Doyou care about Boris Johnson's constant lying?

My theory is that voters don't care.

I was amazed to see the Daily Mail seems to be leading the investigation - the headlines take up half the front page this morning. I saw this on the BBC review of the papers, just to be clear - I didn't buy the paper Grin

I would like to see more from Labour on policy, not on knocking Johnson, though. People just don't really care, as they already thought he was dishonest, in my opinion.

Fireflygal · 28/04/2021 09:42

I care but it seems many people don't. I suspect it's because they refuse to look at the details. The ventilators situation is a case on point. The most effective route would have been to talk to existing companies but he chose to DELAY the process by giving a tory donor a chance to make money.

At best he has very poor judgement. How can anyone think otherwise as he has constantly got decisions wrong? A few examples are lockdowns delayed, not firing Cummings (bet he regrets that!) track & trace. He is Captain Chaos. The vaccine success is not down to him but great leadership by the AZ team.

@milveycrohn

They ALL lie, except the prime minister's lies have (in my opinion) been more blatant than most. I don't totally understand the house thing, as I believe all PMs redecorate, and especially Tony Blair, who I seem to remember charged the tax payer. So not sure what's going on here. Regarding the 'bodies piling up', that's very interesting considering Boris Johnson had covid himself, and nearly died. As much as I have disliked many PMs, none gave so blatantly had affaires as much as Boris Johnson, though apparently John Major had an affaire with Edwina Curry think this was before he was Prime Minister. The constant shifting of the goalposts over Lockdown etc, must make many small businesses and especially pub landlords despair
It's the hiding it and lying about it. If he said x y and z are chipping in to do up our flat I think most people would roll their eyes at such expense. Pretending no one has funded you begs the question why? Have they been promised favours, is he calling in favours. Being open about it ends all that.
VaVaGloom · 28/04/2021 09:45

@DrRamsesEmerson

I care. I care that he lies to Parliament. I care that he thinks rules are for the little people. I care that corruption is becoming normal in our government (Jenrick ought to be in prison, not still a Secretary of State). I care that rule breaking has no consequences any more.

I've worked in Westminster for 20 years now. They really aren't all like that, but they will be if this carries on much longer - what's the point of honesty and playing by the rules if lying and cheating bring all the rewards.

It's a bit like doping in bike racing - it became endemic - those that didn't could see the advantage their competitors had and were forced to watch them win knowing they were cheats.

@Kendodd

My theory is that voters don't care.
I think it's obvious many don't care or he wouldn't have ended up leader of the party in the first place.

That said though, I think a lot of people vote Tory by default because there hasn't been a strong, viable alternative for the past few years, so it may be that even if people do disapprove of him, they still feel they can't bring themselves to vote for anyone else.

4cats2kids · 28/04/2021 09:45

Some politicians, of all parties, go into the job with a genuine desire to make, what they believe to be, positive changes. If we accept liars as the norm we create a dangerous situation. A little integrity is not too much to expect.

Notonthestairs · 28/04/2021 09:45

Yes I care. I don't appreciate being taken for a mug.

I don't think ALL politicians have such low standards and certainly don't think all Conservative MP's are corrupt liars selling access for wallpaper and drinks trolleys - it's just the current cabinet are making them look that way.

What's wrong with expecting honesty and integrity? Why shouldn't we expect better?

everybodysang · 28/04/2021 09:46

this is quite a scary thread. Yes, I care. Very much. His lying and the lying that surrounds him. I want him out.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 28/04/2021 09:46

Tbf, I don’t think he could fire Cummings. I think he’s well aware that Cummings has enough on him to land him in prison. Although Cummings also has the problem that some of it incriminates him too.

VaVaGloom · 28/04/2021 09:48

@countryatheart

I don't think he is lying.
@countryatheart what don't you think he is lying about?
QwertyGirly · 28/04/2021 09:48

Yes, people care. I care. I am totally appalled by the lies, the sleaze, the corruption,. By asking this question, you are simply trying to downplay the issue. Is that you, Laura Kuenssberg?

Now the AIBU is showing that 79% of people on this board do care. If what you propose is a 'theory', have you changed your mind yet?

Alonim · 28/04/2021 09:48

I care. I’m not at all surprised. Not one bit, but I very much care.

HerMammy · 28/04/2021 09:48

Tory voters don’t care, they fell for his bumbling fakery.
If a popular celebrity lied, assaulted his partner and made comments about bodies piled high, they’d be vilified and all contracts ended, yet the PM gets it all laughed off with a pat on the back.
None as blind, eh?

Onetoomuch · 28/04/2021 09:48

At one time successive scandals like this would ultimately have led to a vote of no confidence and a GE.
The electorate would customarily have rejected that party and voted in the opposition (as in the 90s). Nowadays they just say 'labour's as bad' and turn a blind eye. The apathy is frightening.
There's also a tribalism going on which prevents people from changing their minds. So leavers will stick to Boris whatever he does until of course the shitshow that is Brexit starts to manifest itself and hits them personally.

Doomsdayiscoming · 28/04/2021 09:49

Nope.

He’s an absolute lad. Got Brexit done. Left his wife for a new younger model, even if she is a bit of a snowflake tree hugger.

He has single handedly grabbed as many vaccine shots as he could and shoved them into our arms. He solved covid. What more do you want?

ExConstance · 28/04/2021 09:50

Yes, I care, and I'd like a good look at the flat which I suspect looks hideous.

HerMammy · 28/04/2021 09:51

@Doomsdayiscoming
Think you need a lie down, what a ridiculous comment, solved covid? with one of the highest death rates in the world? aye ok 🙄

MrsMackesy · 28/04/2021 09:53

Yes, I care. I had the good sense not to vote for him. Anyone who did vote for him can't complain because the writing was very clearly on the wall about his character long, long ago. The man lies and self serves as much as he breathes. He takes the population for fools and his voters let him.

Megan2018 · 28/04/2021 09:53

Everyone lies. I can't get that excited about it.

Peregrina · 28/04/2021 09:54

and some accusations from someone who had to go for a drive to check their eyesight to Barnard Castle who has sour grapes.

This just makes me laugh. Sour grapes? Memories are very short. Why, not quite a year ago, Johnson refused to sack him for the Barnard Castle trip, and allowed him to give an interview in the Downing Street rose garden. Tory MPs dutifully fell into line to offer their excuses for Cummings. They couldn't get enough of Cummings.

Parkerwhereareyou · 28/04/2021 09:54

Given his relationship history, he was v obviously a completely practised lier. I wouldn’t believe anything he said, of course not. He’s emotionally quite weak and pussy-whipped too.

But generally I think means well. Although apparently they’re ok going to make millions from Brexit etc.

whatistheworld · 28/04/2021 09:56

I care and he is unfit to be PM. I know people who have worked with him and he is bully, rude and arrogant. He has got to where he is by lying and having the brass head to never have any remorse for those lies. Its all a big game and we are the losers.
I actually hate him

minipie · 28/04/2021 09:58

I do care but it hasn’t changed my view of him, I always thought he was a turd.

MagpieSong · 28/04/2021 09:58

I care huge amounts. I’ve protested all my adult life (bar in covid where I’ve been shielding and pregnant) against people like him and am sick of the Tory government. I also care that several newspapers push views that are in line with Boris’ and teach people to think immigration is why they can’t get a job or that there’s no money to invest in the NHS when that’s simply not true. It’s sad and frustrating and angers me.

Zazazaz · 28/04/2021 09:58

I care deeply.

I don't understand why so much of the population think it is ok for him to behave like this. I accept that potentially many previous politicians left something to be desired. But this is dismantling the standards of public office right before our eyes, on a different scale altogether. It's corruption. It used to be a resigning issue. Now it's 'just Boris'.

I hate what this country is becoming.
