To not want ds kitted out in dinosaurs and sharks?

Aliceandthemarchhare · 26/04/2021 09:43

Ds is four months and mostly wears babygros. I had mostly white and grey and cream to start with but obviously people bought us things and there was a lot of blue and I like the darker navy blues - it seems to suit him.

However looking for a sunhat for him and I’ve had to pay £11 for a plain navy one. I forgot his sleeping bag on holiday recently and had to get one covered in sharks.

Why are boys clothes so miserable? Surely baby boys can wear bright colours and slightly friendlier animals than T rexes and sharks?!

I think my daughter would take sharks over unicorns tbh, she is almost 13 and very slim, and all the girls clothes for her age are the same as they are for 6year olds... she finds it very frustrating. Who designs this stuff anyway? Do they even gave children themselves?

Have.... bloody autocorrect

This is how my Frugi addiction was born!

H&M exclusives online is nice. Just got bits from Zara and Next not an animal in sight!

Agreed!! My 12 year old gets so frustrated when we go shopping. And why does every piece of girls clothing have to have an American city on it somewhere? It's absolutely impossible to buy anything that doesn't have LA, New York, California etc in massive letters on it! Do you think American teens have the same issue, but with U.K. towns and cities? I have an image of them hanging around the mall in tops that say Bristol, Scarborough, Norwich.......

Best places for kids clothes are :
Zara...always nice classic well priced bits
Benetton...not as expensive as people think and always have gorgeous colours in their collection.
Vertbaudet....excellent for something a little different...I loved them for baby grows

@AccidentallyOnPurpose

Something like that would be fine. She does like darker colours usually but she would wear most of them (maybe not the raspberry pink one and not sure about the yellow - we could always tie dye them though as she has a kit to use).

I’m in Scotland so the shops have just opened this week. I did actually venture out and had a look in H&M yesterday but they didn’t have anything remotely like them in stock. It was a fairly large store too. They had a few multi packs of plain black and white long sleeve t shirts and some plain vest tops but that was it. I don’t like ordering online from H&M as it takes ages and then I have to pay postage on top. I would consider it if they done click and collect.

I did think about venturing to Zara as they usually have a couple of plain t shirts but the queue was half way down the street so I decided not to bother. I’ve bought plain black and navy t shirts from there before and they were lovely and soft, washed well and had a nice shape to them. I can see anything similar on the website but they usually have a better selection in store than online.

I’m sure we will find something now shops have reopened but it’s all a bit thin on the ground at the moment.

*can’t

I used to buy Gsp, Jojo Maman and Boden - all when there was sale or special offer. So it was mainly plain or Breton stripes. You can usually sell them on eBay after too....

pipsqueakbollock · 27/04/2021 22:51

DS is nearly 11
Since he was 2, he has refused to wear;
Animals of any description

Patterns of any description
Stripes
Checked

All clothes from socks, pants, T-shirts and trousers must be entirely plain.

I have no idea why he refuses but he simply will not wear any clothes other than plain.
A one colour Gap hoody is okay
Put tartan in the word Gap (I love this version) and NO NO NO.

It is a NIGHTMARE buying clothes for him on the high street as everything is striped, patterned, animated with cartoons or logo'd within an inch of itself.

EVEN THE FUCKING PYJAMAS.

Find me plain pyjamas. Non striped. Non logo. Non animal. Non patterned Pyjamas.

Why me ? I love a Breton stripe Sad

The younger boy stuff is much nicer than the 7+...most of it is covered in computer game stuff!!

I've found the opposite...everything for toddler boys was dinosaurs/sharks (and DS1 was scared of both and didn't want to wear them) or pale blue/gray that stained easily, now he's 5 and fits into the older boys range there's lots of plain bright colours or stripes.

MummyMayo1988 · 28/04/2021 09:33

I totally agree! I've always thought that boys clothes suck - there's always soo much more variety in the girls section. Girls toys - however - suck! Boys toys are always so much more interesting and messy!

When our first DS was born we bought a lot of whites, creams, yellows and greens (we didn't know what we were having) he also lived in babu grows for the first 4 months because I didn't want to dress him up like a doll in uncomfortable clothes. The more I shopped around; the more I realised that the boys clothes are soo boring.

I've got 3 DS's now and almost 12 years later I still think boys clothes suck in comparison to girls 😭

Jojofjo44 · 28/04/2021 09:43

YANBU. So many childrens clothes are aimed at being gender specific and it is very disheartening. I'm hoping to see a shift in this in the next few years, to a majority of prints and colours that are aimed simply at children not genders.

Wixi · 28/04/2021 09:54

The problem as they grow older too, is that their choices are gendered - my 11 year old DD loves Curious George, Horrid Henry, Paddington, but the only clothes that we can find with any of that on are in the boys section! Doesn't stop us buying and wearing it, but it does get annoying.

SleepingStandingUp · 28/04/2021 10:01

Oh god @pipsqueakbollock that's an actual dilemma. Thought meh, bey you can on Amazon... No. Arms and legs in one colour, body in white. That's the closest they come. Crazines.s

Skysblue · 28/04/2021 10:23

Yanbu, boys clothes are awful and wtf is up with the sharks. My son hates stuff like that. We are not interested in dinosaurs either. Because they have all been dead a very long time.

Lands End have some good stuff, as do Little Bird, Frugi, etc. Online is definitely your friend - just google things like ‘boys galaxy top’ or ‘bright boys clothes’. Amazon ok too.

I’ve also bought quite a lot of clothes from the ‘girls section - they tend to be softer fabrics and better made too 😥 But that often doesn’t work for tshirts are even toddler tshirts the girl ones are tighter and lower cut (yuck!)

Hesma · 28/04/2021 12:07

Unicorns yes and don’t forget the bloody llamas and watermelons now summer is on the way 🙄

Chocolatehabit · 28/04/2021 12:17

Boots do great baby grows that aren’t so sharky/ dinosaury. Also boden , frugi etc but they’re v pricey. Make the most of dinosaurs though - I absolutely hate that all the clothes aimed at 6+ for boys have PlayStation / fortnite etc on them.

JessicaAndHarry · 28/04/2021 12:17

I’m not sure if it has already been said as I haven’t read the responses, but I feel the same. I buy a lot of my son’s neutral clothes from H&M and Zara. I buy ALL of his socks and sun hats from H&M because they are the only place who do plain socks and sun hats!

Snaketime · 28/04/2021 18:56

Sharks are my favourite animals and the T-rex is one of my favourite dinosaurs, so I purposely kitted out my DS and DD in both.
I agree with the all pink for girls, I hate the colour pink, but it is my DD's second favourite colour Hmm.
I dont really hold much sway woth the whole boys clothes/girls clothes, my DD always had a mix and then they have all been passed down to my DS.

jamdonut · 29/04/2021 16:45

Back in the day, ( 90’s) when I was expecting my three, ( boy/girl/boy) and hospitals wouldn’t routinely tell you what sex the babies were, I bought mint green ,yellow, white or grey clothes, That worked out really well, when we got our ‘surprise’ . Although I didn’t worry too much about getting ‘boy’or ‘girl’ colours to be honest. Nice, bright , comfy and inexpensive was important to me.
