To be shocked at what’s just happened on the school run

So today after picking DCs up from school/nursery a car that was parked up close behind my car put their car into accelerate instead of reverse and ended up pinning me between my rear bumper and their front bumper whilst I was putting bags etc in the boot.

Mum in question did not realise one of my legs was taking the brunt of this until I was shouting to tell her to reverse.
She did apologise at the time, but didn’t get out of the car to ask if I was ok or anything like that!

I’ve got home now and my knee already is swollen and starting to bruise.. I’m also thinking this could have been a much worse accident if this was DS stood in between the car.

Fortunately a parent came over to check if I was ok and he did catch the incident on his dash cam.
So would you put this down as an unfortunate accident or do anything about it? I’m not even sure who or if I would report it too.

So did she definitely know she hit you?

It’s an injury road traffic collision, it must be reported to the Police. Its a legal requirement for the driver to report it. She also should have exchanged details with you. I would also ask for a copy of the dashcam footage from the other parent should you wish to go down the compensation route.

You’re very lucky. A friend of ours had this happen to him. He’s never been unable to walk unaided since.

Gazelda · 28/04/2021 16:22

Don't let this wait. Take photos of your knee and get in touch with the witness to get their full contact details. It's important the dash am footage isn't deleted or recorded over - check how long it is available for it whether it can be downloaded. Then report to the police.

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 28/04/2021 16:22

My cousin had this happen, with her own car that rolled when the handbrake failed. She had a fracture of the flat bit under her knee, but she was able to walk on it.

So, you really should get it looked at.

OwlBeThere · 28/04/2021 16:22

Report it to your insurance company and send them the dash footage so they should be able to trace her. My mother had a similar accident that involved her breaking her ankle. The police and insurance will need to be involved, you also need to see a doctor,

JackieTheFart · 28/04/2021 16:23

This is not a ‘little thing’. You’re in shock, please get in contact with the man with the dash cam and go to the police.

Viviennemary · 28/04/2021 16:23

It needs to be reported. Its more or less a hit and run. Next person she injures might not be so lucky.

Jesusmaryjosephandthecamel · 28/04/2021 16:24

@Mydarlingmyhamburger

I’d report this op as it was outside a school. She could have hit a child
It’s irrelevant where it happened and should absolutely be reported as it’s a legal requirement on the other driver to report it. It’s a fail to stop injury collision.
Notonthestairs · 28/04/2021 16:24

You must get your knee looked at - that's a priority.

Then talk to the police and take it from there.

VimFuego101 · 28/04/2021 16:24

This could have been horrific if you had a child/ toddler with you who were smaller and head height to her bumper. I would definitely report and document/ take photos. As a previous poster said, when the adrenaline wears off you might realize you're hurt more than you originally realized.

LST · 28/04/2021 16:25

I would definitely get your knee checked and definitely report. What a twat she is!

Holothane · 28/04/2021 16:25

Hugs hope your ok.

billy1966 · 28/04/2021 16:25

OP,

You are in shock but you are very silly not to get your knee checked out and reporting a hit and run.

Your knee needs an MRI to check if it's ok.

You do NOT want to have done unknown damage that could be triggered by something innocent in the future.

Knee surgery is a complete PITA for down time.

That woman is a disgrace to hit someone and not get out of the car.

Y
She could have done irreparable damage.

Get that dash cam and report.

travailtotravel · 28/04/2021 16:25

Get checked out.
Find her and ask for her insurance details - if your injury requires physio/time off work etc you will need to claim on her insurance
Report to school
Report to police
If she fails to engage, report again.

redcandlelight · 28/04/2021 16:26

police & a&e (or minor injuries). you need to document your injuries.

RightYesButNo · 28/04/2021 16:26

One more time so they hear it in the back: GET. YOUR. KNEE. CHECKED. Unfortunately, there are a lot of ligaments and tendons at play in the knee, and there’s just no way to be sure it’s okay, as even if it can bear weight, you may still have torn something. I don’t want to make you feel worse and more worried than you already do, but if you don’t have a knee injury diagnosed promptly, you can end up with one of those knees that “hurts a bit whenever it rains,” and you are much, much too young for that (everyone is, unless they’re 105).

Also, while the chance is very, VERY small, they may want to take a blood test and give you a once-over to ensure there’s no blood clot, or one developing, depending on how bad the bruise is. It’s common just to make sure that there’s no chance of you being the one in a million, especially since you’ve received the injury by being pressed between two (very hard) objects.

Maggiesfarm · 28/04/2021 16:27

Please do report the accident to the police. The woman has behaved badly, not only with her driving but the fact that she didn't jump out to see how you were.

GreyhoundG1rl · 28/04/2021 16:27

Of course it needs reporting.

waitingforthenextseason · 28/04/2021 16:28

Please call the police. FFS. She drove away. She was flustered because she had hit someone with her car! And still drove away!

BrilliantBetty · 28/04/2021 16:30

@themalamander

*@BrilliantBetty

She hit someone and left the scene. That's 2 crimes she committed.*

My question was what will the police do.

Anyone know if they will contact the driver directly, investigate, go through insurance, what actually happens? (I'm not the driver! Just curious how this would be handled by police)

fine and possibly driving ban

skodadoda · 28/04/2021 16:32

OP, I think it’s a legal requirement to report to police any accident involving injury.
Be kind to yourself 💐

MoltenLasagne · 28/04/2021 16:32

Another one reiterating GO TO A&E NOW.

I hurt my knee in my early 20s, thought it was fine as I could still walk on it and got the bus / hobbled home. Woke up the next day and couldn't put weight on it at all, was crying in pain just getting downstairs and into a taxi to the hospital. Took 6 months before I was walking properly again and years of physio to get back to normal strength.

Jumpers268 · 28/04/2021 16:33

Please report it to the police and also get the dashcam footage as she may deny involvement. Please also get your injuries checked ASAP. That could've been a child and could've been a lot worse. I hope you're okay.

intheenddoesitreallymatter · 28/04/2021 16:33

This is a hit and run and I'm so sorry you went through this, it sounds awfully scary. It's just incredibly, incredibly lucky it was you and not your little ones.

Please get yourself to A&E and make sure you're OK, you could have some internal damage/fracture. You also need to call the police and contact that man for his dash cam. Was she definitely sober? It's not normal for her to have had such delayed reactions. You need to tell school as well, there was a crash on their property and a child could have been injured.
