No matter how you style them?

Yes! I could never work out why I hate them so much but it is because they seem to age you and look frumpy. Doesn't stop me wearing them though Grin

Alsohuman · 19/04/2021 08:03

I think you missed the point I was making @speakout but never mind.

I guess not caring is liberating for some women. It wouldn’t be for me. Love of clothes and enjoying fashion is literally in my DNA - my mum and granny were incredibly stylish. If I couldn’t buy and wear clothes I love it would make me thoroughly miserable.

OnPlanetJanet · 19/04/2021 08:06

Also, the word frumpy can fuck right off. Men are never described as frumpy. No, just women when they're not sexy/stylish/young enough...jeez

This with bells on.

I personally love a cardigan because with hot flushes I need to take a layer of clothing off and then on again about 50 bastard times a day. I couldn't give a flying fuck about what anyone thinks about how I look.

I find the whole fashion industry vacuous, exploitative.

Here’s some pictures similar to cardigan outfits I’d wear - with no pretty model to skew things! Are these frumpy?

I'm not a fan, personally. Especially the last two.
Hardbackwriter · 19/04/2021 08:27

I think cardigans are a bit frumpy - but so is all knitwear, really, and all 'practical' clothing. You can say that all those models/celebrities would look even better without the cardigan - but that would also be true if they were wearing a jumper or a coat. Practical clothing can look cool, fun, and stylish but it's unlikely to look 'sexy', which is why constantly sexy is not a realistic look, and tends to make you look a bit silly if you try, as blue limbs and shivering aren't sexy either.

ultrababy · 19/04/2021 08:28

Not frumpy. Love this look. Does not look the same on me unfortunately.

This is true but my DM bought DH a cardi last Christmas which instantly became referred to (by me) as his "grandpa cardi." He does like it though Grin He describes himself as an old twat anyway so he doesn't care.

I like a short tie front cardi or long swishy one but definitely prefer a poncho or even a cape. But I'm weird apparently

Bluesheep8 · 19/04/2021 08:40

Long/oversize ones aren't frumpy.

IbrahimaRedTwo · 19/04/2021 08:50

Just on you, OP.

minniemomo · 19/04/2021 08:54

Who cares? They are comfortable, versatile and easier to put on when you get stiff shoulders

ShurImGrand123 · 19/04/2021 08:57

Do cardigan’s look frumpy?

Who cares?
I’ve never, even as a teen, given a stuff about what other people might think about my (clothes) choices. I have always worn whatever I liked no matter how outrageous or dull. Zero fucks given.

What a vacuous comment.

The fashion industry is a massive employer in the U.K. And design is one of the UK’s biggest exports. How can you find something vacuous when you don’t know anything about it? Is it just snobbery? British design graduates are the best in the world.

It’s possible to do an MA or a Phd in it. But because it’s not science or maths it is vacuous? Even though in schools it’s actually a STEM subject. And this carries onto degree level and beyond.
Materials science
Complex maths

I could go on.,, but of course it’s vacuous so l don’t need to...

@MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously

Beautiful, slim women can get away with things that ordinary looking women can't. It doesn't mean that the cardigan isn't intrinsically frumpy though. I say this even as I am tempted to buy a knee length stone coloured fluffy one I saw in a shop window during lockdown. I'm only deterred by my teenage daughter going 'urghh'.
This is one reason I’m glad I haven’t got kids! Don’t take any notice of what your daughter says, you’re dressing for you not her.
CounsellorTroi · 19/04/2021 09:06

@Yogatomorrow

Two minds about this: i love how practical they are (the essence of frumpiness), but think that the right cardy can look great (just like any other item of clothing). Then i think of a man in cardy...doesn't work ever.
Jon Richardson wears cardies.
CuriousaboutSamphire · 19/04/2021 09:13

Frumpy?

Ill tempered, dowdy?

Not comfortable, warm, unfettered by the social, patriarchal expectations of high heels and make up? Or the equally toxic demand for super studs?

Pshaw!

Liverbird77 · 19/04/2021 09:23

They suit a certain type...very slim, small boobed and usually with that blonder hair that can be shoved into a messy bun and still look fabulous.

CounsellorTroi · 19/04/2021 09:25

Cardigans are like any other item of clothing - how they look depends on who’s wearing them and how. The same item looks completely different on different people. Granny chic looked beautiful and ironic on young women, on anyone over a certain age it looked like giving up.

Giving up what exactly? Looking attractive to men and shaggable, as is our duty in a patriarchal society?

DrSbaitso · 19/04/2021 09:30

Humans have always had an interest in dressing and adorning themselves. Clothes, headdresses, face paint and jewellery exist from ancient cultures.

It's fine not to have an interest in it, or not to wear stuff you hate just because it's "in", but it's a bit simplistic to say it's totally worthless as a concept.

ferretface · 19/04/2021 09:34

How about if you style them with a blazer over the top? Then I think they look a bit androgynous, like a waistcoat 😃 here's my attempt

Sorry, I'm too distracted by your lovely cat!
ferretface · 19/04/2021 09:38

@DrSbaitso Grin I'm biased but he is a great cat!

Pyewackect · 19/04/2021 09:38

I have a collection of M&S cardies. 🤫
