Tens of thousands of people protested in London yesterday, why isn’t it in the news?

What is going on with the news these days? Whether or not you agree with anti restriction protests, surely the public have a right to be informed about a protest that large? I’m feeling increasingly uncomfortable with the censorship. Anyone else?

You don’t get to dictate that other people find your offensive and ill informed protest newsworthy. The anti-semitism on display was shameful.

MarshaBradyo · 25/04/2021 10:11

@coconutmonkey

YANBU. Whether we agree with the cause or not, thousands and thousands of people filling the streets of our capital city in protest should be headline news.
It’s down to public interest

Most don’t want to know about these idiots they don’t have support.

If police officer is injured then that is rightly covered. And the star thing is so wrong so gets some kind of press.

Madhairday · 25/04/2021 10:12

Chilled to the bone about the yellow star thing. That's a new low.
I've seen a few of these threads on MN. There's definitely a narrative to do with the 'robust opposing science' being 'suppressed' by MSM and everyone who doesn't see this being sheeple who don't think for ourselves but instead are willing to be dictated to by government and media. This thing about the protest feeds into their thinking because they are once again being suppressed; they are the underground movement, the revolutionaries who see the actual truth. They do not see that they are being sucked into a machine with racist undertones, or maybe they do and don't care.
Either way, it's on the news for all to see, and most people don't care very much as we've heard it all a million times and we're too concerned with the situation for people in India to be bothered about a few thousand people who don't like wearing masks.

Are you referring to the Myanmar protest? I cycled past it at Big Ben and there were perhaps 50-100 people...
OnlyInYourDreams · 25/04/2021 10:15

The less coverage these morons get the better.

Fact is, the more the press reports on them the more they think they have an audience. Take away their audience and the majority of the point to their protests are lost.

I.e. don’t feed the trolls.

OnlyInYourDreams · 25/04/2021 10:16

And anyone who uses the word sheeple is thick as fuck.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/04/2021 10:17

I hopped over to the DM website as they always have lots of photos. It seems that there were a huge number of large-breasted women on the march - or maybe they are disproportionately represented in the photos.

Anyway, alongside the 'No to vaccine passports' banners there were
'Covid-19 Vaccine Holocaust'
'Wake up and smell the tyranny. Covid is a Hoax. Your government is lying to you'
'We are in the middle of a mass hypnosis'
'Plandemic Deep State Fake Cabal Paedophile'
'Make influenza great again'

Cornettoninja · 25/04/2021 10:20

@Anniegetyourgun - I’m wary of sounding like another conspiracy theorist (Grin) but quite honestly if I was forced to pick a flag to fly I don’t quite trust the motivations behind ‘nothing to see here, it’s all fine’ crowd precisely because it’s blatantly obvious (to me at least) that there’s a lot of people losing a lot of money and it’s in their financial interest to play down the effectiveness of a lot of our restrictions.

There’s a middle ground of balancing both health and socioeconomic needs and I try to be careful to not get caught up in either extreme. There’s a lot of agendas out there and I’ve found that the moderate, unfortunately usually quieter, voice tends to be most credible.

OnlyInYourDreams · 25/04/2021 10:25

@ noblegiraffe can you imagine how embarrassing it must be to be related to someone like that?

My FB friend list took a decent hit in the beginning of this pandemic, with people talking about how it was all a hoax/a conspiracy of the illuminati/how masks were muzzles and on and on. I didn’t even bother to reason with any of them, as soon as I saw one such comment they were unfriended. And then I went on to block people who posted on my friends’ timelines about the sheeple and about it all being a hoax, and the one who said that “I don’t need the vaccine, I have God.” Hmm

MaybUnreasonable · 25/04/2021 10:41

What exactly are they protesting against? We're already coming out of lockdown Confused

Jeez, I despair.

The less airtime given to these idiots, the better, as far as I'm concerned.

Whammyyammy · 25/04/2021 10:53

People can protest if they like, but not everybody cares nor wants to see yet another protest on the news each week

granny24 · 25/04/2021 10:56

I am an old hand at demos. I learned in the 1960’s that the media always ignore any protest that didn’t fit their agenda.

Maireas · 25/04/2021 10:59

This protest wasn't ignored, @granny24

Yet it wasn’t ignored.
GrammarTeacher · 25/04/2021 11:04

Why do we hear so often from these people saying they're being denied a voice. It's constant. It's all over the news. All over social media. It's everywhere. Heck, the no masks crew found it easier to get an audience with the government than the teaching unions when the plans for schools reopening were being written. Exactly who is suppressing them? They're doing a terrible job of it!

noblegiraffe · 25/04/2021 11:07

‘The government won’t let the media report this protest’ is part of their conspiracy narrative so of course they have to keep claiming it in the face of the news reports. If the media do report it (and they did), what else that they believe might turn out not to be true either?

toffeebutterpopcorn · 25/04/2021 11:07

I live near where they were gathering. We get quite a lot of demos and marches - if the news covered them all, at some towns of the year there’d be something every week.

CoalTit · 25/04/2021 11:15

Why were they wearing yellow stars?
I think they're worried that the vaccine passport will be used to coerce everyone into getting the vaccine by denying work, travel and access to various venues to anyone without it, as Jewish people were denied access to various services and venues in 1930s Germany. They're afraid that the pandemic is being used as an excuse to change society for the worse.

Is that what you think too, CoalTit?
I'm undecided. I hazarded an answer to someone's question about the yellow stars because I'd read an opinion piece (The Corbett Report or Off Guardian, maybe) which compared the gradual marginalization of jewish people to that of dissidents. I wrote "I think..." because I don't actually know anyone who has a considered anti-lockdown opinion.

are they against lateral flow tests as well?
How the hell would I know?

JassyRadlett · 25/04/2021 11:20

The trouble with this argument (not suggesting it’s yours, but it is deeply flawed) is that it suggests that the Nazi horror against the Jews existed in isolation rather than following centuries of anti-Jewish racism. It ignores the reason that the Jews were targeted by the Nazis is that Jews had already been the victims of persecution and racism for a long, long time.

And it suggests that there was any evidence-based argument that could be made to support the Nazi persecution of the Jews, analogous to the evidence-based public health arguments for Covid measures.

And so is disgustingly racist.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/04/2021 11:23

One of the placards has the Ss in a different colour, size etc. So it had SS in the middle of the words. Bright spark had missed and obvious one and didn't know enough ss words for it to make much sense - and she had made the SSs lowecase and lighter than the words around them!!

But she and the woman alongside her were posing nicely for the camera, so all is well!

noblegiraffe · 25/04/2021 11:23

Coaltit do you agree that it is highly offensive and antisemitic to appropriate the symbol of Judaism and mimic its use by the Nazis?

Pinchoftums · 25/04/2021 11:24

The Daily Mail must be so confused about who to go with as lots of the idiots on the march yesterday align with their ideology but at the same time their core readers are the over 50s. 95% of whom have had vaccines.

ForeverAintEnough12 · 25/04/2021 11:26
