To not want ds kitted out in dinosaurs and sharks?

Aliceandthemarchhare · 26/04/2021 09:43

Ds is four months and mostly wears babygros. I had mostly white and grey and cream to start with but obviously people bought us things and there was a lot of blue and I like the darker navy blues - it seems to suit him.

However looking for a sunhat for him and I’ve had to pay £11 for a plain navy one. I forgot his sleeping bag on holiday recently and had to get one covered in sharks.

Why are boys clothes so miserable? Surely baby boys can wear bright colours and slightly friendlier animals than T rexes and sharks?!

I completley agree OP

The clothes for boys are mostly foul.

I've had success with next, matalan, Sainaburys, tesco and I buy a lot of millie and Ralph and dandelion from a local baby clothes shop.

Asda George had some lovely animal themed sleepsuits and vests in recently. Sadly the quality was absolutely shite and bobbled after first wash. (I've bought older dc clothes from George in the past and they do last usually).

Now is the time to dress DS in whatever you like, once they are older it's a nightmare. Ds (8) has always refused to wear anything with buttons and collars, and currently switches between his two pokemon tshirts. DS (11) lives in joggers and 'plain' tshirts. He refuses jeans. Give me dinosaurs and sharks any day!

@MyCatHatesOtherCats

Marks and Spencer have some nice bits at the moment - I got my DS some lovely joggers with sloths on and noticed last time I was in that they do dresses and tops in the same material. Really nice to see something less gendered.

Jojo Maman Bébé, Next, H&M and sometimes Sainsbury’s are all good for less gendered clothes, in my experience.

Although I did just buy DS1 girls pyjamas - because they have pigs all over them and he loves pigs - so I may not be the best judge!

@MyCatHatesOtherCats My DS has the sloths too ☺️ Very cute!! They do those joggers/sweatshirts/dresses/dungarees every season in a variety of prints and they’re always 3 for 2 ☺️

When dd now 15 was a baby and toddler she loved dinos so she often wore boys clothes and looked super cute 🥰

I've seen cute things in H&M Zara and sainsbos

PembrokeshireDreaming · 26/04/2021 15:31

YABU there are lots of choices that don't include sharks and dinosaurs. I was in Asda earlier buying some babygrows for a friend
and thought they had a fab selection ( I bought these) direct.asda.com/george/baby/sleepsuits-pyjamas/animal-print-sleepsuits-5-pack/GEM810615,default,pd.html?cgid=D5M9G1C13

I rather like these dinosaur hats though direct.asda.com/george/baby/bibs-accessories/navy-dinosaur-bucket-sun-hats-2-pack/GEM815258,default,pd.html?cgid=D5M9G1C1

MaskingForIt · 26/04/2021 15:39

My 10 week old boy is currently wearing a baby grow with pink flowers and ducks on it. He keeps being “misgendered” but I don’t care - I like it and that’s all that matters at this age!

Wroxie · 26/04/2021 15:40

I posted a whingey AIBU recently about a colleague who politely(?) rejected a light brown knitted hat with kitten ears I made for her baby son (because she loves cats and owns several) because cats are for girls apparently. So it does look like animals are gendered now.

I personally love dinosaurs and I feel confident many of them were gentle souls (maybe not the T-Rexes, though).

Wroxie · 26/04/2021 15:45

Sorry, posted too soon - a couple of my friends who HATE gendered baby clothes get lots of stuff here. With the exception of the dresses and some little flouncy blouses, pretty much everything is bright and non gendered. The little red dungarees with the elephant on the pocket are making me broody now!

ForgedInFire · 26/04/2021 15:50

I voted YABU I have a baby boy myself and although dinosaurs are very popular, I've recently bought clothes with Mr Men, the Hungry Caterpillar, Peter Rabbit and Willy Wonka prints so there is choice out there. I find baby boys clothes more varied and the colour choice better then what I had for my 2 older girls. And I don't buy expensive brands, just high street or supermarket.

HunterAngel · 26/04/2021 16:14

Welcome to boys clothes! Your choices are dinosaurs, robots or football all in various shades of blue or grey. I almost cheered when I finally found bright colours in the boys section. All the girls clothes were pink and/or covered in unicorns. I despise the colour pink and I am so bloody fed up with the sodding unicorns that are on everything.

Sainsbury’s had some decent animal print clothes recently. Tesco is mostly dinosaurs or robots with the occasional Disney character thrown

Why do people keep repeating this nonsense? It's simply not true. Unless you're shopping in one aisle of one shop, its utter nonsense. There are countless sources to buy baby clothes in every colour you can think of, and some patterns you haven't.

bakingdemon · 26/04/2021 16:56

Try Lindex too for lovely bright prints. Boden/John Lewis/Frugi all lovely stuff but it is pricey, as are the European brands like Duns and Maxomorra

BigusBumus · 26/04/2021 18:06

@swimlittlefishy Amazing how 157 separate posters on this thread agree with the OP. And only you and one or 2 others disagree.

You seem very invested in telling all these people they are wrong (without listening to what they're actually saying) and have spent all day on the thread to do so.

Most bizarre.

Aliceandthemarchhare · 26/04/2021 18:12

To be fair a few said I was being UR. Just don’t seem so angry about it!

Honestly I've just found some dino print facemasks for myself and am delighted. Grin

I dressed DS in dinos all the time as a baby, so of course he became obsessed with cars. I desperately wanted a dino baby.

I'm going nowhere with this. I empathise over the lack of choice, though. It doesn't get much better. DS is now 12 and trying to find anything that isn't camo/ black/ navy blue and/or covered in quasi skater boy shite is really difficult and has been for a few age groups now. I think once they're older than 8 they're meant to forget all joy they've ever had in their wardrobes.

SleepingStandingUp · 26/04/2021 18:27

I'm with @swimlittlefishy, there's plenty of choice if you try. Just on one page out outfits theres a good mix of Disney, predators, plains etc.
25 characters from Disney or similar
21 plain
5 small inoffensive logo
1 superhero
9 predators

Oh and one bunny and one Easter chick

whyhell0there · 26/04/2021 18:30

eBay is great for cheap colourful kids' clothing! Got lots of stuff on there from brands like Little Bird.

Aliceandthemarchhare · 26/04/2021 18:32

I don’t really like any of them except the grey outfit Blush

I feel the same. I am SICK of dinosaurs and woodland animals on boys clothes!

Enough4me · 26/04/2021 18:37

I used to look out for JoJoMaman sales, I wish I could squeeze my DS into the boy's seagull shirt (he would kill me now he is nearly teen Grin)

I agree with this.

There are plenty of good value clothing for boys other than sharks or dinosaurs.

So you agree there's plenty of choice, you're just being fussy with what you like. That's fine, but it doesn't reflect your original complaint. There's plenty of choice that doesn't include dinosaurs / sharks, but you just don't like what's available.
Aliceandthemarchhare · 26/04/2021 19:10

Sorry I will rephrase.

There are a lot of dinosaurs and sharks which is a shame when there are a plethora of other animals and styles.

It’s a MN thread, not an oath at the stand.

I've had a read through your posts and I'm not 100% clear on what you are looking for. Maybe if you posted a couple of outfits that your DS has that you like, posters could help find other things that suit your taste and are good for your budget? I'm also quite fussy with my kids clothes so I understand the struggle
