To be shocked at what’s just happened on the school run

So today after picking DCs up from school/nursery a car that was parked up close behind my car put their car into accelerate instead of reverse and ended up pinning me between my rear bumper and their front bumper whilst I was putting bags etc in the boot.

Mum in question did not realise one of my legs was taking the brunt of this until I was shouting to tell her to reverse.
She did apologise at the time, but didn’t get out of the car to ask if I was ok or anything like that!

I’ve got home now and my knee already is swollen and starting to bruise.. I’m also thinking this could have been a much worse accident if this was DS stood in between the car.

Fortunately a parent came over to check if I was ok and he did catch the incident on his dash cam.
So would you put this down as an unfortunate accident or do anything about it? I’m not even sure who or if I would report it too.

Call the police, get the dashcam footage to them and go up to get your knee check.

daytriptovulcan · 28/04/2021 15:45

So you re the victim of a hit and run basically. Yes, its serious.

WineGetsMeThroughIt · 28/04/2021 15:45

YANBU - but tbh she was probably mortified and not thinking straight. She may have driven off after seeing that you were ok just out of sheer embarrassment and not knowing what to do. Did you get her plate number? I would try and track her down tomorrow and raise the issue with her as I hate to involve the police in anything, but that's just me and my anxiety. I always find involving them quite extreme, but if you're injured you should bring it to their attention, but unless you've got her details I don't think there's anything they can do. I would also raise it with the school who would hopefully help by mentioning the incident in a newsletter or email asking for witnesses.

PurpleDaisies · 28/04/2021 15:46

Totally agree @wombatspoopcubes, the school has no power to investigate car accidents. I’m not sure what anyone would expect them to reasonably do.

SoupDragon · 28/04/2021 15:46

I would absolutely report it to the police and give then the dash cam footage!

I also agree that you should get your leg checked.

FeatheredHope · 28/04/2021 15:46

She didn’t get out or check you were ok? I’m not normally one to jump to “report it” but this is really serious. She could have really seriously injured you. Thank god your knee bore the brunt of it and and not a small child.
I am honestly quite shocked and hope your knee is ok. Please get it looked at.

CadburyCake · 28/04/2021 15:47

I’d call the police and report it on their non emergency number, that’s appalling, it’s basically a hit and run.

Then go to hospital/minor injuries and get your knee checked out.

CombatBarbie · 28/04/2021 15:47

Embarrassed or not she should have at the very least got out her car!! Def report! Imagine if that was a child who she couldn't see

trilbydoll · 28/04/2021 15:47

Get your knee checked, my colleague's husband had something similar and never walked freely again. Get the dashcam footage too. If you need physio etc i would hope you could claim damages on her insurance like you would for whiplash?

Molyka88 · 28/04/2021 15:48

I think I was just so shocked that it happened I got back in the car. Didn’t think about asking for details etc.
She definitely did see me as I barely had enough room to open my boot.

I’ll email the school to let them know, I haven’t got the reg but the parent with the dash cam footage may.
It won’t be hard to get though as she will be doing the same school run again.

I’m a bit tearful actually, I know it’s only a small I’m incident but it’s shook me up..
I’ve realised now I’m actually now in a bit of pain, there is bruising where my knee got pinned against the bumper, and i must have done at twist to try and move it so I may need to get it checked,

Police or at the very minimum inform the school! That woman is a danger! Who would just drive off without checking?!

2bazookas · 28/04/2021 15:48

You report it to police and your insurers. You note the name and address of the witness , take pictures of your leg, call your GP and either get an appointment or go to A and E to have the injury recorded and assessed.

anon12345678901 · 28/04/2021 15:49

Report to the police, go to A&E and get checked out. Unfortunate accident maybe, but she showed complete disregard when she didn't even get out her vehicle. If it had been a child it could have been much worse. The police can contact her and remind her leaving the scene of an accident is actually a crime. I'd also want her details to report to her insurance, in case you need long term medical treatment. Knees can be tricky in healing and need physio to avoid long term pain depending on the damage.

She could have seriously injured the OP. Or the next time, kill a child. That's extreme. Who gives a fuck if she's 'mortified' or 'embarrassed' you don't hit someone with your bloody car and drive off! The dashcam will have her details. She should be bloody prosecuted! School can't do shit, it happened on a public road.

You really need to see someone about your anxiety if you'd honestly allow someone to get away with harming you because of it.

Floralnomad · 28/04/2021 15:50

Just to be clear did the other driver know that she actually hit you or did she think you were shouting to alert her to nearly hitting you / your car ? I’d be tempted to try and get her name and tell her you may need her insurance details rather than going straight to the police . Get your knee looked at ASAP .

osbertthesyrianhamster · 28/04/2021 15:51

Take photos and vid footage of your leg, get it checked out, get the witness involved and go to the police! This pillock is a menace who could have killed someone.

MoltenLasagne · 28/04/2021 15:51

That made me gasp reading it, how horrible for you and the alternative doesn't bare thinking about. I can't believe she didn't get out to check you were ok.

You definitely need to report it (preferably if you can find the man with the dash cam again) but I'd also get your knee checked out as she may have done more damage than you've realised, especially if shock is still minimising how much pain you're experiencing.

Notaroadrunner · 28/04/2021 15:51

Contact the police before the school. The school, at most, will possibly send a message to parents to be more careful when parking outside, but the police need to be told that this imbicile ran into you and then had the cheek to drive off. And get your knee checked out by gp or A&E today before it gets any worse.

Ariannah · 28/04/2021 15:52

You need to report to police and go to A&E. You may be entitled to compensation from her car insurance, you should look at putting in a claim via a solicitor.

Crappyfridays7 · 28/04/2021 15:53

So her car was facing yours and she drove forward onto you? She must’ve seen when she got in how close she was to you and then seen you standing putting your stuff away in the boot and then felt her car connect with something and you shouting? So why on earth would you not get out, check your car & you and her car? She just drove off? Def police, get your leg checked too ASAP best to be safe. She clearly wasn’t paying attention and it’s careless driving at the least!! Hope you’re ok op. Sounds horrible take care Flowers

PembrokeshireDreaming · 28/04/2021 15:53

Please report this to the police and get your knee checked out at A and E. For all you know she doesn't have a license / was drunk / no insurance..............let the police check her out especially as you have dashcam footage

kizkiz · 28/04/2021 15:54

Yes, you have to report to the police, as you are injured, but you can do it online via their website. No need to call.
Provide the dash cam driver as a witness on the form and let them deal with that side of it.
Get the footage from your witness, and the vrm of the other car, then claim through your insurance

SoupDragon · 28/04/2021 15:54

I think it's irrelevant given she couldn't be arsed to get out of the car or even give the OP her contact details.
Derbee · 28/04/2021 15:56

Jesus, OP. This is a hit and run. It needs to be reported to the police, and you need to ask the other parent for a copy of their dashcam footage.

Reporting to the school is reasonable, just as a heads up, but it is a police matter, not for the school to sort out.

It’s easy to downplay situations when you’re in shock, but this is a hit and run and the police should treat is as such

Frymetothemoon · 28/04/2021 15:56

Police, insurance, doctor. It's a no-brainer
