My sister has a v lucrative second job which makes more than her actual job, v lucky as I’m not good at anything out of work (nurse)

Aloethere · 24/04/2021 19:26

I made mine my full time job. I have an online shop.

Wroxie · 24/04/2021 19:26

I loathe the phrase "side hustle" but since you asked, I used to trawl car boot sales and charity shops for retro video games, gaming consoles, and peripherals (everything from early Atari through to Nintendo Game Cube and Playstation 1). I've found individual games that I paid almost nothing for that I was able to resell for up to £1,000,and a couple of consoles I found in perfect, unused condition are now literally in museums (one in Cambridge, the other in Seattle).

I made nearly 20k profit over a couple of years doing this evenings and weekends, but even before Covid, the real gems had started to become almost nonexistent as more people got into it. I doubt I'll go back to it seriously (though I will always paw through any old box of video games and equipment I happen upon).

@speakout

My "side hustle" is a full time job. Selling craft items on Amazon and ebay.
do you sell supplies for crafts or crafts?
sweetclems · 24/04/2021 19:34

I have a blog and my income varies... some months I make 8k others 1.5k

Hoppinggreen · 24/04/2021 19:34

I sometimes do candidate assessment for The Police on the side.
I love it, well paid and flexible and doesn’t interfere with my main job

queenofthenorthwest · 24/04/2021 19:38

No but I want one I just don't know what to do. I'm quite crafty but I am out of ideas

pineapplejuice22 · 24/04/2021 19:41

Crikey! I didn't mean to offend anyone with the term 'side hustle'. I didn't realise the connotations so I apologise. I simply meant a small business in addition to your main income.

I would love one but I don't feel that I have any appropriate skills!

pineapplejuice22 · 24/04/2021 19:42

@queenofthenorthwest what are you good at? What's your craft of choice?

Slipperfairy · 24/04/2021 19:44

'Side hustle' makes you sound daring and driven, rather than selling magic coffee or knock off perfume and recruiting an army of huns.

Me too.
I crochet but people see it as homemade=cheap and not handcrafted=time&skill so aren't prepared to pay.

sonjadog · 24/04/2021 20:01

Yes, I write along side my job. The pay is quite good but I don't do anywhere near enough to live off.

FourteenthDoctor · 24/04/2021 20:02

There's nothing wrong with the phrase side hustle!

Side chick maybe Wink

pregnantncnc · 24/04/2021 20:03

My business used to be my "side job", but it became my full time job. Then I took on a part time waitressing job as my "side job" when I moved areas while I built up clients. I couldn't tell you how much I earn/earned.

Now I do a tiny bit of online tutoring, as my "side job". I earn £200-£300 extra a month, depending on what I take on (Not more than 5 hours or so a week, usually)

delilahbucket · 24/04/2021 20:04

I already run a handmade craft business full time, but have started a side hustle as a business consultant in the same field. I'll let you know whether I earn any money from it 😂

queenofthenorthwest · 24/04/2021 20:05

I'm good at painting, charcoals but it's having the time. I can't do portraits!

I'm good at making bracelets.

I just need to get my arse in gear.

I need to get an easel and get my mind in gear.

pregnantncnc · 24/04/2021 20:06

Should say that my original side hustle/now my business was photography - I moved into weddings. Started off charging very little while I was doing my A Levels (can't believe anyone ever paid me!), carried on through university, where I did one year of a full time normal job before realising I could make more from my "side job" and enjoyed it a hell of a lot more.

(also loved waitressing FYI)

londongram · 24/04/2021 20:08

@Whiskeywithwater

Please don’t say ‘side hustle’ ....
Why not?
kiwiPlumapple · 24/04/2021 20:08

I do cash in hand cleaning for one of my friends

ToryStelling · 24/04/2021 20:13

I write for my FT job. I also have a freelance copywriting business with my own website - I get a lot of leads through it and can pick and choose the projects I want to work on.

Some months I’m busy so don’t take on any extra freelance work. Other times (especially if we could use the money) I can easily make an extra £200-600 a month from it.

dancinfeet · 24/04/2021 20:22

Yes I do, I make craft items to sell. On average l make around £200 - £500 a month, but payments and outgoings go through my business account as I am self employed anyway, no tax dodging. I know that if I were to give up my main job and I could make a full time job of my craft business if I wanted to, based on the number of orders I have to turn down each week due to limited crafting time.

speakout · 24/04/2021 20:23

sweetclems

I make and sell craft items.

Cheermonger · 24/04/2021 20:27

In normal times I work about 20 days as a freelance artist liaison in the music industry at festivals and the like.

MixedUpFiles · 24/04/2021 20:27

No.

I have the skills that people often ask why I don’t sell things on Etsy. I point out that the most of the people selling on Etsy are not paying themselves anywhere close to a decent hourly wage and certainly no where close to what I can bill per hour in my main career. It makes far more sense to focus on my main job than to work any sort of side hustle.

speakout · 24/04/2021 20:28

dancinfeet

Good to hear of others making money in crafts. I have lost count of the number of times I have been told it is impossible to make a profit in crafting- but if you find a niche there is good money.
Like you I have to turn away business frequently because I usually have a backlog.
Profits from my venture put me into the higher income tax bracket.
