My theory is that voters don't care.

He has made overtly racist comments

I don't think much of left-wing MPs who repeat 'racist' comments made 20/30 years ago to score cheap political points (that includes several members of Keir Starmer's front bench). Either the comments are racist or they are not - I wouldn't keep repeating them myself if I thought they were causing offence just to score points.

He was recorded on tape agreeing to have a journalist beaten up.

He was recorded 'humouring' a friend as far as I could tell. Did he supply the address of the journalist? I know he wasn't beaten up.

splatted £1 billion up the wall on vanity projects as London Mayor.

I don't know how much Boris Johnson spent on 'projects' but he was a popular London Mayor and I really enjoyed my ride on The Emirates Air Line - which apparently takes as much in fares each year as it costs to run.

He has allowed an unelected person (Cummings) to make major government decisions.

How do you know? Was Alastair Campbell elected when he worked for Tony Blair?

He was sacked from his previous job for lying.

John Major wasn't caught lying to his wife and colleagues - we found out later.

His judgement in spending so much on a Downing St refurb in a recession is very telling

When Andrew Marr asked Johnson whether there will there be tariffs and checks on goods moving from Northern Ireland into Great Britain after Brexit the prime minister replied “absolutely not”. Lies.

Boris Johnson is claiming that the Brexit withdrawal agreement will let Britain take full control of its fishing waters back from the EU. Lies which convinced many fishermen to vote for brexit.

Boris Johnson insisted to Andrew Marr that the Conservatives were building 40 new hospitals. He went on to clarify his claim by saying “We are putting in the seed money for 40 new hospitals”, and that due to “decisions taken by this government” there will be 40 more hospitals in “10 years time.” Total bollocks, repeated several times.

“One of the reasons we’re having this election is because we have a Queen’s speech that was blocked by parliament. Absolute bullshit.

The prime minister argued that the Conservative Party’s plans for the NHS include the biggest increase in funding in living memory, a figure of £34 billion. Again he repeats this lie which has been totally disproved.

“If anybody is convicted, if anybody is done for Islamophobia, or any other prejudice or discrimination in the Conservative Party they are out first bounce” My local tory mp is a racist bigot who retweets Tommy Robinson and has never faced disciplinary action. He frequently shares racist and anti Semitic stuff.

“We will certainly make sure that the A&E in Telford is kept open”. Matt Hancock has now downgraded it. I’m sure Telford residents care about this lie from Boris.

“20,000 more police are operating on our streets to fight crime and bring crime down” Simply not true.

The UK’s corporation tax is “already the lowest in Europe. Again not true.

“If somebody asks you to [fill in a form], tell them to ring up the prime minister, and I will direct them to throw that form in the bin”. This was a lie regarding NI border post brexit.

“It was this Conservative government that tackled the debt and the deficit left by the last Labour government”. When he said this the U.K. debt had actually doubled...this was before covid so he can’t blame that.

“I didn’t say” police money was being “spaffed up the wall” on historic child sex abuse investigations . He had said this in a radio interview six months earlier and then bare faced lied.

I could go on and on posting more and more lists, there’s hundreds of such examples. The man is a disgrace.

And the journalist who was at the centre of the beating up phone call didn’t think it was funny. It worried him enough to be cautious when answering the door when he found out about it. He felt it was a serious conversation. Of course Boris will lie and say it was all a joke,

beginningoftheend · 28/04/2021 20:56

Yes I absolutely do care.

They said American voters didn't care about Trump's behaviour too.

Peregrina · 28/04/2021 20:59

CovidCorvid - you are wasting your time trying to persuade Clavinova - she seems to think the sun shines out of Johnson's arse.

When the Tory party decide that he's become a liability and ditch him, I suspect she will go mighty quiet. It will be difficult to pretend that she never stuck up for him because there are too many posts of her doing just that.

areallthenamesusedup · 28/04/2021 20:59

Yes I care. It is like when Trump was in power. It sends a message out that ethics and character are not important.

He has been caught out telling untruths time and time again.

CovidCorvid · 28/04/2021 20:59

fb.watch/59u2VAx7qa/

It doesn’t sound like a joke to me.

Sinthie · 28/04/2021 21:02

He’s repulsive and a disgrace. I care.

SpiderinaWingMirror · 28/04/2021 21:03

I do think he has radically misjudged public mood though.
He is given 30k for refurbishment of flat.
He spent 200k and at least had a good go at getting someone else to pay for it.
I cant actually visualise spending the cost of what many people homes cost redecorating a flat. And as a rich person, trying to get someone else to pay for his solid gold toilet is bit much.
Reminds me of duck houses and meats.

Marinated · 28/04/2021 21:08

Voted yanbu because your initial post which I based by vote on was 'my theory is voters don't care' and I agreed with that. I didn't scroll down to see the options. My bad and deduct a yanbu from the tally!

the80sweregreat · 28/04/2021 21:11

I care about how awful out PM is , his lies are the tip of the iceberg.
The sad thing is though that if there was a general election in May the Tories would still win and this is why I can't get too worked up about it all to be honest. For every pound spent on that terrible flat makeover someone will come up with the money spent by Labour in the past for something or mention the money spent on their ' spin doctors' and it goes on and on. Tit for tat.
People will always make excuses for them and him.
Sir Kier Starmer isn't a good opposition leader and people are still suspicious of the left and their policies. The sun and Mail might be having a dig at Boris now, but their allegiance will always be Tory and this is who people follow and believe at the end of the day.
The vaccine roll out and it's success has saved them a lot of face too.
I've never voted Tory and never will but I do fear we will be stuck with them for a long time yet.

Darker · 28/04/2021 21:13

Agree @SpiderinaWingMirror. Most of us can't relate to spending billions on Test and Trace or sourcing ventilators or the intricacies of Northern Ireland policy but we can all understand that £30k is more than enough to sort out a flat and that trying to get other people to pay for luxuries you can't afford is cheeky fuckery of the highest order.

Ikeameatballs · 28/04/2021 21:16

I care.

Interestingly DP, who has been a Boris fan despite his failings so far, thinks that the flat refurbishment is a bridge too far. His conclusion now is that Boris is simply stupid and he’s been carried by “advisors”.

londongram · 28/04/2021 21:17

Agree *@SpiderinaWingMirror*. So basic - I really had hoped most people could get their heads around these things - maybe Brexit voters were totally thick after all!
ichundich · 28/04/2021 21:19

I care, that's why I didn't vote for him and never would. Think enough people will though unfortunately.

StoneofDestiny · 28/04/2021 21:28

Asked about the politician’s claim the conversation was a joke, he replied: “I didn’t treat it as a joke. That’s why I warned my wife to be careful about who she answered the door to. I took it seriously at the time and it concerned me. I was worried, certainly worried enough to put my wife on a warning.”

During the call, Johnson told Guppy he had tried four contacts to obtain the reporter’s details but was fearful his role in the plot would be uncovered. Guppy told him: “I am telling you something, Boris, this guy has got my blood up, all right, and there is nothing which I won’t do to get my revenge. It’s as simple as that.”

It was not a joke and the journalist did not take it as a joke!

Darker · 28/04/2021 21:29

The problem is that some people interpret virtually all opposition questions as political point-scoring, focusing on who said it rather than what is being said.

Politics is messy. Sometimes people have to tow the party line, or say stuff that's not true in public (e.g. that we don't talk to terrorists) because its expedient to do so. No party is immune. So there will always be dirt to be dug up.

Sadly it seems hard to find truly objective reporting.

StoneofDestiny · 28/04/2021 21:31

From Business Insider:

Boris Johnson has a long record of controversial comments about women, gay people and ethnic minorities.
He has called gay men "bumboys," and compared Muslim women to "letterboxes."
In one column he labeled black Africans "piccaninnies" with "watermelon smiles."
He suggested that Malaysian women only go to university "to find men to marry."

And this is our PM. God help us.

DateLoaf · 28/04/2021 21:36

He’s not got the personal integrity for high office. I do care.

StoneofDestiny · 28/04/2021 21:48

Vanity Projects as Mayor

Garden Bridge £52 Million
New Routemaster £321.6 Million
Emirates Air Line £24 million
Water Cannon £323.000
Hire Bikes £225 Million
Estuary Airport £5.2 Million
Arselot Mittal Orbit £6.1 Million

So many complete and utter failures. Money no object.

KinseyWinsey · 28/04/2021 21:52

Eddie Mair nailed him years ago........

StoneofDestiny · 28/04/2021 21:54

Yes - a lot of people been taken for a ride by Johnson.

By the way - it's the worlds most expensive cable car and at £9.40 an adult return, it's nothing but a tourist attraction. At that price, you should have enjoyed the ride.

Userg1234 · 28/04/2021 21:58

No...why do Labour attack this small things but haven't come up with a single policy in over a year...why haven't they gone full tilt on the corrupt Liverpool Labour councillors if they are so anti sleaze?
