My theory is that voters don't care.

OP posts:
weltenbummler · 28/04/2021 13:02

and then there is Archbishop Welby saying we must not be too hard on politicians and its our fault because we have raised standards... Really? should we teach our kids that lying is bad unless you are a politician? I despair!
From BBC website:www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-56846908
During an interview ... Archbishop Welby said it was important to hold politicians to moral standards.

But he added: "If you're going to raise standards, you need to have a strong ethic of forgiveness and compassion and understanding,

"We have raised our standards and raised our standards and of course it's not right to help out your chums or lobby inappropriately or whatever it happens to be."

"But the standards now are at a level that no 19th Century politician would have survived for one week.

"So, it's not that morality has disappeared; it's that morality has got much more sting and bite than it ever used to."

HerLadySheep · 28/04/2021 13:07

Of course I care! If your children lied like he does would you just ignore it or tackle it?
I honestly think he is a compulsive liar and no longer actually recognises when he is lying, which is basically when he opens his mouth.
He is a national disgrace and an embarrassment, he is Trump with bad a blonde haircut, why can't people see this?

HOkieCOkie · 28/04/2021 13:08

He’s a political figure, they are professional truth stretchers. I’ll take Boris over tony Blair and his lies any day.

luckylavender · 28/04/2021 13:09

I care. I find him totally embarrassing.

Darker · 28/04/2021 13:11

Sometimes I wonder if party politics is even worth the grief. I'd honestly rather the country was run by competent professionals than by popularity contest winners.

That is what the Civil Service is for. The same Civil Service this government is set on undermining.

See also lawyers, scientists etc.

DynamoKev · 28/04/2021 13:11

@WarwickHunt

I don't mind. He has a track record of lying throughout his career. It was well known when her was elected. People have accepted it.
I haven't accepted it.
Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 28/04/2021 13:13

Having now seen both Trump and Johnson in the position of world leaders, I can only assume that most voters genuinely don't care how corrupt and venal their politicians are.

I'd find it hard to fit a fag paper between those two.
Peregrina · 28/04/2021 13:13

Boris Johnson isn't a good public speaker. It's all piffle piffle, waffle waffle.

Bearnecessity · 28/04/2021 13:17

If Labour had been in charge when the pandemic hit this country would be on its knees....the idea they could have done ...

a better Track and Trace...
managed the economy..
arranged a world beating vaccination programme..

or anything-else, Labour are living in cloud cuckoo land. They will never get to power because they can't organise themselves let alone the country.

The tories are far from perfect and yes Boris will not last because PMs don't...fact. But all things considered nobody in their right mind would vote Labour in...and there are no viable alternatives...

Pottedpalm · 28/04/2021 13:17

Yep; this in spades.

newnortherner111 · 28/04/2021 13:20

Sadly too many people don't care. And at least 10,000 people don't have the choice, as they have died from the pandemic and would not have done had Mr Johnson acted promptly in March 2020 and late September 2020.

Except that in each case, more of the population voted against Trump and Boris than in favour of them. That gives me some hope, even if the UK and USA have the stupidest electoral systems in the world.

What a ridiculous load of tosh.

None of that will male Boris tell the truth either.

Could you describe to us how one could have devised a worse Track and Trace system?
BigPyjamas · 28/04/2021 13:28

Yes I care. I've always been concerned about his lack of integrity, his history of lying, the murkiness surrounding him.

However do I think now is the time for an election, no. Can I see any other credible leadership option within the party? Questionable, Rishi perhaps, but only at a push.

I want Boris out, can't stand the man, but would be cautious about what we are replacing him with.

Bicnod · 28/04/2021 13:28

I care. He's a horribly entitled man who thinks he can do whatever he wants and get away with it. This has worked for him so far but I sincerely hope it won't work forever.

newnortherner111 · 28/04/2021 13:30

Comparing Mr Johnson to the Labour Party is not the real test. You should compare him with an alternative Conservative leader. For all their many faults none of the other ten candidates would lie as much, and all have some moral values.

movingstars · 28/04/2021 13:33

@Overdueanamechange

No I don't care. I'm more interested in actions than words behind closed doors. I'm not interested in how much his flat cost to refurb, as long as the tax payer doesn't have to pay it. I don't care what deal he made with Dyson to get life saving equipment. I'm not interested in who he snagged on the family sofa.
My sentiments exactly!

More worried that certain "king makers" are playing out their long term game.

How did Labour behave when they were last in power?

Rishi is far worse than Boris. He hasn't a hope of becoming Tory leader as he's lost the votes of the 3 million self employed he excluded from the covid support and refuses to correct his mistakes. He's just a slick PR machine with absolutely no substance.

Rishi has lied and doesn't have any moral values, otherwise he'd have helped, rather than lied about, the 3 million excluded.
Peregrina · 28/04/2021 13:37

Blair is now history though and the good work he did helping to negotiate the Good Friday Agreement was rather badly negated by his declaring war on Iraq.

Ah, that makes it alright then, because someone else has been sleazy as well.

Silvergreen · 28/04/2021 13:39

Well the Tories have already said that the public are too thick to understand the various fronts Johnson is currently trying to defend; and it looks like they're probably right.
