To be shocked at what’s just happened on the school run

Molyka88 · 28/04/2021 15:34

So today after picking DCs up from school/nursery a car that was parked up close behind my car put their car into accelerate instead of reverse and ended up pinning me between my rear bumper and their front bumper whilst I was putting bags etc in the boot.

Mum in question did not realise one of my legs was taking the brunt of this until I was shouting to tell her to reverse.
She did apologise at the time, but didn’t get out of the car to ask if I was ok or anything like that!

I’ve got home now and my knee already is swollen and starting to bruise.. I’m also thinking this could have been a much worse accident if this was DS stood in between the car.

Fortunately a parent came over to check if I was ok and he did catch the incident on his dash cam.
So would you put this down as an unfortunate accident or do anything about it? I’m not even sure who or if I would report it too.

Also, you don't need to speak to the driver again. Please don't feel like you have to. The police will be able to give you her insurance details - failing that once you've got the registration you can check MID yourself.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 28/04/2021 16:36

My question was what will the police do.

Anyone know if they will contact the driver directly, investigate, go through insurance, what actually happens? (I'm not the driver! Just curious how this would be handled by police)

It depends on the circumstances. Generally a police report is used as evidence of having done "the right thing" by reporting the accident. If injuries have occurred, the other driver could be charged with a variety of offences - driving without due care and attention, dangerous driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Even if the driver isn't charged, the report can be used by OP's insurance company as evidence that the other driver left the scene of an accident, especially as OP has a witness.

TheSockMonster · 28/04/2021 16:37

The most worrying thing is that she did not seem to realise she’d driven into you especially, if I’ve understood correctly, she had pulled forwards into you so you were directly in her line of sight? Yes, many of us have made stupid, embarrassing driving mistakes, but not realising you’ve driven into someone standing directly in front of you does seem to suggest something else might be in play.

I have known two high functioning alcoholics, both educated, well-spoken professionals and you would not have guessed were under the influence of alcohol.

AfterSchoolWorry · 28/04/2021 16:38

Crazy idiot.

Definitely report, she could have been drunk or on drugs, maybe that's why she didn't get out.

Get the dash cam footage before it's recorded over.

Molyka88 · 28/04/2021 16:38

Thanks everyone, I will definitely go and get the knee checked out for certain. Will wait for Dh to get home and head over there.

Will go and speak to the other parent tomorrow morning about the dash cam footage, Its a fairly small school so tracking both the witness and the driver won’t be too hard.
Will be contacting the police too, now I’ve calmed down a bit and read the replies I’m actually really angry.

Will you see her again tomorrow? Is there any chance she didn't know what had happened? Personally I would probably speak to her tomorrow to check she knows what happened and ask her to self-report as you intend to report the incident. She might have done this already...a criminal record could be very life changing if she fails to report so I'd want to make sure she understood what had happened first.....

Squidthing · 28/04/2021 16:39

Report it, she clearly wasn't paying attention.

Stickytreacle · 28/04/2021 16:40

A child at a local school was airlifted to hospital a few weeks ago, the driver accelerated into a parked van instead of hitting the brake, the van shunted forwards trapping the child between the van and car in front. I believe the driver is being prosecuted for dangerous driving. Please report and get checked out. I hope your knee isn't too badly damaged. Flowers

Reinventinganna · 28/04/2021 16:40

Get your knee checked.
Report to the police (sooner rather than later, don’t wait until tomorrow as drug and alcohol testing may be invalid by then) and the school.

Hope you are okay, I can imagine that you are quite shaken.

Theobear88 · 28/04/2021 16:41

That’s terrible! I’m sorry that happened to you OP. I’d definitely report that, that’s completely unacceptable

PurpleDaisies · 28/04/2021 16:41

The police will be better placed to do that. The op shouldn’t be trying to sort it out herself.
nancywhitehead · 28/04/2021 16:41

Pretty astonishing that this happened when you were stood literally right in front of her by the sounds of it. It's dangerous driving and needs to be reported - sounds like she is not really fit to be behind a wheel.

ginoclocksomewhere · 28/04/2021 16:41

Get your knee checked- it may be more damaged than it feels, and delaying treatment may affect recovery if it is.

Report to police. Get a crime reference number. Contact your insurance company.

Hope you're ok, please don't leave it.

RandomMess · 28/04/2021 16:44

You need to report it and claim on her insurance, unfortunately the damage to your knee could have long term impact such as pain etc.

The fact that she didn't realise she had done it is terrifying!!

BrownEyedGirl80 · 28/04/2021 16:45

You're more restrained that me op.I hope you find out who she is.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 28/04/2021 16:46

I also think there's a chance she wasn't insured or didn't have a licence.Youd be surprised at the amount of "normal" people who risk it

Thunderdonkey · 28/04/2021 16:47

She has actually committed an offence by leaving after an accident without exchanging details, or reporting it to the police, as you were injured. It is definitely worth reporting it to the police. Hope your leg is OK.

MoltenLasagne · 28/04/2021 16:47

Good to hear you're going to hospital and contacting the police.

Look after yourself, I'm not surprised you're starting to feel angry now but you're also likely to get upset and shaken once everything sinks in.

Xenia · 28/04/2021 16:49

You should also receive compensation and a personal injury solicitor can help and they will do it on a no win no fee basis.

Ihopeyourcakeisshit · 28/04/2021 16:50

Where there's blame, there's a claim. Hmm

thedancingbear · 28/04/2021 16:51

You need to report this to the police and seek legal advice, op.

The police will do precisely nothing, but you will need to have gone through the formality of informing them before civil action is a possibility.

gamerchick · 28/04/2021 16:51

I'm glad you're getting seen to and reporting it to the police. What if it had been your kid?

PurpleRainDancer · 28/04/2021 16:51

Police.
Hope you're ok.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 28/04/2021 16:53

@Ihopeyourcakeisshit

Where there's blame, there's a claim. Hmm
And in this case there should be a prosecution as well as a payout Biscuit
Tiktokersmiracle · 28/04/2021 16:53

I was reversed into in a similar way thought it was nothing, day later realised my wrist was very swollen, I had a fracture.
So definitely get that knee looked at as the nurse who looked at me told me shock kicks in and you don't realise how bad you've been hurt
And definitely report to the police. She left the scene of an accident she caused by dangerous driving. She was also so unaware she didn't immediately remove her car from you until you made her aware. Was she drunk?
She deserves her licence revoking. As you said, this was in the carpark of a child's nursery. Think how bad it could've been if it was a tiny kid?
