To not want ds kitted out in dinosaurs and sharks?

Aliceandthemarchhare · 26/04/2021 09:43

Ds is four months and mostly wears babygros. I had mostly white and grey and cream to start with but obviously people bought us things and there was a lot of blue and I like the darker navy blues - it seems to suit him.

However looking for a sunhat for him and I’ve had to pay £11 for a plain navy one. I forgot his sleeping bag on holiday recently and had to get one covered in sharks.

Why are boys clothes so miserable? Surely baby boys can wear bright colours and slightly friendlier animals than T rexes and sharks?!

No I'm not, I'm wondering how you are all quite so blind.
It's like a hundred people stating the colour yellow doesn't exist while I'm sitting here in a yellow jumper.
Posts upon posts stating you can only buy clothes with bunnies on, or dinosaurs, and all boys clothes only come in blue. This is categorically not true.
So I'm wondering what collective glue you all sniffed, is all.

Grin no you’re right, you have charming manners

This is why I taught myself to sew, bought an overlocker and lots of lovely brightly coloured fabric and make my boy clothes instead!
That said, Next do tend to have a fair amount of brightly coloured non Dino/shark clothing and I’ve found nice bits in nutmeg and Sainsbury’s.
On the more expensive side Joules and JoJo Maman Bebe are a good shout or handmade clothing (can recommend some very good independent handmade children’s clothing people!)

takethegirloutofwales · 27/04/2021 18:56

Honestly...I’m not freaked by any character or motif on clothes. I’m not saying I would totally avoid but treat each item on an individual basis. Some can be tasteful, others tacky. Next are always a go to for me. My kids are 11 and 13 now so we are past this phase.

Try finding a t shirt for an 11 year old girl that - isn’t a crop top.

  • isn’t pink.
  • has no sequins.
  • has no glitter.
  • has no unicorns / Micky mouse/ fairy / other cutesy animal print.
  • doesn’t say ‘New York’ ‘Brooklyn’ ‘LA’ ‘girls rule’ etc.
  • has no embroidery.

We have found exactly 2 t-shirts in 6 months that fit the above criteria and don’t cost the earth.

Not a single t shirt in any supermarket (ie the only shops open over lockdown) has been available since we started looking around Christmas time. Not one. We did look at boys t shirts but for some reason the nice plain colour ones all have a pocket on the chest and my self conscious 11 year old says it makes it look like a boy t shirt and draws attention to her chest area which she doesn’t want (she’s at that age).

I think the secret @swimlittlefishy is to ignore the hyperbole

Carouselfish · 27/04/2021 19:23

Agree a lot of boys clothes are miserable. Who'd put a

Carouselfish · 27/04/2021 19:24

baby in black, that was meant to say...

ouchyouchyow · 27/04/2021 19:31

I'm sick of unicorns and rainbows. Would prefer something more neutral for girls. Something different would be good for both boys and girls

This made me laugh.
I hate stupidly gendered clothing & hate how it dominates some shops, but the claims on here that seem to suggest it's almost impossible to find fairly standard, bright, baby clothes are quite funny.

It does feel a bit 'why aren't there any/many boy clothes that aren't blah blah blah... oh you're showing me plenty that aren't... yeah but they still aren't blah blah blah... oh there's more stuff that fits the ever shifting criteria... but I don't like those examples... but I think those companies are too expensive..."

It seems more like it's not fair that I can't find a particular style of baby clothes in a very narrow range of acceptable colours that aren't too bright, aren't too pale, aren't too boring, and aren't from shops I consider expensive even though people have suggested certain brands second hand.

Aliceandthemarchhare · 27/04/2021 19:57

lola no one has disputed that you can find lovely baby clothes. But in fairness ds is 4 months. It’s only for the past fortnight I have had the luxury of popping into a shop with him. Before that it was supermarkets or fairly expensive brands like boden, JoJo, and so on.

I have just posted on another thread about leggings but there are lovely fabrics on the Two Teds website.

HerMammy · 27/04/2021 20:01

Some of my current favourites, still blue but space, giraffes and otters, slight break from dinos 😀

I have a daughter who needs a new wardrobe but hates all things girly.

Trying to buy her a summer wardrobe has been impossible! She wants bright colours, no girly pictures. Nothing skimpy, frilly or shiny.

Everything and I mean everything in the girls section is girly and skimpy! Shorts are too short or too tight... tops have cut off sleeves... and nothing is durable!

What I did struggle to find though were proper straight/loose jeans for DD that weren't jogger style. Pain in the ass.

HerMammy · 27/04/2021 20:25

@AccidentallyOnPurpose
Next have paper bag jeans that might suit your DD if she wanting loose ones.

This is what I'm looking for. Plain, normal, long, straight leg jeans without too low or baggy crotch .Seem to be harder and harder to find as she grows older.

I do realise however that they're not in fashion and I'm fussy as fuck . Grin

PurplePansy05 · 27/04/2021 20:45

Well I have always loved dinosaurs and as a child I would have loved to have this sort of clothes but it wasn't a thing in the 80s. I am expecting my son in August and got him a range of clothes, mostly in rainbow colours and animal patterns, also some whites, greys, greens and blues. If we have another DC and it's a girl I don't see why she couldn't wear them too and I'll probably keep most of them. I'm not finding them miserable at all, maybe you need to have a further look online.

LovelyIssues · 27/04/2021 20:45

You can buy baby clothes in literally any colour with any pattern. How people can moan there is not enough diversity is baffling to me

HerMammy · 27/04/2021 20:47

@AccidentallyOnPurpose
Gap have straight and girlfriend fit, think they are what you’re looking for.

BigusBumus · 27/04/2021 20:49

OMG are you still at it @swimlittlefishy!? 😳

Just popped on to check and you've not let me down! You've clearly got as much time to waste searching for these baby clothes as you have to be constantly on a pretty tedious thread and be shit to people.

Aliceandthemarchhare · 27/04/2021 20:53

Ds had that space babygro as a newborn hermammy

So cute Smile

Thank you. Looking now. Found some on H&M that might work too.

Just a bug bear of mine that they're not easily available and searchable. Just have to wait for the fashion to catch up (or go back) I guess.Grin
