To be shocked at what’s just happened on the school run

Molyka88 · 28/04/2021 15:34

So today after picking DCs up from school/nursery a car that was parked up close behind my car put their car into accelerate instead of reverse and ended up pinning me between my rear bumper and their front bumper whilst I was putting bags etc in the boot.

Mum in question did not realise one of my legs was taking the brunt of this until I was shouting to tell her to reverse.
She did apologise at the time, but didn’t get out of the car to ask if I was ok or anything like that!

I’ve got home now and my knee already is swollen and starting to bruise.. I’m also thinking this could have been a much worse accident if this was DS stood in between the car.

Fortunately a parent came over to check if I was ok and he did catch the incident on his dash cam.
So would you put this down as an unfortunate accident or do anything about it? I’m not even sure who or if I would report it too.

Don't get sidetracked by the fact it happened at a school and that it could have been a child.

She hit your car and you and has injured you, it's a police matter, especially as she left the scene.

Call them now and give them the witness' details and contacts so they can supply the dash cam.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 28/04/2021 15:57

@NeverMetANiceOne

I would take the footage to the police, and you probably ought to go and get your knee checked out if you can. That's awful! Are you feeling OK, other than obviously shocked!
This! She could have broken your legs through her carelessness. Had a child come to speak to you, she could actually have killed them!
BrilliantBetty · 28/04/2021 15:57

What will the police do?

Tabitha005 · 28/04/2021 15:57

Echoing as others have said; this woman left the scene of an accident and needs reporting to the police. The fact she didn't even get out of the car to check whether you'd been injured is abysmal behaviour. You definitely need to get your knee checked out - she could have caused damage that may not be fully realised immediately.

themalamander · 28/04/2021 15:58

@BrilliantBetty

She hit someone and left the scene. That's 2 crimes she committed.

What will the police do?

Identify her and considered if she should be charged with an offence.

Lovemusic33 · 28/04/2021 15:58

First of all go and get your knee checked out.

I’m shocked that she didn’t get out the car to check on you, that’s shocking behaviour, sounds like she made a stupid error but she should have checked you were ok and given you her details.

Hullabaloo31 · 28/04/2021 15:59

I'm not one to say report usually either, but this definitely needs doing.I can't believe she didn't get out to check at the very least.

Molyka88 · 28/04/2021 16:01

Just to say thank you for all of your kind messages!

This did not happen in a school car park, this was on street about a minutes walk away.
The car in question had pulled up close behind me, with the engine still running just before I got back to my car, she must have been waiting for someone?
I can only assume she went forwards instead of reverse as she obviously did see me, I don’t know how she didn’t realise she had essentially drove into my legs Shock bit I did yell at her which she then did reverse.
I also walked over to her window to ask her if she was aware of that she had done, she then apologised and drove away.

Let’s hope for a better day tomorrow.

I would try and track her down tomorrow and raise the issue with her as I hate to involve the police in anything

What madness is this? She’s been involved in a road traffic accident in which someone was injured she ( the driver) has a legal responsibility to report to police. The fact that she didn’t even stop to check the OP to check she was OK and get her details would imply she won’t be doing that. If you’re driving a car you have a responsibility to know the law around these kinds of incidents.

sunshinesupermum · 28/04/2021 16:01

Definitely report it.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 28/04/2021 16:02

I agree with the previous posters - the fact she drove off, without making sure you were alright, or offering her insurance details makes this a hit and run. Ring the police.

HumunaHey · 28/04/2021 16:02

@MajorMujer

Report it to the police, it is driving without due care and attention, if she did the same to a child she could potentially kill them.
Agree. I'm shocked she didn't even bother to get out the car.
loulouljh · 28/04/2021 16:02

A friend of mine was very badly injured in similar circumstances. I think you should certainly get checked out and also maybe tell the police and your insurers?

OneRankSuperior · 28/04/2021 16:02

Unless she didn’t realise she hit you and thought you were just shouting a ‘hey watch out!’ kind of way - then it’s inexcusable not to have stopped.

Pleaseaddcaffine · 28/04/2021 16:04

My uncle lost his legs in an accident like this at low speed. Seriously I hope your okay but she could have seriously hurt someone.
I'd have been hysterically checking you were okay if I'd done that!

MangoMayhem · 28/04/2021 16:04

Report it urgently - if she didn't get out of the car she may have been drinking / drugged up.

LagneyandCasey · 28/04/2021 16:04

Any accident needs reporting to her insurance. If you have any issues with your knee then you'll be entitled to compensation from her insurance. She was very wrong to just drive off and not give you her details.

MangoMayhem · 28/04/2021 16:04

And it's a crush injury so you need to get yourself to A and E pronto.

PurpleDaisies · 28/04/2021 16:05

I also walked over to her window to ask her if she was aware of that she had done, she then apologised and drove away.

Playing Devil’s advocate, maybe the woman had no idea whether to swap details or who to report it to in the same way that the op didn’t really know what to do next.

That’s not to say that the op shouldn’t report it to the police, her insurance company and get checked out. Those are all sensible things to do now.

PurpleDaisies · 28/04/2021 16:05

@MangoMayhem

Report it urgently - if she didn't get out of the car she may have been drinking / drugged up.
Wow, that’s a leap.
sunflowersandbuttercups · 28/04/2021 16:05

@BrilliantBetty

What will the police do?
Hopefully a lot!

She has committed a crime. It's illegal to leave the scene of an accident without giving your details. She could also be charged with dangerous driving as OP has evidence (dashcam footage plus a witness) and an injury as a result of the accident.

harknesswitch · 28/04/2021 16:06

I would report it to the police and your insurance company. If you get issues with the knee and need anything doing to it you can't claim if you've not reported it. She really should have given you her insurance details.

If you're not happy reporting it to the police then I'd definitely speak to the school and contact her via the school to ask her for her insurance details. If she refuses then you need to definitely speak to the police.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 28/04/2021 16:07

Jesus! Police, get the details of the person with the dash cam

And get your knee checked out. Seriously, it's a fragile synovial joint and you must get it seen to, if only to ensure that there is no damage to the patella, ligaments etc.
