To not want ds kitted out in dinosaurs and sharks?

Aliceandthemarchhare · 26/04/2021 09:43

Ds is four months and mostly wears babygros. I had mostly white and grey and cream to start with but obviously people bought us things and there was a lot of blue and I like the darker navy blues - it seems to suit him.

However looking for a sunhat for him and I’ve had to pay £11 for a plain navy one. I forgot his sleeping bag on holiday recently and had to get one covered in sharks.

Why are boys clothes so miserable? Surely baby boys can wear bright colours and slightly friendlier animals than T rexes and sharks?!

Boots is fantastic for good prints. Boden and frugi although pricey - not something I'd send my DS into nursery in.

Of course also shop in the 'girls' section but be warned the quality won't be as good. Girls t shirts and shorts etc tend to be thinner, less durable.

zaffa · 27/04/2021 07:07

For everyone e saying buy from both departments (boys and girls) it's not quite so easy as boys sizes are different to girls (I know this because DD is chubby of the legs and so we mostly buy boys joggers as they fit better)

Aliceandthemarchhare · 27/04/2021 07:16

I’m not really looking for advice though whinge, thanks. But I am inclined to think you and a couple of others are taking a fairly light hearted thread a bit seriously to be honest.

There are a lot of clothes with sharks and dinosaurs for boys. I am not saying they are the only ones, but some styles are limited. Ds is a baby, he isn’t wearing shorts and t shirts and dungarees aren’t massively practical.

I can’t believe someone has said I am being unreasonable because her child likes dinosaurs and sharks, blimey. PFB? Grin

Gendered clothes are awful!

BumCat · 27/04/2021 07:34

I buy DD clothes from the boys section quite often (I find there seems to be an assumption girls don’t need to be warm!). We have many a dinosaur jumper but I’m yet to see sharks! I’ll keep an eye out. Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 27/04/2021 07:37

Wait until they hit the "older boys" ranges. Grey/ black/ sludge and gaming themes.
Particularly annoying for coats in roadkill colours, when you want them to be visible on a misty night on November.
I tend to find outdoors shops better for a bit more cplour and variety.

I wanted a range of pastel colours when my two were babies. It was clearly off-trend then.

BikeRunSki · 27/04/2021 08:01

Sharks and dinos is better than the “pale blue with cars on” of 13 years ago.

I always managed to find unisex “brights” in Next, JJMMBB, Boots, Sainsbury’s, John Lewis and H&M, for both DS(13) and DD(9). Then there’s largely online brands like Toby Tiger, Bob and Blossom, Frugi, Kite and Boden.

Isn't that ridiculous. Boy and girl toddlers are much the same size and chubbiness. I've also noticed 'girl' joggers are much tighter fitting.
BraveBraveMouse · 27/04/2021 08:56

It's always predator animals on boys clothes...and non predator/ bottom of the food chain animals on girls clothes. I think it's creepy and wish more places did gender neutral clothes. I like Frugi for gender neutral bright clothing but can't really afford it.

I think this is bollocks. My sons have a wide range of animals on their clothes, with ducks, birds, rabbits, dogs, sheep all featuring heavily.

YANBU! When my DCs were young I was able to get lovely clothes for my boy from exactly same places as I bought clothes for my girl. Nowadays you can’t just grab nice boy clothes from the nearest supermarket. There are some lovely lovely boys clothes but they do tend to be more expensive

Holly60 · 27/04/2021 09:19

Not intrinsically, no. Only when they decide that girls have to have unicorns and boys have to have sharks. I wouldn’t ever have put my son in a dress, for example. But neither would I have dressed him in clothes covered in predator animals.

Um, so you buy from both departments, in fact? Toddlers are different from each other, but there's no significant difference between boys and girls at that age. Buy the clothes that fit, that you like, no matter which shelf they're on.

LittleOwl153 · 27/04/2021 09:35

Kids clothes are a nightmare. I had a dd who at 2 refused to wear anything with the slightest bit of pink on it... why noone knows! I had a niece who at 2/3 loved Thomas the Tank engine. We could find clothes for neither in the girls ranges... some things from the boys ranges worked some didn't.
They are now both teens and whilst the niece grew out of Thomas, dd still won't wear pink. Clothes have not got any easier as they are now ladies sizing but don't want skimpy....

SleepingStandingUp · 27/04/2021 09:54

some things from the boys ranges worked some didn't didn't work as in she didn't like them or an unsuitable for girl because they were boy clothes?

Luddite26 · 27/04/2021 17:34

Have tp say i have pondered the popularity of dinosaurs on kids stuff - no royalties to pay!
GD 4 and GS 2 love dinos so it suits us but i hate the unicorn thing!
GS has a lot of Roald Dahl clothes from m n s . When they were babies though it was more peter rabbit and a bit of lion king and mainly plain clothes.

Luddite26 · 27/04/2021 17:37

I hate the Frugi colours - just seems so 1980s!

Davygran · 27/04/2021 17:39

@JeanClaudeVanDammit

I’ll swap you sharks for f*ing unicorns! I love the bright colours and different prints on clothes from e.g. Frugi but they are so much more expensive unless you can get a good second hand bundle.
Yes! Exactly this! Unicorns & rainbows - yuck!
Cutesbabasmummy · 27/04/2021 17:57

@BogRollBOGOF yes 100% this! We were offered bloody camouflage shoes in Clarks in Saturday! Big no from the 6 year old boy and me. He dresses almost exclusively in Boden with H and M thrown in!

confused107 · 27/04/2021 18:06

I hear you. 5 month old DD and everything is bunnies. Thought it was cute at first but now....

StillWeRise · 27/04/2021 18:08

you've just reminded me OP
when DCs were little - 20 years ago- I used to buy bedding and pyjamas at a market stall, usually M&S or similar seconds, good value.
The stall owner was an older man who always had a rather world weary, lugubrious air.
I complained to him once about all the characters on the kids clothes/bedding
'ah, kiss of death is plain, never shift it'
was his answer.

Are you shopping in some kind of weird rabbit fetish store? Pick literally any other place that sells baby clothes, you will find many alternatives to bunnies. They are literally everywhere.
SleepDeprived2018 · 27/04/2021 18:10

@Aliceandthemarchhare
I am pregnant with a boy and i have a two year old girl - i can’t believe the difference in clothes like they will have four rails of clothes for girls and then one for boys?

So far i would say Lindex - Zara (the sales are amazing) - H&M - Next and sometimes TK Maxx

I love either gender baby in a white baby grow for aslong as i can get away with it xx

Crazycactuslady · 27/04/2021 18:13

We have a lot of Moromini, Maxomorra, Frugi, Duns etc, but pair with plain Fruit of the Loom tshirts. They're about £2.50 each from Amazon. They all wash really well even after crawling in the mud, so we tend to not buy quite as many items to even it out.

I don't mind Sharks etc so much as the blue background to everything. Even worse, the slightly mismatched variants of blue Hmm

Aliceandthemarchhare · 27/04/2021 18:18

swim do you realise you are being really quite unpleasant to everyone on this thread who has had a different shopping experience to you?
