to be annoyed by people at work consistently misspelling my name?

I have a non-English name that has two common spellings depending on what part of the world it is used in (it is spelled differently in Portugal for example vs South America). I am getting seriously fed up of people I encounter through work misspelling it. Let's say for argument's sake that it's Ana - I consistently get back Anna. I write "Dear X, bla bla bla, Kind regards Ana" and I get back "Dear Anna". I don't mind so much if it is people I haven't had contact with before (though I still think how difficult is it to check the name of the person who has just emailed you) but when it is colleagues I have worked with for 4+ years I just think it is so rude! I point it out and it still happens.

I know it's really petty. AIBU?

Just misspell their names every time it happens.

HeadNorth · 27/04/2021 12:41

My name commonly ends in 'y' but my version ends in 'ie'. So often spelt wrong, not just work emails but also cards from relatives who have known me all my life. I made a conscious decision to shake it off - who cares, really? As the saying goes, you can call me what you like as long as you don't call me late to dinner.

Sparrowcrane · 27/04/2021 12:47

Just would like to add mispronunciation to this or being called a completely different name altogether - some people must be dyslexic Grin. On the other hand, although I normally take care with my typing with unusual names , I have misspelled names a couple of times to my horror, followed with an apology.

MadisonAvenue · 27/04/2021 12:47

YANBU. It’s our surname that we have problems with. It’s an Irish surname and isn’t unusual but people rarely spell it correctly and even when you correct them and spell it out for them they frequently rush ahead and spell it how they think it should be.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 27/04/2021 12:50

It's call 'spell checker'. I'm guessing your name isn't in there.

It is at the top and bottom of the emails though. It's not difficult. It is quite disrespectful tho

Heyha · 27/04/2021 12:51

Totally agree. I have a password at school that the dimwit running the system at the time managed to spell my name in wrongly. No option to change it apparently (secure system). Pisses me off every time I have to log in. Oh and also got my email address wrong so I didn't get notifications from it for months. Managed to fix that now.
I half think she did it on purpose, she was a petty cow.

stackemhigh · 27/04/2021 12:51

YANBU, I bet you they wouldn't make this mistake if they were emailing the CEO.

If you've corrected them and they've ignored it, just start mispelling their name too. They hate that.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 27/04/2021 12:51

Bet you all these people have somewhere on a cv how detail oriented they are😂

I bet they would change it for the head teacher. Kick up a fuss.

Happens to me all the time. I just let it pass by. There's several different spellings to my name all pronounced the same. Even my own grandparents couldn't get the right one. I just figure they've got plenty going on in their brains the correct spelling of my name for me and the correct spelling for the other people they know who share my name aren't and shouldn't be too priority.
So long as they don't call me Geoff its fine

WeatherwaxOn · 27/04/2021 13:03

I used to get people spelling my name wrongly all the time. When I corrected them they'd ask if I was sure it was the right spelling.
As I don't like the fill version, I now use a shortened version. Occasionally people spell that wrong too.

Having said all that, at the time I was at school, we had a lot of Michaels in the year group
One of them couldn't spell it and wrote it Micheal. Bit concerning that he couldn't spell his own name correctly.

Estasala · 27/04/2021 13:11

Sometimes autocorrect changes it.

BiBabbles · 27/04/2021 13:28

I wonder if it makes difference to how people feel about it if there are similar names/spelling variations.

That does seem to be the pattern, and it's true between my spouse - who has a name with a variety of spellings and it rarely bothers him - and me, no other ways to spell my name, but it's one letter off a few more common English names.

For us, I think it's in part how people react to being corrected - he just gets a casual 'okay' maybe because people are used to multiple spellings, while I tend to get people who go on about how difficult it is for them to remember, that they'll never get that, get told I'm wrong or act like my name is such a bother to them.

It's call 'spell checker'. I'm guessing your name isn't in there.

All spellcheckers and autocorrects I've seen do try to alter my name to a masculine English name that's a lot more like mine than the names people try to give me. I actually wouldn't mind that so much, but it's never happened.

possumgoddess · 27/04/2021 14:47

Not only do I get my name spelled wrong ALL the time, but I also get people shortening it and then spelling that wrong too! My name is at the bottom all my emails and it is spelled corrected my on my organisation's address list. Just get it right!

ViciousJackdaw · 27/04/2021 15:29

I have a Gaelic name and not one of the nice ones either. I gave up on it a long time ago. My initial sounds like it could be a complete name and that is how I'm generally referred to.

MrsJackSpratt · 27/04/2021 15:34

My first name and surname are both quite boringly british, my first name is very common and simple.

People are always spelling them wrong! I regularly get called by my surname for some strange reason (it's not similar to any first name I have come across).

Re nurses and other healthcare professionals commenting on a name. It's small talk. They're being nice. try seeing 40+ people a day and having to make small talk. A nice, unusual name will be used for small talk. They're saying it because it's unusual and nice.

I gave my son a very very simple, 3 letter name. No one could possible get it wrong.. but oh, they do!

viques · 27/04/2021 15:39

@Elbels

My name is more typically spelt with an ie ending but I have y. I always get replies to my email referring to me as ie which makes me slightly worried that they can't read but doesn't bother me overall.
I see your pain. Mine has a variety of possible last letters, I have always used the vanilla one. But for some reason no one else does when they write my name, even , as you say, when they are replying to emails that have my spelling clearly written.
MrsJackSpratt · 27/04/2021 15:42

I am involved in a youth activity. We have three children with their name spelled the same, but pronounced three different ways. When trying to to remember the names of approx 120 kids, trying to remember which one of these three pronounces it each way is is a NIGHTMARE. One of the mothers gets arsey about it.. but she is welcome to come volunteer her time with the group and try and remember all the kids names if she likes. Obviously, she chooses not to.

goldierocks · 27/04/2021 15:55

I think quite a few of these cases could be down to modern technology.

Our email system auto-spell-checks every outgoing email. The computer dictionary learns/adds words over time. Unfortunately although the setting which lets you review spellings is set to 'manual', it's ignored on the server-side and obvious mistakes are changed (adn to and, teh to the, that sought of thing).

I spotted the problem when I sent an email to two of my colleagues and I know I typed their names properly (my version was in my 'sent items' folder). I'd typed Asish & Rado, their version said Hashish and Radio Shock. It also changed Rhian to Rhino.

I'm still talking to my IT department to get this 'feature' removed.

wombatspoopcubes · 27/04/2021 16:00

If it's colleagues I'd start doing something similar back till they get it. I called a female colleague Eric till she properly learned my name.

Dazedandconfused2021 · 27/04/2021 16:02

My name is an English name but more commonly associated with people much older than me. People call me by the wrong name all the time and it especially annoys me on emails. Say my name is Marjorie they call me Melissa, Melanie, etc. The most annoying is when they shorten the wrong name eg calling me Mel!
I've started replying back with the wrong name to them. It makes me feel better anyway!

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 27/04/2021 16:05

@RumJerrySailorRum

My name is a typical 70's name, but not Sarah or Claire.(altho weirdly, I do get called Sarah or Claire all the bloody time)....which has more than one spelling.

I occasionally get the extra letter in there but not often. I let that slide and if it's written down just cross the extra letter out.

What really pisses me off is when people shorten it when I've just introduced myself with the full length name. Eg, Hi, I'm Joanne, oh hi Jo. That is fucking really rude!!

Equally annoying when you shorten it (because you got fed up of being Jo-annnnn, Johanna, Juanna, Juann, Joan-ne, Jo-ann-ne and Joan) and people insist upon using any of the above because they don't like diminutives.

Or when the work convention is you are Miss/Mrs/Ms Surname and because you're stuck with the work email rules, people start calling you by your first name. No, I'm not your friend just because you can see what my full name is. Especially when you still sign yours off as Mr Overfamiliar.

RainingZen · 27/04/2021 16:10

I think many, many people have their names misspelled. Foreign name more likely, but even simple names are often spelled "wrong" or as a wrong variant.

I think it is something you just have to sigh and put up with.

PenfoldPenny · 27/04/2021 17:44

Regarding the foreign thing - I have a typically English first name. People are forever dropping the "a" and inserting an "e"
I hate it with an "e"
I have a surname that 99% of humans cant pronounce or spell.
Very annoying!

YellowScallion · 27/04/2021 17:49

I frequently get emails addressed to Emma, the only similarly is my name starts with an E
