If so what it is and how much do you make pcm?

I have seen LOADS on my sm recently and I’m so curious about them.

I started match betting last Sunday and I’ve made €350 so far.

@SofiaMichelle

No one I know who does these sorts of 'on the side' jobs declares their earnings for tax purposes.

I assume it's the same with people on here (I'm sure they'll all say not, of course) and the irony in that is how left-wing MN is with regard to entitlement to state support and the disdain for businesses perceived to not pay enough tax.

So strange that this is your default thought. Maybe you should keep better company? Might help you realise that not everyone has the same low morales as those you associate with?

For the record, my side business is a limited company so full tax returns each year. In addition, I also earn a high salary through my PAYE employment. Overall, I’m a net contributor so really do not appreciate your insinuation.

Justanotherlurker · 24/04/2021 23:44

Run a few websites/mobile apps selling mass produced odds and sods to the many little boutiques that are found in the famous MN high street 'indepentants' .

Do a lot of investing but not in property as I do actually have some left leaning values and believe that the future generation should be able to afford a house to live.

Also believe it or not, actual trainers, I have got numerous trainers that I bought for £70 that are now worth well over £1000 and they will only keep going up, recently sold a pair of original green Kermit Adidas for over a $1000 to the US after buying them from TK Max for £15.

@kiwiPlumapple

I do cash in hand cleaning for one of my friends
I do the same for a relative. She's not very mobile and prefers to pay me to do it rather than have a stranger in the house. It started when my husband got made redundant and we were struggling a bit for money. I do her cleaning whilst we have a chinwag and catch up, so it's a win/win all round.
sweetclems · 24/04/2021 23:52

@Angliski

Property.

Day to day I run a careers consultancy business and employ a team of five. But I was only able to build that up because I had invested in property. I’ve six rentals in various parts of the country and a home abroad, all of which are let. These pay all the monthly bills and then some. I’ve always loved houses.

I'm going into property as soon as I get the funds together for property 1... any tips?

This is Mumsnet, not the Tory party front bench, so no.

Thighdentitycrisis · 25/04/2021 00:54

Side hustle side hustle side hustle

memberofthewedding · 25/04/2021 00:55

I sell antiques on a number of venues. I am tax and VAT registered and well respected in my very niche area.

When I hear someone use an expression like the con you are trying to run often overpriced tat on ebay

I know I am dealing with jealousy and resentment from some poorly educated yahoo who would not know a valuable antique if they fell over one.

RavingAnnie · 25/04/2021 00:57

@CirclesWithinCircles

I hate these American terms.

A lot of salaried roles preclude other paid work outwith your normal hours of employment. Mine is one of them. So, no.

You don't need to be so snooty about it.

Many people have to have more than one job as their first pays so poorly.

Your response is very rude and unnecessary.

therocinante · 25/04/2021 01:11

@Susannahmoody

*makes mental note to say side hustle as often as possible, in any context, on MN
Same 😅 just because it apparently is so annoying!

Perfectly commonly used amongst the people I know, side hustle haters, as a way to describe a second job that was generally a freelance version of something you already did.

I'm a writer on the side. Good months I make £1k extra, quiet months I make £100. I could take on much more work if I wanted but at the moment I don't want to spend too much time doing it.

StayingHere · 25/04/2021 01:25

I do freelance writing as a side hustle to my teaching job. It ebbs and flows with the academic year so at this time of year I have next to no work, between August and March I can earn between 500-1000 pounds a month if it's all going well. I have clients in the UK and one other country. We do not count the money in our general family finances - the money is used for private dental/medical expenses if needed and for holidays and treats for the DC.

StayingHere · 25/04/2021 01:30

also really bizarre that people are so offended by the term 'side hustle'. It's a pretty standard term for an extra job these days, I cannot find a way to get offended by it.

ElGuardiandenoche · 25/04/2021 01:58

There was another thread at the beginning of the year.

youdialwetile · 25/04/2021 02:13

My side hustle has turned into my main source of income - it's part of the gig economy so I only get paid if I work hours. I do some off-the -books work if I can trust the client to be discreet. Make about $500 a month off the books.

My DH has a "silly job" - works a few hours a week at a job that uses his specialized training (although he doesn't have to "do" anything). Makes about $1000 a month.

Where we are (USA) side hustles are pretty common. Worked with plenty of "professionals" who wait tables on the side.

Binkybix · 25/04/2021 02:28

Side hustle is fine to say OP, don’t worry!

Accentor · 25/04/2021 03:16

My main ambition in life is to work out what @speakout makes and nick her idea. I've been stalking her round the boards for years, envying her perfect set-up. One day she'll let slip what her magic craft niche is and I'll pounce.

Spidey66 · 25/04/2021 05:27

I own a holiday let, a small fls t bought with money I inherited after my parents had both died.

It doesn't really make a profit day to day. Any money made during thdd summer tends to keep it ticking over in the winter, with any extra getting ploughed back into it via improvements etc. Last year it took a huge gig due to the pandemic and I had to use my savings a lot, but touch wood this year bookings are up.

Any profit is likely to be generated once I sell the property.

Spidey66 · 25/04/2021 05:28

Oh for an edit function, I hope amid the typos you get the gist.

Thamigumathacharaid · 25/04/2021 05:59

I also hate the term "side hustle" as I often find it accompanied by "bossbabe", "mumpreneur" and they all often involve various MLM scams schemes.

My job ended due to Covid in late October and I ramped up my shop on Etsy. I've gone from making a couple of hundred to £1k profit minimum per month despite it being slow. I'm having a few days off from my shop as I'm being induced today. I love my business but it's also extremely tiring. On a positive note, a European furniture brand have just expressed interest in us selling through them so we're hoping to expand very soon. Not bad considering I started the business to sell a few items that I had lying around the house. This business is helping to support me after my car accident three years ago that left me with a disability. I'm currently awaiting my compensation payout so any profit being made is being ploughed straight back into the shop.
I also have two rental properties with my partner.

ChristmasAlone · 25/04/2021 06:08

I have a 50(ish)k followers on IG and used to do bikini fitness competition and got an IFBB pro card - a relatively okay supplement company sends me stuff monthly and pays me a minimum amount of money. Also run posing classes, which I charge for.

Whilst not strictly money I also get sent meat hampers monthly from a fairly well known hamper company and gym clothes every couple of months from another.

I have at anyone times 4 clients that make training plans for as well as diets - these go down to macros. Could do more but would take up alot of my spare time.

I have designs on red bubble, zazzle, society6, and cafe press which sell a small amount each month with no effort from my self.

I am signed up to a few sites like upwork where I do freelancing work, but am generally to lazy to compete for jobs on there. Last couple of years also unfortunately they have now become an open markets and people from countries that have a way lower cost of living can also bid to do the work for a much lower cost than I'd think reasonable.

I have a blog which gets semi okay readers and have affiliate links on there, so earn per click through.

If I was more proactive I could earn more,

groovergirl · 25/04/2021 06:21

I do paper rounds. It started as a Gen X midlife crisis thing, when I got fed up with sitting down at a desk all day. I like walking and cycling in whatever weather, and an opportunity arose to be paid for my exercise.

The paper rounds have earned me about A$120,000 over the past decade, allowing me to renovate my kitchen, leave my XH and pay off my mortgage, in that order. They currently bring in about A$800 a month, Feb-Dec.

Gigglebert · 25/04/2021 06:33

I'm a teacher and I also have a small business alongside (all fully declared), this year with covid I didn't want to take on any new students and so I'm only tutoring two girls that I also worked with last year. I charge £35/hour so make an extra £280/month pre deductions. Tutoring is only really an earner for about 40 weeks a year though!

Skigal86 · 25/04/2021 06:47

I’m a teacher and also technically self employed in the sector I worked in before I went into teaching, that said I haven’t done any work in that area for the last three years thanks to covid/mat leave/pregnancy. I’ve just been told there’s a significant shortage of freelancers in my industry though so I might do a few days over the summer although the idea of having to sort childcare and my current stress over a new role and professional qualifications doesn’t make it that appealing!

BessMarvin · 25/04/2021 07:06

@Wroxie

I loathe the phrase "side hustle" but since you asked, I used to trawl car boot sales and charity shops for retro video games, gaming consoles, and peripherals (everything from early Atari through to Nintendo Game Cube and Playstation 1). I've found individual games that I paid almost nothing for that I was able to resell for up to £1,000,and a couple of consoles I found in perfect, unused condition are now literally in museums (one in Cambridge, the other in Seattle).

I made nearly 20k profit over a couple of years doing this evenings and weekends, but even before Covid, the real gems had started to become almost nonexistent as more people got into it. I doubt I'll go back to it seriously (though I will always paw through any old box of video games and equipment I happen upon).

I've been to that museum in Cambridge. We loved it, brought back memories!
Ytrigging · 25/04/2021 07:24

I write children’s fiction outside of my day job. I have 3 published books, one in editing and I recently started writing the 5th. The most successful so far has brought me about £12,000 and the least successful about £3500. I wouldn’t really consider it a side huddle though. It’s something I love to do which happens to bring in money but I wrote long before I earned anything for it. I wrote personal books for my nieces and nephews for years.
