04/2021 14:16

@Jennifer2021 Nobody I know does that. Mine is in the bottom of my handbag, crawling with germs probably, I wear it for 20 mins a week max when i sprint around the supermarket then it gets chucked back in my handbag.

butterpuffed · 29/04/2021 14:19

I don't understand your "glee", OP. I don't know anyone who actually likes wearing a mask but it protects others, and you, to a certain extent.

Jumpingintosummer · 29/04/2021 14:23

Hmm some people just like to be argumentative. Clearly the OP believes she knows best, hardly seems worth asking AIBU given her certainty she isn’t!

Excited101 · 29/04/2021 14:27

You’re asked (told?) to do one thing and you think you’re what, too important? Cleverer than the rest of us to not do it? Get over yourself op.

You don't wash your masks? Gross. Can I ask out of curiosity how often you put laundry on?

I have a couple of multipacks of sainsburys cloth masks (in nice teal/grey colours) and keep them in a basket by the door. When my dh or I come home, just stick it in the machine (or on the floor in front of it) and it goes in the next load. It's pretty easy. We do have spare disposables in the car and pram basket too.

Mummy1608 · 29/04/2021 14:44

If you only wear your mask to the supermarket that means you:
-Don't go to restaurants or pubs
-don't take public transport

I don't know about you but that seems a bit boring?

Biscusting · 29/04/2021 15:00

I wore my mask through-out lock down to protect elderly and the vulnerable whilst I carried on working.

Would be really nice if the vaccinated people could extend me the same courtesy whilst I patiently wait for my vaccine.

SoupDragon · 29/04/2021 15:16

Where are these "lots of mumsnetters?" Did you mean to type "one or two"?

whiteshark · 29/04/2021 15:33

I'm by no means the COVID police but your reasons a stupid and selfish.

Scarlettpixie · 29/04/2021 15:45

@TinaYouFatLard

God I fucking hate the masks.

At what point will the lockdown fanatics permit us to dispose of them? Covid is not going away ever.

Well if it doesn’t then we need to keep wearing masks.
LilMidge01 · 29/04/2021 15:57

Presumably you have been vaccinated because you are at higher risk (be that age, medical, caring responsibilities, job etc)

I am very low risk and as such have not yet been vaccinated. However many of those in my category have also put up with a lot during this pandemic, have been the hardest hit financially and socially isolated as not all my age group are settled in their own family units yet and are experiencing job losses and social isolation...but it's all largely been in order to help protect those further up the vulnerability list. So we see the bigger picture....

However, you, as someone more vulnerable deciding you dont give a shit now you've been vaccinated, when loads of us still haven't, and you can still pass it on and therefore keep adding fuel to the pandemic fire to prolong our suffering...kind of selfish and a slap in the face tbh.

I really don't like wearing a mask but have got used to it. Don't make sweeping generalisations you can't back up.

LilMidge01 · 29/04/2021 16:00

Also I'm not keen for this to happen indefinitely. But that's exactly the point..just because you feel it's over for YOU, doesnt mean you get ti dictate when this ends, when loads of us are still gagging for a vaccine and getting back to 'normality'

vodkaredbullgirl · 29/04/2021 16:15

Hate having to work a 12 1/2 hour shifts, wearing a mask all the time. We have to end of, will wear one until we are told other wise.

Crunchymum · 29/04/2021 16:22

Where are all the places you are going maskless @MasieMaskless?

Everywhere I go regularly - supermarket, school runs, swimming lessons - all still enforce masks!

Echobelly · 29/04/2021 16:23

Bear in mind it looks as though AstraZeneca vax offers only around 10% protection from mild-moderate SA variant and there may be others where various vacs will be found be less effectivewww.forbes.com/sites/williamhaseltine/2021/03/17/astrazeneca-vaccine-fails-to-protect-against-the-south-african-variant/

I think we will have to go through at least another winter wearing them indoors when mixing with lots of others before we can stop using them inside.

99victoria · 29/04/2021 16:28

I haven't washed my mask since last year. I've probably worn it for about 2 hours in total since then. I put it on fir the few seconds it takes to walk to an outside seat at an eatery or to nip to the loo. I don't use public transport or go to the shops - do it all online now.
I do put it in a plastic ziplock bag in my handbag between wears but that's just so it doesn't get too dirty. I don't really believe mask wearing has any substantial effect on reducing the spread of the virus.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 29/04/2021 16:34

Honestly, some of the hygiene stuff here is bit of an indicator why we have pandemic...

Have you ever realised how many people didn't wash their hands on public toilets?🤢 I used hand gel well before covid came because half a people are pigs.

And now not washing masks. Yuck. It's not like you have to handwash it at exactly 45.7 degrees with 4 drops of a very specific cleaner.

It just goes in a wash.

It’s so odd to say ‘I don’t believe in masks reducing the spread of the virus’ yet still wearing one yet not following the very basic rules on how to wear it. Why not just wash it?
Pumperthepumper · 29/04/2021 16:36

Also a year of it festering in your bag after you’ve even worn it once - does it not stink? Why would you want that on your face?
