No matter how you style them?

Cardigans are my favourite I have so many, way more versatile than jumpers

loulouljh · 18/04/2021 18:48

I LOVE a cardigan!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 18/04/2021 18:48

The OP isn't talking about only herself. She obviously feels able to attribute a negative descriptor to anybody else who wears a cardigan. Same as the repeat threads about cold-shoulder clothing.

People wear these things. They might not be to somebody's individual taste but the minute you (general) stop referring to yourself and start applying these frankly, mean, labels to everybody then it's liable to cause offense. You'd have to be a bit thick not to realise that.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/04/2021 18:49

Don't care. My office has 1950s metal window frames and a vicious draft. Uniqlo merino cardigans (over merino sweater over thermal base layer) are all that stands between me and hypothermia most winters.

NameChangedForThisFeb21 · 18/04/2021 18:51

@HeadNorth

In fairness to the OP, she did not specify the sex of the person wearing the cardigan, so why are posters leaping to assume it only refers to women? The be-cardiganed male is seldom presented as a sex God leading male figure, in my experience.
Good point. There was a youngish man who, not by me, was nicknamed “grandad” at work just because he always wore cardigans. He was always taken the piss out of because he chose to wear them over his work uniform. I completely disagreed with how he was treated and told others so but...he did look “dowdy and old-fashioned”.
ghostyslovesheets · 18/04/2021 18:52

I have a fluffy mustard one I wear over my silk brown PJ's - I think it's quiet sexy actually :D

I own many cardigans - long, short, fluffy, worky, summery - I bloody love them - and so much easier to shove in a bag than a jacket or blazer - but then I don't actually care what other people think of my clothes as long as I feel good in them

the80sweregreat · 18/04/2021 18:52

I like my cardigans and will not be parted from them!

BlackBucketOfCheese · 18/04/2021 18:55

Or tiny little bolero styles over a strappy dress.

They are quite honestly the most frumpy articles of clothing known to humanity.

LookMoreCloselier · 18/04/2021 18:56

I've enjoyed a good cardigan since forever. I wear them to work with pencil skirts or over dresses and have long knee length ones for casual. They are very useful. My dad also was a big fan of cardigans, even as a young man, and he was genuinely cool as fuck.

BlackBucketOfCheese · 18/04/2021 19:00

And I don’t think cardigans are frumpy in general.

Divebar2021 · 18/04/2021 19:03

I don’t have many but I do have a very fine knit one from Vivienne Westwood that sits very nicely on my waist.... luckily it emphasises my hourglass shape. ( which is what VW intended apparently). I know there’s a picture of Katie Holmes stopping traffic wearing hers with a matching knitted bra underneath. I love it when something viewed as undesirable is subverted into desirable... old fashioned girdles for example. At the end of the day it’s just an item of clothing and how you choose to style it makes all the difference.

DripdripdroplittleAprilshowers · 18/04/2021 19:05

I love my cardigans!

Big, chunky, long cable knit ones are my favourite, with cute tshirts and skinny jeans

mellicauli · 18/04/2021 19:10

Men have Dad clothes, Dad Bods and Dadcore so they don't get away without a bit of censure.

Vogue speaks wisely of cardigans "It’s the uniform of nursing homes. It’s meek Peggy Olson from Mad Men when she shuffled papers. It’s for class suck-ups .."

They did have a moment in the 90s. But people (& I include myself on this) just clung on for far far too long as they were so easy and practical..

FlorrieLindley · 18/04/2021 19:16

Years and years ago I saw the film "Don't Look Now" for the first time, and in it, Julie Christie has sex with her husband, played by Donald Sutherland. The lovemaking was intercut with them getting ready for dinner afterwards.
I was transfixed by her buttoning a lurex-threaded cardigan with nothing on underneath it.
I wanted a lurex-threaded cardigan, and the kind of bust that would allow me to wear it over nothing. So, I would say that, sometimes cardigans be something other than frumpy.

@Alsohuman

The over use of “frumpy” here mystifies me. Can anyone tell me what it actually means?
Fuck knows. Especially as there are loads of types of cardigans, not sure how they can all be seen as the same.
OnandOnforHoursandHours · 18/04/2021 19:18

@ErrolTheDragon

I think the reason people think of cardigans as frumpy is because, yes, they're typically more likely to be worn by women of middle age and up. And the reason for consigning ones lovely jumpers to a drawer and using a cardi is hot flushes. Grin
Aint that the truth, Errol!
EmeraldShamrock · 18/04/2021 19:22

@Cowbells @DrSbaitso Thanks for that.

Alsohuman · 18/04/2021 19:22

They may have been briefly fashionable in the 90s but they’re perennial because they’re one of the most practical garments ever. The perfect thing to shove on when you’re a bit chilly. I love a man’s cardigan with pockets. So cosy.

Foolintherain · 18/04/2021 19:25

I might swap my cardigans for a nice fleece.

Alsohuman · 18/04/2021 19:27

Nice fleece is an oxymoron!

2bazookas · 18/04/2021 19:30

who cares. Sometimes putting on some very ancient soft comfy frumpy clothes is very soothing and calming. DIY therapy.

FedNlanders · 18/04/2021 19:33

I hate them.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 18/04/2021 19:35

Ooo love a cardi! 👵🏼

Foolintherain · 18/04/2021 19:35

@FedNlanders

I hate them.
Don't wear them then.
ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/04/2021 19:37

This does not look frumpy
