to be annoyed by people at work consistently misspelling my name?

I have a non-English name that has two common spellings depending on what part of the world it is used in (it is spelled differently in Portugal for example vs South America). I am getting seriously fed up of people I encounter through work misspelling it. Let's say for argument's sake that it's Ana - I consistently get back Anna. I write "Dear X, bla bla bla, Kind regards Ana" and I get back "Dear Anna". I don't mind so much if it is people I haven't had contact with before (though I still think how difficult is it to check the name of the person who has just emailed you) but when it is colleagues I have worked with for 4+ years I just think it is so rude! I point it out and it still happens.

I know it's really petty. AIBU?
@SchrodingersImmigrant lol that reminds me, when I got naturalised, I had to pay £60 for 5 minutes of a solicitor’s time to confirm I can speak English. The man spoke in broken English himself & after I left I realised he copied my name wrong from my passport so I had to go back & get a new form filled in. Absolutely ridiculous.
🤦🤦🤦🤦

TBA if I knew it wound you up I'd do it all the more often, I'm very childish

*Maybe annoying but I think YABU.

When many people cannot remember something like this it is usually because something makes it difficult for them to remember. Like, if you see car accidents keep happening in the same place, probably something to do with driving conditions in that spot.

I have a name that has about six common, traditional spellings. No one gets it right. Just let it go.*

That’s why one asks, go by what is written, and/or ask if what is written is correct especially if you have some condition that can make such things difficult, otherwise it comes off as lazy, rude, and/or incompetent if someone can’t do something so simple.

Part of my job is to write people’s information down and has been in other jobs so I double check even with the common names. I sometimes mix numbers and letters up in the wrong order so double/triple check myself. I’ve had people thank me for asking/checking because others haven’t and said people don’t get the information they need or have to contact again because they needed it for something important and can’t access what they need due to not writing it down properly.

My mother’s maiden name is constantly misspelled and it quickly stopped when she pointed out that she wasn’t paying anyone who couldn’t get a three-letter surname right and legally she wouldn’t have to since that wasn’t her name.

I know a Hannah, who has her name in her email address, and still gets the odd Hanna. So it happens with common British names too!

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 29/04/2021 10:40

My name gets misspelled a lot

I just can't seem to find the energy to care about I. So what 🤷‍♀️

@Theglassmakerofmurano

It’s got nothing to do with being foreign. My own family member and friends can’t even spell my child’s name properly. It has three letters. This has gone on for over 20 years.
Why dismiss other people's experiences? No one said it doesn't happen to common names.

Many petty things annoy me, it doesn't mean I go round in a permanent state of being enraged.

I simply find it rude and disrespectful when someone responding to an email from me - in which my name is clearly in the "from field", at the end of the email, AND in my signature - cannot manage to spell my name correctly.

Other things annoy others which don't annoy me. I'm not bothered by the sound of other people eating, for instance, which seems to send a lot of people on MN into a frenzy.

I'm not going to report them to HR or shout at them or spend my whole day feeling annoyed about it! It is just an irritating thing that I fancied starting a thread about.

No it's not petty. I have a first name spelled two ways too and more recently my last name has become more popular and common as a first name (it is uncommon as a last name) so I get called that too, as the mis-spelling of my first name is also a (somewhat uncommon) last name. All in all it winds me up, my name - with correct spelling - is in my email signature.

Londonmummy66 · 29/04/2021 17:48

I sympathise - DH's family are originally from Alsace and slightly altered their surname to make it look a bit more French and a bit less German but kept the original pronunciation. It is often misspelt by anyone who speaks German.

I was once corrected on how to pronounce it (now my surname too) by a stroppy BA check in hostess at Vienna airport.

Dublincailin · 29/04/2021 20:12

My name is shortened, prounced wrong, spelt wrong. My manager is guilty of mid spelling my name yet his name is spelt differently and I consistently spell it correctly out of respect

Constantly told you don't sound foreign, where did you get that name? That name is too hard I going to call you whatever.

Its the renaming me that gets my goat.
