To be shocked at what’s just happened on the school run

So today after picking DCs up from school/nursery a car that was parked up close behind my car put their car into accelerate instead of reverse and ended up pinning me between my rear bumper and their front bumper whilst I was putting bags etc in the boot.

Mum in question did not realise one of my legs was taking the brunt of this until I was shouting to tell her to reverse.
She did apologise at the time, but didn’t get out of the car to ask if I was ok or anything like that!

I’ve got home now and my knee already is swollen and starting to bruise.. I’m also thinking this could have been a much worse accident if this was DS stood in between the car.

Fortunately a parent came over to check if I was ok and he did catch the incident on his dash cam.
So would you put this down as an unfortunate accident or do anything about it? I’m not even sure who or if I would report it too.

Good that you reported op. I take it she wasn't there again today?

billy1966 · 29/04/2021 16:26

Great update, especially on your knee.

Follow their advice, especially to elevate and rest it.

Knees are very tricky, they have to be mindes, particularly the older you get.

Please update us as to the progress. I got one am really interested in what the driver was thinking!!!

itsgettingwierd · 29/04/2021 16:28

Glad you reported.

It's not so much the driving into you - accidents happen.

It's the lack of due diligence after to make sure you were ok, unhurt, able to get home and to exchange or offer to exchange details.

I'm sure she'll try the "I didn't realise I'd hit her or hurt her" line of defence. Which is the whole issue. She should have found out.

Stickytreacle · 29/04/2021 16:33

Great update OP, I hope everything goes favourably for you from now on.

SofiaMichelle · 29/04/2021 16:36

OP, you only need the registration number to start a claim on her insurance.

I'm not for one minute suggesting you're only interested in compensation, but going after her that way will at least teach her a valuable lesson!

MumW · 29/04/2021 16:42

So glad to hear there was no serious damage. I think you've been very lucky.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 29/04/2021 16:47

How did it go today

endofthelinefinally · 29/04/2021 17:07

You have done the right thing OP.

My DC was the innocent victim of an accident caused by dangerous driving. Nearly 6 years later the compensation money has long run out, but we are still paying for physio and chiropractic treatment. You can't tell what the recovery time/outcome will be. You must pursue this and the woman who left the scene of the accident should be ashamed.

@Molyka88

Sorry for the late Update! So I’ve been and had my knee checked over, my local MIU sent me up to the main hospital as they had no X-ray facility. The X-ray shown no breakages of the kneecap fortunately. Bruising and swelling should go down with some rest. I’m so glad it is not any more serious, I’m still in a pain but this is to be expected. I have also reported this to the police, a log was filled in over the phone and I need to attend the station tomorrow to fill in a NCRF form. The operative on the phone said I was absolutely right to report and that details should have been exchanged at the time. I have the dashcam footage now too after speaking with the other parent who witnessed the incident yesterday.

Thanks again for all your advice, I feel much better this afternoon.

Please can anyone who claimed reporting to the police would be 'upsetting' for the driver if she was visited at her home, read this update from the OP.

The driver was legally obliged to give her details (you didn't need to give yours, you are a pedestrian).

Claim on her registration for personal injury. Perhaps then she'll come to her senses and realise her responsibilities as a driver.

@Derbee

Good update, glad nothing is broken. And well done for reporting to the police. As an extra, and just in case, I’d say it’s worth taking photos of your knee with the bruising/swelling
This is really good advice. Take pictures of your knee. They will be invaluable if it doesn't get 100% better and you want to take action.
SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 29/04/2021 18:22

I’m glad that there was nothing broken, and I’m sure you’ve done the right thing in reporting the incident to the police.

Now - rest, ice and elevate that leg!

HarrietYeti · 29/04/2021 18:22

Really glad your knee seems ok OP and that the police now know about the incident. My friend once bumped someone's car reversing into a parking space in a car park, didn't even know she's done it (she drove a big 4 x4 at the time), but when the person returned to the car they noticed a mark on the bumper, called the police who tracked her down through CCTV and charged her with failing to report an accident. All worked out but just to say the police do take it seriously.

Harryo · 29/04/2021 18:43

Glad nothing is broken but just be careful with your knee incase there is other damage.

78falalalala · 29/04/2021 18:45

They do nothing. I was pinned between 2 cars at school - they reversed into me & drove off, only stopped when flagged down by other parents. Police do nothing.

felulageller · 29/04/2021 18:46

That's a serious road accident causing an injury.

You need to get the police to take forensic photos of your leg before the bruising fades.

You could have a long term injury!

IntermittentParps · 29/04/2021 19:09

Yes, do get the injury photographed.
When the police operative said details should have been exchanged at the time, did they also say you should get them from the other driver? or that they could trace them from the footage? How are they/you going to proceed?

The driver was very irresponsible and is either clueless or deliberately incompetent. She needs the wind put up her by the police.

annacondom · 29/04/2021 19:16

I just wanted to add that arnica is brilliant for bruises - it doesn't make them go away faster but it does take the pain away. Get some onto your knee asap!

Ginuwine · 29/04/2021 19:28

@78falalalala

No. That's not true.

In your experience they didn't. That's not all collective experience.

KarmaNoMore · 29/04/2021 19:32

So glad it looks ok and good on you to report her, bloody distracted drivers do not learn if their actions, or lack of, have no consequences.

Cushionsnotpillows · 30/04/2021 15:48

I'm another one seriously over invested in this thread so thank you for the update OP! How's your knee today?

InMySpareTime · 16/05/2021 14:59

Did you get anywhere with this? Did they find the driver? How's your knee?
