Doyou care about Boris Johnson's constant lying?

My theory is that voters don't care.

OP posts:
Peregrina · 29/04/2021 08:20

They just might begin to care. Most of us can't get our heads around £37 billion for the failed track and trace. But we most certainly can get our heads around £840 for a roll of wallpaper? What sort of mug pays that money? Is it gold plated? (Apparently yes.)

Which mug pays, well preferably the taxpayer, but if not, Tory donors on the QT, but then they will expect something in return.

lemmein · 29/04/2021 08:28

I care that people don't care!

What low expectations we have in this country. Obedient little serfs.

Darker · 29/04/2021 08:31

The issue of Boris and his sex life is that he gets compromised. He seems to be attracted to women who involve themselves in his political life and he makes decisions based on what they want, including who he employs, and he is prepared to break the rules to please them. It’s like a silly game. But it’s extremely dangerous. Any hostile country could entrap him with sex because he has no self control.

C8H10N4O2 · 29/04/2021 08:31

I don't totally understand the house thing, as I believe all PMs redecorate, and especially Tony Blair, who I seem to remember charged the tax payer

The flat belongs to the government/nation and there is a 30K per year allowance for refurb and redecoration. Previous incumbents all managed to stay within the 30K or pay any surplus themselves - even the Camerons.

The point is not the 30K to which Johnson was entitled but who funded the rest of the nearly 200K cost of tarting the place up into the migraine palace. Especially considering it was hardly in dire need of a major refurb.

In particular his insistence that they had to do it because they had a baby on the way is pretty insulting to the vast majority of parents who manage to struggle through sticking to much tinier budgets.

Peregrina · 29/04/2021 08:38

Any hostile country could entrap him with sex because he has no self control.

Exactly so. Anyone who was Positively Vetted for a sensitive Government job will know how they go into your background to make sure that there is nothing which can compromise you.

Onetoomuch · 29/04/2021 08:41

@TomPinch don't remember the guppygate scandal then ? Maybe have a look into it .......

Darker · 29/04/2021 08:42

Not just a foreign country either. Any faction that wants to get access to the government.

Peregrina · 29/04/2021 08:45

But being blackmailed by a potentially hostile foreign Government would be much more serious.

Also being made a laughing stock. Governments around the world won't be afraid to apply ridicule when it suits them.

MaMaLa321 · 29/04/2021 08:47

I don't like it, and I don't like him, but he was voted in to get Brexit out the way, and he has done that, in the eyes of most of the electorate, IMO.
The government has also rolled out a successful vaccination campaign.

I do not believe that this alleged corruption will weigh heavily in voters minds at the moment.

It might be different if any other party was attractive, but they're not - just check the polls.

Darker · 29/04/2021 08:48

Johnson is a security risk.

MaMaLa321 · 29/04/2021 08:50

I really can't be bothered about redecorating bills, and I think others have got more important things on their minds.
This kind of thing seems to come up all the time - remember the scandal about decorating Holyrood, and Lord Irvine's wallpaper?
It all smacks of desperation from an Opposition that can't land any punches on more serious subjects.

ancientgran · 29/04/2021 08:51

I read that Rishi Sunak's department have said he has decorated his flat at No 10 and paid all of it himself.

That won't do much for neighbourly relationships in Downing St. Risk 1 Boris 0.

ancientgran · 29/04/2021 08:52

Ricki 1 Boris 0. Don't know where the Risk came from.

I couldn't care less about his wallpaper or if he has a solid gold loo seat. I do care about the fact that he is accused of trying to get it all paid for illegally. I think it is telling that he and his gang keep saying he has paid for it but won't say he paid from the start.

If it wasn't an issue why isn't he open and honest about it?

CrotchetyQuaver · 29/04/2021 08:57

Now is a time we need political stability.
I don't care a great deal for Johnson but still feel he's the best of a bad bunch. I don't see anyone up to the job in any of the other parties.
Maybe there was a mistake maybe not. If he's now put his hand in his pocket and paid for it all as he claims, that seems all right to me.

It did look very dreary in the footage they show of when Teresa May was PM. I'd love to see what he looks like now even if I do think £200k on decorations for what is effectively a rental is outrageous

mustlovegin · 29/04/2021 08:59

Who believes this nonsense? A degree of scepticism is always healthy

That might have been OK if he'd put his hands up and said, "Sorry, got that one wrong but I've put it right now." But he hasn't done that has he, he's just kept digging.

I think we should have some before and after photos and have a poll to judge. I mean if they are rude enough to comment on TMs decorations why can't we have the opportunity to judge thiers?

I don't think anyone has said he has a solid gold loo seat. I was giving an example of how little I care what they have done just the way they have gone about it.
mustlovegin · 29/04/2021 09:01

Yes. And a few are trying very hard to jeopardise this, without any regard for possible consequences.

Actually the fact you needed to comment on that says an awful lot.
DuncinToffee · 29/04/2021 09:03

It's depressing that people care so little about accountability. Just because you vote for someone doesn't mean that you can stop holding them to account.

And yes we should know who paid the initial money for the refurbishment, the fact that this is such a secret is very worrying.

derxa · 29/04/2021 09:04

@Empressofthemundane

I don’t pay much attention to the fibber jabber that comes out of his mouth. I don’t care if he did use crass language during a debate amongst ministers regarding lockdown. I don’t give a shit about his wallpaper or who paid for it.

I am pleased with the vaccine strategy and rollout.
I am watching progress on the Australia trade deal.
I am alarmed regarding Northern Ireland.

I’m watching for results and not listening too closely.

I agree
the80sweregreat · 29/04/2021 09:04

Boris Johnson insisted three times that he paid the difference between the allowance they can claim of 30 k ( which is a bit of a scandal in itself but it is the rules ) and the actual total it came to. He was clearly rattled yesterday. If he has nothing to hide then the figures should be published and made clear who helped to settle the final Bill and his bank statements showing him paying it off. I bet we won't though.
The new media room cost millions too ( during a pandemic when the other room seemed to work fine)
The vaccine programme is the Tories saving grace.
People are more worried about other things and the polls show this.
My Tory voting neighbours told me the other day that Boris has ' done a good job' and that is echoed in most places apart from Mumsnet. (My Tory voting family will all say the same I'm sure once I can see them all safely)
( I don't think he has personally , but then I'm not a Tory! I remember the other cock ups people have forgotten)
There are pics online of the rooms ( daily Mail had them up yesterday)
Looked awful but then I only shop at b and q for paint and paper and nobody gives me 30 k to do up my home.

Clydesider · 29/04/2021 09:05

I think he's an appalling, unprincipled, selfish man and I really can't understand why he's so popular. He's our very own Trump and I'm ashamed of this nation at times for putting him in 10 Downing Street.

Peregrina · 29/04/2021 09:10

But I heard Tories declare that they thought May was doing a good job, until she wasn't. Ditto with Cameron, who went and let the side down.

Johnson will be undone at some stage, probably by his own actions, but if not by 'events, dear boy, events', and then he will have few friends.
