No matter how you style them?

@Sandgrown1970

It’s not the models/celebrities that are frumpy.

It’s the cardigans

They’d all look less frumpy sans cardigan. They all look more frumpy than they would without with the cardigans on.

It’s really pointless posting pictures of “hot” women wearing frumpy cardigans. A) most women in the street aren’t 20 year old fashion models/Marilyn Monroe/Jennifer Anniston B) it’s only proving a point that the cardigan is a pretty blah/boring/unflattering item of clothing even on the most stunning of women.

Are THEY frumpy in themselves? No.

Are the CARDIGANS? Yes.

So, they don't ALWAYS look frumpy then?
JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 18/04/2021 22:42

I agree but how else can I cool myself down without seeming to be stripping off?

malificent7 · 18/04/2021 22:46

Cardigans are the best!

1Morewineplease · 18/04/2021 22:50

Don't give a toss.
Wear what you want.
Cardis are great for when you go out, in the morning when it's a bit chilly and you can take them off when the day gets warmer which you can't do if you're wearing a jumper.

You can have a classy shirt under a cardi but jumpers can look too casual, like you're about to walk the dog.

err of course you can take a jumper off if it gets too warm.

So what I have learned from this thread is that in order to offset the frumpiness of my cardigan I must wear a big fuck off hat.

Mypathtriedtokillme · 19/04/2021 01:55

Frumpy or not, who actually cares?
Surely the practicality of being warm is more important that sexy.
I’ve always found ladies with lots of skin on show in a mid winter evening out look bloody cold rather than sexy so a “frumpy” cardigan would be a smart change.

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 19/04/2021 02:20

Surely it depends on a lot of things. The outfit, your body shape, how well it fits etc. A cardigan can look great!

Gosh, yes, 100%
Absolutely nothing stylish about them, especially in beige or brown, yuk!

Absolutely just that @IncorrigibleTitmouse It's how you wear them 🙂
Hm2020 · 19/04/2021 04:14

I think they pretty much look the opposite classy, classic and understated

1forAll74 · 19/04/2021 04:50

I love cardigans, I have many of them. I don't like the thin old fashioned ones though, I like the fluffy ones in the colder weather, and have some unusual ones with designs on them. I have several longer type cosy cardigans with hoods on,which I wear between the seasons,as in getting into spring, after winter has passed.

Ginuwine · 19/04/2021 05:12

@CirqueDeMorgue

If you're a bit chunky, most thinks will look 'frumpy.'

I'm afraid this hits the nail on the head.

Ginuwine · 19/04/2021 05:17

@DrSbaitso

Nothing looks frumpy on a size 8 catalogue model. That's why they use them. Even frumpy stuff just takes on that ironic super demure prissy look; the entire point is that it should look frumpy but doesn't because the model would look gorgeous in a bin bag.

I definitely think some people wear some cardigans well; they come in all styles. But I don't think a young stunner pulling the look off will necessarily translate to the likes of me.

I hear this argument a lot ("young models are the factor not what is being worn").

It doesn't have to be a young model for it to look stylish.

It does help to be in good general shape if that's medically allowable for an individual - but I know the minute I discuss such a thing on here I'm due for a flaming so I'm out

I ❤️ cardigans
They work well with cottagecore

HoppingPavlova · 19/04/2021 06:46

My DD wears surf style cardies and they don’t look frumpy. One of my DS also wears guy surf style cardies and he doesn’t look like an old man.

MrsS92 · 19/04/2021 06:52

I’ve just bought this cardigan (it was £6.50 in a charity shop Grin)
It’s really frumpy but I bloody love it.

Yogatomorrow · 19/04/2021 07:02

Two minds about this: i love how practical they are (the essence of frumpiness), but think that the right cardy can look great (just like any other item of clothing). Then i think of a man in cardy...doesn't work ever.

SmallPrawnEnergy · 19/04/2021 07:04

No, again it’s all about personal styling. There are loads of very attractive and unfrumpy plus size women who look more fashionable and stylish than some of these examples here, size is irrelevant but unsurprisingly these views are shared here.

RampantIvy · 19/04/2021 07:22

I hate it when some posters think they are the fashion police and state that a wardrobe staple is frumpy. I hate that word. It is always used in a sneering, superior tone on here. Some cardigans are attractive and some aren't, just like some trousers/skirts/shirts etc are nice and some not.

As a glasses wearer I prefer the practicality of cardigans over jumpers, although I do wear a lot of jumpers.

Cardigans are brilliant on holiday when wearing a summer dress and coming in from outside into arctic air conditioning, or visiting a church.

midgedude · 19/04/2021 07:28

I think anyone who dismisses clothing as frumpy is making a judgement statement about women and how they are expected to behave , as eye candy

Oh, everyone is the ultimate style authority with the final say when it comes to sartorial matters. Everyone is the last word in good taste. You just have to accept that if you want to have a style chat on here. I shared a pic recently of a woman in a nice everyday outfit, who had several thousand likes for it (not me, I wish) and of course several individuals immediately declared them all completely objectively wrong based on their own personal dislike of it.

It's inevitably subjective but that's one reason why fashion is fun. It would also be fun to see how we're all dressed in reality while we carefully deconstruct all these fashion shoots!

I think that’s complete rubbish. Style or the lack of it is nothing to do with eye candy or any other kind of sexualisation.

Cardigans are like any other item of clothing - how they look depends on who’s wearing them and how. The same item looks completely different on different people. Granny chic looked beautiful and ironic on young women, on anyone over a certain age it looked like giving up.

speakout · 19/04/2021 07:49

anyone over a certain age it looked like giving up.

Or reaching that "certain age" and not actually giving a shit.

Truly liberating!!

Sparklingbrook · 19/04/2021 07:57

OP posted twice then disappeared I see. Claiming not to have the time to look at the replies. Interesting.

Cardigans are here to stay, now we’re all dining and drinking outside I think they have become fairly essential.
