My theory is that voters don't care.

The mobile phone thing is shocking.

beachsidecafe · 30/04/2021 08:49

It is a witch hunt plain and simple, and most people know that. Blair and Brown spent many times over that amount, and the tax payer picked up the bill.

Cummings is gunning for Carrie, he is trying to paint her in her a very bad light. A really nasty campaign that makes me stomach curdle.

Meanwhile the rest of us are just getting on with life and couldn't give a damn about bloody home furnishings. I pity anyone that consider this a priority right now. BBC are giving it as much oxygen as possible, pathetic.

Nith · 30/04/2021 08:56

@beachsidecafe, you're wearing blinkers. Sure, people don't care about home furnishings in themselves. What they do care about is Tory donors paying for them in the expectation that they will get favours as a result, particularly given the very clear evidence that Johnson has been favouring his mates and Tory donors over and over again.with fat government contracts.

Bearnecessity · 30/04/2021 08:59

I think it is disgusting how Carrie is being treated by the media....front page photos in bikini, headlines.etc

Spot on. The problem is Cummings. Carrie has caused this by getting rid of him. He is an evil little man and I hope he fades into the background, he certainly has the appearance for it.

No they didn't because they kept within the 30k per year average spend.

You could be right but doesn't make DC's allegations wrong.

Its not about home furnishings, its about what does a donor get for his "donation" ?

The whole thing would go away if BJ just said "Yes i used donations but as soon as i realised it was a against the rules, i returned the donation... etc... i was too busy dealing with a Pandemic"

Viviennemary · 30/04/2021 09:01

I don't like Cummings. Or Carrie. They both have far too much influence.

Darker · 30/04/2021 09:04

BeachSideCafe what do you think we should care about, if not corruption?

Rich people already have more power than most of us - democracy is one of the few ways people like us can have influence. If a government is corrupt it is the media's duty to expose it, and ours, as voters, to pay attention and use our votes wisely.

If you read the evidence and think its a price worth paying then that's your choice but don't deny others the chance to know what's going on.

Peregrina · 30/04/2021 09:05

most of us sort of admire the Big Man.

Do we F*CK.

Entertaining - allowing the obscenity of doing up a property with someone else's money on wallpaper costing £840 a roll, when his Government voted against providing free school meals in the holidays and had to be shamed into it.

Entertaining - at least 127,000 Covid deaths, particularly in the early days when it ripped through Care homes but Johnson was too busy sorting out his divorce to attend meetings to sort it out (i.e. to do the job he was paid for.)

All I can say is that you must have a funny sense of humour.

the80sweregreat · 30/04/2021 09:06

Gordon brown didn't spend any money on the flats. The Blair's did , but within the yearly budgets I heard on the radio when someone tried to blame Labour for Boris Johnson's recent spending habits ( who haven't had a whiff of power for decades now)

Darker · 30/04/2021 09:08

I doubt Boris was thinking about Blair when he redecorated the flat.

DuncinToffee · 30/04/2021 09:09

Kendodd
If f this poll is anything to go by (I'm sure its not) 25% of voters don't care about corruption in government

Steven Swinford on twitter
Yougov poll for Times sees Tories extend lead over Labour to 11 points despite:

* Half of people saying they agree Tories are very sleazy

* 31% saying they consider Johnson less honest than other politicians

40% of those polled have favourable view of Johnson, 51% unfavourable

Peregrina · 30/04/2021 09:09

The Blairs came in for a lot of criticism for their lavish spending habits, even if it was their own money. I seem to recall that there was a fuss over buy to let flats that they owned in Bristol.

beachsidecafe · 30/04/2021 09:14

I think the polls this morning speak for themselves. Conservatives are actually increased their lead. No one really believes or cares about this BS. We have all got bigger things to worry about!! Seriously.

They have done a good job, most of us recognise that.

Sure we care but the majority do not, they had low expectations of Bojo and him lying and being corrupt is no big deal... he is seen, like Farage, as "one of us" & "we try to avoid tax, pay cash, fiddle our tax returns.. cheat on our partners, drink too much, lie & are over weight...just like good 'ole Boris....."

I used to think Johnsons many children from multiple women, his cheating, his incompetence on Covid, would remove the blinkers over peoples eyes but it hasn't.

His polling is higher than ever.

Maybe people think if a lying cheat like him can get to the top so can i?

Most of us recognise that? Do we, I don't know anyone who thinks they've done a good job, even people who were very keen on Boris 18 months ago.
beachsidecafe · 30/04/2021 09:18

Last night Michael Gove came out batting for the PM, stressing that previous PMs have splashed tens of thousands of pounds of taxpayers' cash on doing up the No10 flat how they fancied.

Ex-PM Tony Blair spent £73,000 in 1998/9, and another £55,000 between 2000 and 2001, he revealed.

And Gordon Brown blew another £35,000 on more upgrades, he added.

Mr Gove said: "The PM has spent his own money on refurbishing Downing Street. NOT the tax payers cash.

Lets be clear Brown DID spend many tens of thousands actually. So your pp are incorrect.

Peregrina · 30/04/2021 09:19

Cummings is gunning for Carrie, he is trying to paint her in her a very bad light.

In which case, she has given him plenty of ammunition: spending £840 on one roll of wallpaper, when people have to use food banks to feed their families makes her look spoilt and completely out of touch.

Thatcher, whom the Tories profess to admire, would most definitely not have countenanced such extravagance.

Darker · 30/04/2021 09:19

You may think that but plenty disagree.

They are tragic but numbers and integrity aren’t necessarily linked. They show an electorate that buys into propaganda- just like 1933 or an electorate that is itself morally corrupt or a very dim electorate that cants see how this reality is a huge issue that will impact on them.

A bit like all those fishing communities who are now seeing the realities of Brexit propaganda. Their communities face huge levels of unemployment and growing poverty. Meanwhile Norway sells us fish British used to be able to catch when part of EU.

beachsidecafe · 30/04/2021 09:20

What an utter cunt Boris Johnson is

What a crass and disgusting thing to say about anyone!

Seriously no one agrees with you. Look at the polls! Even with this stupid witch hunt the conservatives are still miles ahead. People are not stupid, they know they nasty campaign to undermine someone when they see it.

The vaccine roll out has been a total success, we are coming out of lockdown that is all people really care about. Not the wallpaper folks.

LemonRoses · 30/04/2021 09:21

What’s are those bigger worries exactly? What is bigger than a corrupt government and impact on the most vulnerable?

ancientgran · 30/04/2021 09:21

Did they try and spend money on the sly, raising it in a way that was potentially illegal? I've said it before but I don't care if they want to spend millions on Downing St as long as it is honest, above board and we all get to do a critique of the "nightmare" they create.

If Cummings has got dirt on Johnson then we should know what it is, if Johnson is squeaky clean he has nothing to worry about.

He needs to just answer the question, "Who paid initially for the renovations at the flat." I don't actually think renovations is really the right word but that is what is being said, it makes it sound like they moved into a doer upper like you'd see on Homes Under the Hammer.
