To be shocked at what’s just happened on the school run

Molyka88 · 28/04/2021 15:34

So today after picking DCs up from school/nursery a car that was parked up close behind my car put their car into accelerate instead of reverse and ended up pinning me between my rear bumper and their front bumper whilst I was putting bags etc in the boot.

Mum in question did not realise one of my legs was taking the brunt of this until I was shouting to tell her to reverse.
She did apologise at the time, but didn’t get out of the car to ask if I was ok or anything like that!

I’ve got home now and my knee already is swollen and starting to bruise.. I’m also thinking this could have been a much worse accident if this was DS stood in between the car.

Fortunately a parent came over to check if I was ok and he did catch the incident on his dash cam.
So would you put this down as an unfortunate accident or do anything about it? I’m not even sure who or if I would report it too.

If you're not happy reporting it to the police then I'd definitely speak to the school and contact her via the school to ask her for her insurance details.

I’d be amazed if the school facilitate that.

poppycat10 · 28/04/2021 16:07

@BrilliantBetty

What will the police do?
Nothing. I know of two hit and runs locally in the last few years - both on zebra crossings, with witnesses and with enough of an injury to go to hospital in at least one case and they did nothing at all.

I hope you are ok OP. Definitely get the knee checked out. Consider carefully if it's worth telling your own (car) insurer as you don't want your premium to go up (even if you have no claims, and it's not your fault, any incident increases your premium).

Normando91 · 28/04/2021 16:08

So you went to her window, told her she’d essentially pinned you to your car by the knees because of her reckless driving and all she done was say sorry and drive off? Did you say anything about it being ok at any point, that she would think it wasn’t serious?

Unless you told her you were fine and not to worry, I’d absolutely be reporting. She’s left the scene of essentially a hit and run. You could be a lot more injured than you currently think.

Youdontknowwhatyoureonabout · 28/04/2021 16:08

This did not happen in a school car park, this was on street about a minutes walk away

Residential or shops? There could be ring doorbells or cctv footage if the dashcam person didn’t get capture the ref.

JustAnotherOldMan · 28/04/2021 16:08

As others say, Police as that’s careless driving and leaving the scene.
Not sure about insurance company unless you car is damaged, but if you legal expenses cover, look at that if you can’t work for a while

Eyevorbig0ne · 28/04/2021 16:09

Report to police and school. If you can provide reg number, great.
If not, ask the dashcam parent if you can either share footage or if they're willing to be contacted by police etc.
I hope you feel better soon, sorry it happened to you. Can't believe she just f11cked off 🙄🙄🙄😢

MichelleScarn · 28/04/2021 16:09

@MangoMayhem

And it's a crush injury so you need to get yourself to A and E pronto.
Agree with this, get it looked at.
Unsuremover · 28/04/2021 16:09

@MangoMayhem

Report it urgently - if she didn't get out of the car she may have been drinking / drugged up.
That’s not totally unlikely. I know of almost exactly the same thing happening but with (what sounds like) a more serious injury and when it all came out in the wash she was drug user and had been high at the time of the accident.
andyoldlabour · 28/04/2021 16:10

Call the police, she should not have left the scene.
Careless driving at the very least.

emilyfrost · 28/04/2021 16:11

Definitely report to the police.

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 28/04/2021 16:12

Jesus OP, that's awful.

Agree you need to get your knee looked at urgently especially as any adrenaline which is now wearing off will have hidden some pain at the time thus meaning you have carried on through it.

Yes agree speak to the police and get hold of that dashcam footage. Whilst school won't have much sway over handling it they absolutely should be informed of what this stupid woman has done so they can potentially help find out who she is.

As for her nipping off because she was probably "mortified", well, of course she bloody well was! She will have no idea of how she could have injured you and could have killed a small child if they'd been there instead of you. Mortified or not, which I'm sure most perpetrators of a hit and run are as generally even idiots aren't total monsters, there needs to be a consequence.

Actually OP, I'm really quite angry for you.

I hope you get your knee looked at. Try and take it easy this evening. Thanks

Nothing. I know of two hit and runs locally in the last few years - both on zebra crossings, with witnesses and with enough of an injury to go to hospital in at least one case and they did nothing at all.

Even if they do nothing, it's an offence not to report the accident as no details were exchanged at the scene. OP should also report to her insurance company within 24 hours as otherwise she may not be able to claim for her injuries later.

diddl · 28/04/2021 16:13

Unfortunate accident my bloody arse!

She drove forwards instead of reversing & then bloody sat doing nothing whilst Op was pinned between 2 cars!

She shouldn't be driving!

KeyboardWorriers · 28/04/2021 16:13

Please go and get your knee checked out. The shock will probably mean you don't realise how bad it is. Also damage to knees can be lifelong so I would also definitely recommend lodging a claim.

crazylikechocolate · 28/04/2021 16:13

This happened to a friend many years ago, broke both his legs below the knee , terrible accident he was in hospital for months , make sure you get checked out , although it was an accident it was also dangerous driving and yes I would report it to the police

Lachimolala · 28/04/2021 16:13

I would report definitely, surely this is some kind of hit and run/leaving the scene of an accident type thing?

If that was a child she could killed them.

thelegohooverer · 28/04/2021 16:14

First priority is to get your knee properly checked out. There’s a lot going on with knees and you’re going to need yours for years yet, so you need to get it x-rayed and possibly an mri to identify the damage and get started on physio early for the best possible outcome.

Bring an ice pack with you cos you might be sitting around a while before you get seen.
You can phone the insurance and report the incident while you’re waiting in a&e.

bloodyhell19 · 28/04/2021 16:14

That's a hit and run. Take the footage to the police and report her then get yourself seen for injuries.

Molyka88 · 28/04/2021 16:15

The driver did say sorry two or three times, that was all. She did see, flustered, but obviously not enough to get out of the car Hmm

Fortunately this was witnessed, and a parent did come over to see if I was ok and said about his dash cam footage. He was parked almost opposite to our cars, looking on from the side so it would be quite clear to see I would assume.

OP posts:
Queenofthebrae · 28/04/2021 16:16

Definitely report to the police and get yourself checked out. Feel better soon.

fairydustandpixies · 28/04/2021 16:17

Hit and run. Report to the police straight away and also go to A&E - your poor knee! Get it checked out, don't waste time.

MissMaple82 · 28/04/2021 16:19

She could of been to shocked or embarrassed to get out the car. She's probably sat at home feeling terrible. Was she young? I once hit a parked car when I'd recently passed, I was only young and in complete panic I drive off intending to go back with my mum for moral support. I still to this day cringe over it. She could be feeling terrible but maybe unaware of how much she hurt you. I cant imagine police would do much though

sadpapercourtesan · 28/04/2021 16:19

Did you get contact details for the parent with the dash cam?

This is an appalling incident, OP, I can't believe she didn't get out of the car or check properly that you're OK - which you're not, you need to get that knee checked out properly. You could have meniscus or ligament damage which can be very serious and take a long time to heal (I've had two surgeries on mine - never piss about with knees, get it checked immediately)

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 28/04/2021 16:20

If your insurance include legal cover you could probably make a personal injury claim. Do it get it checked out, you may in the very least need some physiotherapy.

CleverCatty · 28/04/2021 16:20

@MajorMujer

Report it to the police, it is driving without due care and attention, if she did the same to a child she could potentially kill them.
This. agreed with if she did this to a child they could be potentially killed.
